Rauner chooses Latina, first term Wheaton city council member as running mate

Posted in:

* From a press release…

Bruce Rauner announced Evelyn Sanguinetti as his Lieutenant Governor selection today and they began a two-day tour of the state that will take them to Chicago, Rockford, Quad Cities, Marion, Quincy and Peoria.

“Evelyn is the perfect partner to shake up Springfield,” Bruce Rauner said. “She’s achieved the American Dream and will fight so more in Illinois can reach it too. She grew up in poverty, relying on public assistance, and worked hard to become an Illinois Assistant Attorney General, a City Councilmember, and a teacher at the very law school that gave her the opportunity to work for this state.”

“She has the talent and guts to take on the lobbyists, special interests, and career politicians that are destroying this state and eliminating opportunities for the next generation,” Rauner said.

“I’m proof that with hard work, a good education and an opportunity anyone from anywhere can make it,” Evelyn Sanguinetti said. “Unfortunately, too many in Illinois who have backgrounds that look a whole lot like mine aren’t being given access to a quality education or that opportunity to succeed. I understand firsthand how the policies pushed by the career politicians are failing us and that’s why I’m excited to run with Bruce Rauner to transform Illinois.”

“Vamos a sacudir a Springfield, y traer de vuelta a Illinois,” Sanguinetti concluded.

About Evelyn

Evelyn is the living embodiment of the American dream. A first-generation citizen, Evelyn’s been beating the odds her entire life.

Evelyn’s father legally immigrated to the United States from Ecuador, and her mother entered the country as a Cuban refugee. Her parents were still teenagers when she was born in Miami, Florida, and Evelyn grew up with Spanish as her first language.

Her parents often struggled to make ends meet, and her family moved frequently, whenever they could no longer afford rent. Evelyn found her way through her love of playing the piano and was able to attend a top public school for fine arts in Miami.

Through this opportunity, she developed a love of learning and decided to attend college and pursue a better life. Evelyn received her bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Florida International University. She soon moved to Chicago to attend The John Marshall Law School, fell in love with Illinois and plans to never leave.

Following law school, Evelyn worked as an Assistant Attorney General in the Illinois Attorney General’s Office under Jim Ryan before transitioning to private practice. She is also an Adjunct Professor of Law at The John Marshall Law School.

In another turning point in her life, Evelyn suffered a slip and fall accident a few years ago and when being checked by doctors discovered that she has multiple sclerosis. Evelyn hasn’t let it slow her down. After being given the green light from her doctor, she ran for City Council of Wheaton, and won in 2011.

Evelyn currently lives in Wheaton with her husband, Raymond, and their three children. She has been involved in Franklin Middle School, Lowell Elementary School and Jefferson Preschool PTA’s. Evelyn is also a member of the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce and the DuPage County Bar Association. Evelyn and her family are active in Cub Scouts, the Community School of the Arts, Wheaton Briarcliffe Youth Baseball, and sports within the Wheaton Park District.

Born into a family of immigrants with little means, Evelyn has combined talent, hard work and self-determination to achieve great things for herself and give back to the local community. She is committed to making sure all the people of Illinois have a similar opportunity to succeed.

* In an e-mail to supporters, Rauner said he had “found the perfect partner to join me in shaking up Springfield.”

He also posted a Spanish language version of the intro video here.

  1. First term city council member in a medium sized town? Such qualifications to step in as governor.

  2. Interesting choice. How’s Rauner’s health? Is she ready to be Governor?

  3. Great, now we have two people on a ticket unprepared to govern.

  4. Wow. What is not to like? Oh wait, this is Illinois where we prefer our candidates pre-packaged and beholdin’ to the existing power structures.

  5. So Evelyn achieved the American dream by landing a job post law school with the state where she could serve the public and provide a comfortable life for herself. But Rauner is running to make the pay and benefits for jobs like the one Evelyn had much worse. Interesting.

  8. Wow. An unbelievably bad choice. He certainly outdid himself here, and I had unreasonably low expectations for this pick. I literally had to Google her name as I had NEVER heard of her before. I guess actual governmental experience means next to nothing anymore for the GOP.

