The top Illinois House Republican is urging creation of a new coin to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s death in 2015.
House Republican Leader Tom Cross of Oswego has introduced a resolution urging the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee to study the issue and make a recommendation to the U.S. Treasury.
Cross’ resolution asks that the coin be minted in time for circulation during April and May of 2015. Those months mark the 150th anniversary of the journey of Lincoln’s funeral train from Washington, D.C., to Springfield.
Well, I guess that is more important than a recently introduced Speaker Madigan resolution…

The U.S. House approved a compromise Tuesday that would name the span the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge.
Missouri lawmakers had sought to name it after Musial, the late Cardinals baseball great. Their Illinois counterparts had wanted to name it after military veterans.
The resolution now heads to the U.S. Senate.

Illinois legislators recently passed a bill that will affect food service manager training and examinations.
If you are a food service sanitation manager or a trainer in Illinois, here is how this will affect you:
- The number of training hours required by the Department of Public Health will be reduced from 15 to 8
- Illinois will cease using its own state food safety exam and will recognize exams accredited under standards established by the Conference for Food Protection

Former 56th District state Rep. Paul Froehlich and his wife Marilyn — herself a former Schaumburg Township District Library trustee — have sold their Schaumburg home and retired to Panama.
The couple have temporarily moved into a condominium while awaiting completion of their new home in a small development catering to American and Canadian expatriates, according to friend and former Schaumburg trustee Pat Riley.

A new Lincoln one dollar coin was minted and released on November 18, 2010.
And we have already had the following Lincoln pennies:
Lincoln Wheat (1909–1958)
Lincoln Memorial (1959–2008)
Lincoln Bicentennial 4 reverse designs (2009)
Lincoln Union Shield[13] (2010–Present)
Not sure we need another Lincoln coin so soon.

But I would rather have Tom Cross working on penny designs than have him working on pensions. That SB 512 he introduced a few years ago with the Commercial Club of Chicago was a doosey. Employees in SURS would have seen their paycheck contributions go from 8 to 17%.

Who would have thought such a wise bipartisan compromise could emerge from the U.S. House? I’m stunned; there’s hope for The Republic yet.
Do you think it can muster 60 votes for cloture in the Senate? Don’t anyone tell Ted Cruz that the Cards beat the Rangers in the Series a couple of years ago.

Many pols have switched parties, but Paul Froehlich is the only one to have been elected to the IL House from both parties. What greater vote of confidence is there? Paul’s constituents elected & reelected him because of what Paul did for them and our State, not because he was a D or R! Cross was gunning for him when he switched to a D, but Paul’s voters stood by him. Ronald Reagan, Fred Crespo, Kathleen Willis, Julie Morrison, Mark Curran & many other pols switched parties, but few have taken the grief Paul has for doing so. CONGRATS TO PAUL & MARILYN…most of us would like to do what they’re doing!

A few brush the northern coast and islands of South America along 11 degrees latitude north of the Equator. But Panama is ‘tucked away’ at 9 degrees latitude below the reach of hurricanes. That will work out well - not. We’ve already got IDPH cutting back the Local Health Protection Grant money that local health departments use to fund their food safety education and food safety inspection programs, so now the solution to having less money at the local level is ‘Let’s change the laws to ensure the people handling all the potentially hazardous food be less educated’.
Yeah, that will work.
Just had (correction, have) a case in Lombard (DuPage County) where there are as many as 17 cases of E. coli (See http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2013/06/17-suspected-e-coli-cases-in-illinois-mexican-restaurant-outbreak/#.UcuKgthq_lw), but ‘no problem’.
IMO, every place handling potentially hazardous foods should be required to post in a public location at their facility a full copy of the last 3 consecutive food safety inspections, including all notes (including any and all violation notes).

I say congratulations to Paul and Marilyn. I have live in Schaumburg Township for over 15 years and I have heard nothing but praise for the Froehlich’s work within the community. I can tell you that the community admires them and the election results show it. Are elected officials suppose to represent their constituents or represent the party leaders?
Paul and Marilyn Froehlich put the people of our community first.
