Cook Co. Dems endorse @GovernorQuinn as @BillDaleyIL no-shows. @ILGOP rejoicing. Will @KwameRaoul play?

On Thursday, an aide to Daley said the campaign anticipates Quinn will win the backing of the 50 ward and 30 township committeemen who are scheduled to gather at a Loop hotel to consider statewide endorsements. As such, Daley doesn’t plan to show up to the slate-making session to ask for their support or try to persuade them not to endorse Quinn.
“In the last three slate-making sessions, the Cook County Democratic Party has backed Rod Blagojevich and Pat Quinn,” Daley spokesman Pete Giangreco said. “And when you look at the relationship that Joe Berrios and Frank Zuccarelli have with the governor, we don’t see any reason why that would change.”
Berrios, the county assessor who doubles as county Democratic chairman, has been criticized for hiring relatives. Zuccarelli, the Democratic committeeman and supervisor in Thornton Township, runs a potent vote-gathering operation. This week, Zuccarelli gave up his recent appointment by Quinn to the CTA board amid pointed criticisms from Daley about political patronage and double-dipping.
In forgoing slate-making, Daley, the son and brother of former Chicago mayors, is once again seeking to separate himself from his family history. His father, political boss Richard J. Daley, tightly controlled the endorsement process while serving as mayor, personally dictating the Democratic tickets at the state and local level.
At the same time, the slate-making session will mark the second consecutive appearance by Quinn before top county and city Democrats. In his earlier years as a political outsider, Quinn abhorred the slate-making process as an insiders’ game.
Dan Hynes tried to use Quinn’s slating against him in the 2010 cycle and it didn’t work.

Quinn predictably showed up to the session and gave the crowd of fellow Democrats his “land of Lincoln” stump speech, touching on his Illinois Jobs Now program and emphasizing the importance of “working every day for everyday people.”
“I need your support,” he told the group. “It’s going to be a tough campaign.

Will Bill Daley now denounce Pat Quinn as a Cook County insider? It would make a fantastic* political one-two punch when combined with Daley’s attacks on patronage workers.

Meh, Daley would happily have taken the endorsement if he could have gotten it.
Which begs the question: What exactly is his base in a Dem. statewide primary against an incumbent? Where does he start to build from? The Mighty 11th ain’t so much anymore.
Will he have the money to run a media-centric campaign like Rauner? Quinn will be able to match him dollar-for-dollar.
His best hope might be for Raoul to get in and tamp down Quinn’s support among black voters.
In a one-on-one race, how does Daley get to 50% plus 1?

The irony is so thick you can’t cut it with a knife! Quinn used to rail against the Cook Co endorsement process when he was on the outside, while the late Mayor Daley managed the process in the 50’s and 60’s and 70’s. This shows that today is a new day and this Daley is a new Daley. Daley’s reaching outside, while Quinn reaches inside. Interesting indeed.

NW, Daley can’t run as an outsider in any, way shape or form. It’s not remotely credible to anyone.
Not too many outsiders in the Situation Room when Osama got clippped, or hanging with Jamie Dimon at George Lucas’ wedding reception.

Wonder how many of those ward and township committeemen are on the payroll or have someone close to them on the payroll. “I’m going to vote against the guy who got me and my cousin our jobs job.” It reminds me of another recent CapFax post: https://capitolfax.com/2013/03/25/23-chairmen-are-on-the-payroll/

The optics on this make my head spin.
Unfortunately for Quinn in the end many of those endorsing him may well not do anything for him. They are protecting the jobs of themselves in some cases and their people in others. Although Quinn says he has nothing to do with hiring his office tightly controls hiring and contracts.
He is such a phony reformer.

You know folks bashed Quinn for not knowing how to play the game at one time. Now that he’s on the inside he’s being bashed for acting like his predecessors. He is not engaging in pay to play like Blago did folks. Patronage is part of politics and that will never change. Is Quinn a reformer? That’s up to you to decide.

No kidding, Loop Lady. Either Quinn has no clue how to use the levers of his office, or he has such tight control over patronage that central committees throughout the state live in perpetual fear of his wrath.
It just depends on which broken record Cassi wants to play on a given day.

“Ineffective governor” and “patronage” are not mutually exclusive when describing Quinn.
Quinn appears to be doing a bang-up job of getting his friends and allies state jobs. Witness the number of county chairmen working for the state who happened to sign the letter endorsing him, or his brazen appointment of Zuccarelli.
Quinn also appears to be a woefully ineffective, and sometimes clueless, governor.
Quinn knows how to pull the levers of his office when it comes to patronage.
Sadly, he does not know how to pull the levers of his office when it comes to meaningful leadership.
He clearly learned how to “play the game” after watching and learning from the Walker administration all the way through the Blago years. He just focused on the wrong lessons.

3 dems slated for the 1st dsitrict Appellate Court yesterday:
Former Chicago Alderman Freddrenna Margaret Lyle appointed by Justice Freeman in 2011 to Circuit Court, John Simon, sitting Appellate Court Justice appointed by Justice Burke in 2012 and David Ellis, Speaker Madigan’s attorney. All set to receive ten year terms if they win.

1. if Daley could have gotten or atleast blocked the endorsement, he would have.
2. Last time I checked, Berrios was dubbed a “Madigan Guy.”
3. No one whose last name isnt Daley wants to see Daley in the Mansion. Nature abhors a vacuum, and when Daley left the Mayor’s office, the power vacuum was filled by others. they arent gonna invite the family back in. Not if they have any sense.
4. unless I am wrong, the new bylaws prohibit local organizations from working against slated candidates.
5. Not a good day for Daley, but even worse for Kwame. He needed the support of atleast some of the Lakefront and most of the African American committeemen to be viable.

Quinn got the endorsement, ok, sounds like a hood thing.
Daley didn’t get the endorsement, ok, I guess bad news.
It will only matter come Primary time, absentee ballot time, and GOTV time. Then this will have my attention, but today, not moving any needles yet for me.

Freddrenna Lyle?
She is either blindly partisan or blindly focused on race. Neither of which suit the notion of equal treatment in her courtroom. Some may recall her bizarre comments concerning Mark Kirk:
Kirk: “These are lawyers and other people that will be deployed in key, vulnerable precincts, for example, South and West sides of Chicago, Rockford, Metro East, where the other side might be tempted to jigger the numbers somewhat”.
Lyle: “Lyle, a Democratic Committee member and an Alexi Giannoulias supporter, and others were offended by Kirk’s use of the verb “jigger” when talking about regions heavily populated by black voters.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary says “jigger” does mean “to alter, re-arrange, or manipulate” and has been used by many politicians to describe election fraud.
“He said what he meant. He may not have meant to say it in that manner, but he said it, and it’s offensive,” Lyle said.”