  16. Withholding judgement for now, but this whole running mate choice does add an interesting dimension to the race(s). It’s often said that the choice of a VP is the first big decision we get to see a presidential candidate make. I’m not sure it makes a whole lot of difference in the end, but for those of us who like to (over?) analyze the candidates and their potential leadership style, these choices are valuable.

Comment by Snucka Tuesday, Oct 8, 13 @ 9:21 am

  17. I stopped paying attention when she said Bruce has no ties to special interests. If you want to be taken seriously you have to be serious.

Rauner is a ranking member of the most powerful special interest, i.e., the 1%’ers.

I do love though how she wants to pull-up the drawbridge after she relied on government programs for years when her family needed help.

    Good luck with that.

  19. Oh geez …Daily Herald, today…

===”I’m proof that with hard work, a good education and an opportunity anyone from anywhere can make it,” Sanguinetti said in a statement. “Unfortunately, too many in Illinois who have backgrounds that look a whole lot like mine aren’t being given access to a quality education or that opportunity to succeed.”===

It just blows me away someone so ignorant about who Payton Prep Clouter Bruce Rauner is, is now running with PPC, and touting education in her first quote …

“Unfortunately, too many in Illinois who have backgrounds that look a whole lot like mine aren’t being given access to a quality education or that opportunity to succeed.”

Um, your running mate, got his DENIED Daughter into the best PUBLIC School in the state, denying, and I am quoting you,…

===”…too many in Illinois who have backgrounds that look a whole lot like mine aren’t being given access…”===

Your running mate set himself up in a Chicago condo, got his New Trier Daughter to “live” there, Clouted his DENIED daughter into Payton Prep, and then after she graduated, he “changes voting registration”… you know, “to keep everyting in line”.

Evelyn, Payton Prep Clouter Bruce Rauner is a metaphor for all the people you had to climb over, and you choose to run WITH the Payton Prep Clouter?

I am sure, if one were to look, there were Latinas on the “wait list” to Payton Prep.

Accepted, and on the “wait list”…students you want to have every opportunity …but Bruce Rauner decided any of those kids wasn’t good enough …Rauner’s DENIED Daughter should jump over kids you advocate for.

    Know that.

You sold yourself out in your first quote, about education, to run with the Payton Prep Clouter, denying a seat to a child, maybe with a background you could understand and relate to because I guess what you say, and what you stand for means very little, when the Payton Prep Clouter calls…

I hope you don’t run into a Latina who was denied entrance into Payton Prep, while on that “wait list” and you decide to tout “education” and “opportunity”, because now, all that “education” and opportunity …that is just lip service now.

Congrats! You have now turned your back on …

===”…too many in Illinois who have backgrounds that look a whole lot like mine aren’t being given access…”===

    Embarrassingly Pathetic.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Oct 8, 13 @ 9:24 am

  20. I agree that Sheila Simon was a bad pick (heck I bet Pat Quinn agrees), but at least she was running with a guy with several decades of insider state government experience (don’t tell Pat he’s an insider, he might faint). Here, Ms. Sanguinetti is not only inexperienced herself, she’s running with a guy with even less experience. Given Rauner’s outsider mantra, I doubt he would even look for an experienced state pol to run with him to assuage concerns about his lack of experience. Even if he had, who would’ve run with him anyway?

Comment by Ron Burgundy Tuesday, Oct 8, 13 @ 9:25 am

  21. Full of contradictions-She is the “living embodiment of the American dream”, which came true with the assistance of food stamps, public education, and public employment. Rauner wants to gut all of them.

Comment by Chi Tuesday, Oct 8, 13 @ 9:25 am

  22. I live in Wheaton and know Evelyn. The political “optics” of her selection are intriguing. I am surprised as anyone to hear about her selection. Does she have the “gravitas” to be Governor, I’m not sure, but campaigns have a way of finding out what people are made of. I expect she will be a good campaigner for Rauner, a bit timid and soft spoken at first, but I know she is not afraid to speak her mind. Give her time, she might surprise people.

BTW: I’m not a Rauner supporter, but definitely an Evelyn admirer.

Comment by anon sequitor Tuesday, Oct 8, 13 @ 9:27 am

  23. @Just O,

That is what I am looking for. thank you.

We should be careful of our “lenses”. sometimes we find something to bash in the other party while ignoring the same exact thing in our part or touting it as a plus.

No experience other party = Not ready to lead, no background, etc.

No experience our party = an outsider who is ready to change things and get things done

Comment by RonOglesby Tuesday, Oct 8, 13 @ 9:27 am

  24. RonOglesby: I thought Simon was a poor choice at the time, but at least she had served a whole four years in city council rather than just two like this, even-weaker candidate.

  27. MS. How West Wing of them. As someone with MS, I have to ask more about her type of MS and her current treatment and symptoms before I could evaluate her ability to run. You’d never know I have MS upon meeting me, but one of my major symptoms is fatigue, which can be exacerbated under stress. And I take weekly injections that can cause flu-like symptoms. We have very able legislators out there with MS, like Linda Holmes, but I know she’d tell you it isn’t always easy.

    Oh, she’s outside alright.

    If you are going to be the Lt. Governor, the qulification is one;

    Able to be governor. Period.

    Evelyn isn’t even the Mayor.

    Evelyn sits on the Board.

If “Gov. Rauner” has to hand the reigns of government to Evelyn, Evelyn can handle the 5th Largest state in America?

This isn’t Deputy Director for External Affairs for Wheaton, Illinois.

    The discussion is at its simplest;

Is Evelyn, is Maria, is Steve… are they ready to run the 5th Largest State in America?

  30. Maria Rodriguez, sounds Latina but she is not. Evelyn Sanguinetti, sounds Italian but she is not. Bruce Rauner, sounds Republican but he supports Democrats.

‘Must a name mean something?’ Alice asked doubtfully.

  34. Perspective.

    In April of 2011…

Evelyn Sanguinetti received 3,608 votes, finished second for the 2 At-Large seats being contested.

    Total Precincts - 61.

My Party has one LG Candidate who was Mayor of a town with 8 Precincts,…

…another who ran statewide, who is mocked because the fun question to ask is “Who did Lisa Beat that time?”,…

    …and now an At-Large Councilwomen, finishing 2nd, in 61 precincts…

These are the BEST #2s available to take over running the 5th Largest State in America?

He is trying to be painted as an elitest, WASP-ish, sexist, non egalitarian by his political foes. This choice of running mate seems to go against those arguments.

Wow, I can’t believe Oswego Willy is still talking about Payton. Big surprise.

    Good point.

Wouldn’t it be great if - in general, in politics - there were more acknowledgement of the fact that individual examples of achieving the American Dream very often involve help along the way from e.g. food stamps?

And greater still if politicians who bray about working toward the American Dream could defend those same supports, rather than overtly attack them (or more subtly and craftily undermine them)?

  38. Can we just agree that the LT is the least desirable statewide seat. In fact, most pols would rather run for the GA than be in ‘limbo’ for 4 years. Would support a referendum to drop the position altogether.

Comment by Darienite Tuesday, Oct 8, 13 @ 10:03 am

  39. - Jaded -,

    Perspective.

Pat Quinn was the state Treasurer at one point, served and “understood” government, and the case can be made, Pat Quinn, at the moment Illinois needed him to “step in and be Governor”, at that moment, Pat Quinn was ready and able.

How Pat Quinn has governed is up for debate, and frankly, we would probably be on the same side, but for the practical. Pat Quinn fulfilled the role, Pat Quinn was ready to be Governor, and at that moment, Illinois was in better hands as the transition from Rod to Pat toook place.

As for Sheila, I can’t make the case, nor have I … ever … that Sheila Simon is ready to be governor, and I know I never made the case for Jason Plummer being ready to be governor.

Why I am railing on Evelyn, and Maria, and Steve is that can those three, look in the mirror, and say, “Someone thinks I can be a Governor. Maybe the question I need to ask myself is, ‘Do I?’ …”

Do not tell me the LG spot doesn’t matter. It may not matter in the day-to-day arena, but LG Quinn found out, the Lt. Governor matters, and that LG better be ready.

In a state where “selling out” has multi definitions and scores of examples, we’re better off not talking that way. Not trying to pick a fight with you buddy, but you’re too quick to judgment on this and your comments are too harsh. Take a breath, give it more thought and see what a little time brings. No one is qualified until they’re qualified. That’s how the system works. She’s got a wonderful story. Experience has taught her more than most. Yep, I will bring up the delicious irony that Evelyn Sanguinetti sold her soul, and everything she believes in, in education, to run with someone whose calling of Arne duncan got his DENIED New Trier Daughter into a school with a “wait list” that very well may had Latinas who did qualify.

Evelyn made it her first quote out of the box.

I didn’t force Evelyn to turn her back on “her story”, I was not there when Evelyn made that quote the first thing people read.

If Eveyn wants to be the Lt. Governor, and run with a story that is so counter to who Evelyn is running with, then guess what, you get “called” on it.

    Every time.

You can’t … can NOT … come out and discuss “opportuity” and “education” and not understand that the educational ethics of the Payton Prep Clouter Bruce Rauner flies directly in the face of her own story, her own SUCCESS story, and by running whith Rauner, Evelyn is literally ignoring that the “Bruce Rauners” of her own past made it difficult for her.

I’m not a Rauner rah-rah guy (you know that), but I do think his work in Charter Schools and other areas have given a lot of kids shots at a chance for a good education. Obviously, that doesn’t cover for the clout business. Any injustice is…injustice. Time will tell if he’s learned and some penitence requires him to atone in a manner that gives hundreds or thousands of kids a better chance. We’ll see. I’m watching and I’m not convinced of anyone’s sincerity yet. But this lady is worth a look without all the early missiles coming at her. She rise or fall on her own experience, education and ability. A rush to judgment is almost never good. You’re way too thoughtful to go this way. Pound on him all you want.     Even recently, I explained why I do what I do;

Those running for office seem to be surrounded by people telling them how great they are, how sart they are, what a great decision that was …

I try to give the perspective that either they don’t want to see, or refuse to see, in hopes that it might help.

Second, if I cam out supporting someone, that would be a “death nail” for that person.

If I am consistant, if I can give the other side how something can and is seen, and if I can do it without coddling and saying “2 positives and 1 negative” and just cut to the chase, then I try.

This is a bad choice for Rauner, this is a terrible choice made by Evelyn.

Rauner needs to hire you to defend him on the Payton thing since you seem to be bent out of shape about anybody bringing it up.

And, by the way, I can relate to the concept. Using his influence to do something like that kind of makes his argument about being a “different kind of guy” laughable. The issue isn’t the school per se, it’s that he is talking about of both sides of his mouth.

    Further,

So, you deny a child, and your penance is to bulid a school and all is forgiven?

If Payton Prep Clouter Bruce Rauner wants to clear his Conscience, fine, that still doesn’t wipe clean the ethical, nor does it make it “right”.

Money can’t buy integrity. It tries, but it always falls short.

  69. Evelyn Sanguinetti has no Hispanic voting base and there is no evidence she could win over any significant part of that voting block on a state wide basis. Wheaton’s Hispanic population is about 5.2% of the total. Based on the most current census data 15.8% of Illinois’ residents identified themselves as Hispanic. I honestly can’t imagine that there was not another Hispanic Republican candidate Mr. Rauner could have selected who came from a geographic area of the state with more of a Hispanic voting block. How about Elgin for example, there is a sizable Hispanic vote there.

I don’t see much strategic thinking involved in this pick and I don’t see Quinn losing any real Hispanic support based on this selection.

These “payton” attacks come across as petty, reaching.

It seems like you are angry with Rauner for not picking a running mate “in the mold” of the caricature you are trying to create of him. How dare he pick someone who is going to be more difficult to attack politically!

New people with new perspectives is now a bad thing? Like some have pointed out lets wait and see how she takes on the media and campaigns the issues…then we can make decisions from there. 85. 1) I think this quote is accurate:

“Interesting personality politics happening in the GOP Primary. The Gov candidates are all white males, while the LTs are all…well, not white males.

I give the GOP kudos for seemingly realizing they have a White Boy problem, though its a pretty pander-ey to see the candidates all flock toward racial minorities in a transparent move to win voters that reject their policies.”

It’s clear that the LG candidates not being white males on the GOP side is on one hand a good recognition by the party that they need to do better. On the other hand, it also shows how incredibly shallow their “bench” is when it comes to credible non-white-male candidates. They are more concerned with checking demographic boxes than they are with somebody who can credibly be a part of an administration in Springfield and, in an emergency, step in and run the state. Winning over more minority or women voters is something the GOP needs to do. But it’s going to take a bottom-up approach over a period of years, not simply sticking a few diverse faces on a ticket and hoping people will vote based on identity politics.

    2) People are saying he asked both Karen McConaughey (former Kane County Chairman & current state senator), as well as Darlene Ruscitti (respected DuPage countywide official, current DuPage GOP Chairman, near-miss congressional candidate), and they both shot him down. So there are credible & qualified non-white-male LG candidates out there, it’s just that none of them saw the LtGov nomination as a smart political move. He basically wiffed his way down the batting line up and came up with a first-term city councilwoman of a medium sized city. She seems like a nice lady & soccer mom, and presumably is a competent attorney and city councilwoman. But a would-be-governor-in-waiting she is not. Give her 5 or 10 years to be mayor, state rep, or countywide official, then I could see it. But not right now.

    3) I don’t think Rauner’s LG choice is necessarily going to take a huge bite out of DuPage from Dillard. The vast majority of the establishment was with Dillard, and a tad for Rutherford. Nobody for Rauner and Brady. I don’t believe that she has any major grassroots following in DuPage either. So locally she will not change the race dynamics very much, if at all. The only thing she might do is help demographically across the rest of the state in a very broad way.

    4) I admit that I am a Dillard guy, so I am biased. But I would say the one exception to the GOP primary LG candidates is Jil Tracy. Yes, she checks two demographic boxes (female and downstate), but she’s at least a state rep and reasonably respected in her district and in Springfield. I don’t think anybody’s said that she couldn’t stand at a podium, exude credibility, and take the mantle of the governorship if disaster struck. All in all, I think it demonstrates that Dillard is at least serious about his LG choice, whereas the other three pretty much just tried to check as many boxes as possible with little regard to substance or governing ability.

    5) I agree that Shelia Simon was a pretty weak pick. But at least she had name ID and was the heir apparent in a liberal downstate political dynasty. Within 5 seconds you could get an average voter to put her in context by saying “You know…the late Senator Paul Simon’s kid…”, and thus reinforce Quinn’s liberal activist credentials for the base. I don’t see that happening with Kim, Rodriguez, or Sanguinetti.

What we really should be criticizing is the new law which allows the top candidate to choose a light weight to stand by waiting to take over the governorship. We are letting one person nominate the candidate instead of making the candidate run and come in first in a state-wide election.

Now that we have eight candidates, Bill, Bruce, Dan, Kirk, Evelyn, Jill, Maria and Steve, they should sign the following pledge:

    1. Our love for Illinois and its people compels us to present our party and the state with significant alternatives to Springfield’s record of abject failure.

    2. We will campaign against the failed policies of Springfield, not against each other.

    3. We hereby pledge that we, the eight of us, are a team that will work together through election day 2014 to deliver our beloved state from the grip of its corrupt ruling clique.

    4. We will campaign in every county, in every ward and township of Cook County, since opportunity beckons all to a better Illinois.

There’s plenty to criticize Rauner over, check my past posts. He has made numerous contributions to charter schools and education in general. This is what makes the whole clouting thing so ridiculously crazy for him. A dopey moment that is allowing chickens to come home to roost. He has the $ to talk about the good he’s done and I’m not sure there’s much $ collectively to talk about the hypocrisy of the clouting business. His stump speech on Charters, vouchers, school choice and education reform and pension reform has a growing audience. I enjoy the give and take, but keep it real brother.

As for tools, I try to use mine.

Your Babbitt-like boosterism notwithstanding, I believe there are legitimate questions as to whether diverting public funds to privately managed charter schools and busting teachers unions are true indicators of a champion of education for all.
