* Rick Pearson’s story on the unveiling of Bruce Rauner’s new running mate is an absolute must-read. On Rauner’s refusal to say where he stood on the proposed ADM tax break…
While comfortable ripping the governor for a “lack of leadership,” Rauner acknowledged he didn’t know enough about the Decatur-based agribusiness giant’s tax break request to say whether he would approve it. […]
Rauner’s response marked the latest case in which he has declined to state his position on an issue. He repeatedly has refused to express his position on same-sex marriage. He’s even dodged saying whether the state should have a mandatory helmet law after his campaign helped facilitate media coverage as he rode his motorcycle to Republican Day at the Illinois State Fair.
Rauner has become the king of the dodge, so it’s only right that this be shared with voters.
* On Evelyn Sanguinetti, the new LG candidate…
Sanguinetti was an assistant attorney general handling workplace discrimination and wage issues under former Republican Attorney General Jim Ryan. While in the job, she said, “from a distance, though, I saw the corruption. I saw the insider dealings. I saw the special-interest back-scratching. It shocked me.”
But Sanguinetti did not say whether she reported any instances of corruption to her bosses or authorities.
Man, what a great follow-up question that was. My hat’s off to Pearson.
The only question I didn’t see asked was how Rauner’s choice was the “perfect” person to take over as governor should (God forbid) something happen to him. But, nobody has asked that question about any of the running mates so far, so whatever.
And, just to be clear, when I say we need more stories like this, I mean stories on all the candidates, not just Rauner.

“I’m sure a 4-foot-11 Latina with an Italian last name and three small children is certainly not what the career politicians out in Springfield expected,” she told reporters in downtown Chicago. “My journey has not been the usual journey. It certainly hasn’t been typical, but I can tell you this: It’s been very American.”
The daughter of immigrants from Cuba and Ecuador was born in Florida and studied music at Florida International University. She works at a private downtown Chicago firm and teaches at The John Marshall Law School, where she earned a degree in 1998.
“She has the tenacity, the guts to take on the special interest groups in Springfield,” Rauner said.

Judging by their running-mate picks, the four Illinois Republican candidates for governor recognize their party needs an image makeover.
While there are four white males competing in the Republican primary, each has chosen either a woman or a minority as his choice for lieutenant governor in the GOP quest to take control of the governor’s mansion. […]
Republicans nationally are aware they suffer from an image problem, namely that their proverbial tent is too small. In last year’s general election, Democrats won the majority of women and minority voters — particularly Hispanics and African Americans.
The trends were no different in Illinois, said Dick Simpson, professor of political science at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
“There is no fundamental difference,” Simpson said. “They’re seen as a white-only party. They’ve been losing the women’s vote in Illinois just like in the nation. They’ve particularly lost the Latino vote. The women’s vote has been going to the Democrats for some time.”

Say what? Please be specific about these shocking acts of corruption and what you did as a prosecutor to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Perhaps Rauner can propose an advisory referendum on the ADM issue.

Pearson’s story was a little stilted and severe. Every candidate unveiling is met with dodging of unrelated questions. ADM is an issue, but certainly not an enormously important one in the scheme of things. To build the story around Rauner’s refusal to answer was a little contrived and a shot that can be taken at virtually any candidate under the circumstances. For God’s sake, Obama never answers any questions he’s asked and hasn’t for years and he never got harpooned like this.

She just got on the ticket with a guy who bought a second residence, changed his voter registration so he doesn’t vote the same place as his wife and then used that second residence to clout his kid into a different school. That’s not an insider deal I’m sure.

Isn’t an Attorney a sworn officer of the Court?
Isn’t it the responsiblity of a Lawyer to report such?

Evelyn is not the most senior member of the Wheaton City Council!
But, don’t worry, when Evelyn stops getting a check from her governmental job, she will lob stones at the “shocking” corruption.
Normally this would be just “pandering”, or “sour grapes”, or even “rhetoric for an audience”.
Evelyn is/was an attorney. Evelyn fopund no need to report on corruption?
How will Evelny handle state government, while working closely with Bruce Rauner? What will Evelyn do when “Gov. Rauner” calls Mayor Emanuel to find out how to Clout another child into Payton Prep, maybe over a Latina who is qualified?
Maybe she missed the day they taught “Law” in Law School?

This is another example of political spin to make their person sound good. As Word said, if she saw corruption she should have done something about it. In fact, don’t attorneys - certainly attorney’s working for the AG - have an obligation to report illegal activity. Public employees now have to take training where they are told to report corruption.
Rauner continues to be a joke with his no position shtick.

The tongues are already wagging over her comments! Insiders I talked to yesterday who were non-committal are a bit more forth coming this morning. Seems Evelyn was not exactly the sharpest of legal minds and questions were raised as to her competence and just exactly how she got the position in the first place. Given her comments I believe that this will not end well for her or farmer Bruce.
BTW as an officer of the court she is absolutely required to report illegal acts or activity. If we take her at her word then why were these not reported? Perhaps we should not take her at her word and that would raise questions as well………

“How can we trust Evelyn as the Lt. Governor, when Evelyn said she saw corruption with her own eyes, and sat back and did nothing. Even as an attorney, an Officer of the Court, Evelyn felt no need to report the corruption she saw.

how is it going with his constitutional amendment? is he willing to talk about that?
debates could be important for both gov and lite gov candidates, if good questions are asked. their lack of understanding of state government issues should come out. you cant keep dodging. hemming and hawing can also provide fodder for damaging ads, assuming anyone has enough money to run some.

The lt. gov candidates are a classic case of trying to broaden appeal. Isn’t Quinn expected to do the same thing with his lt. gov. choice. if so, why is it so horrible for GOP to do the same.
Remember Ryan’s runningmate. Remember Sheila Simon. Nothing new here. So why prattle on as if there is.

I don’t hold with the quick summations that IL is the -most- corrupt state; the data on that is more than unclear, when you control for population size and number of public officials. Big states are going to have more prosecutions; bigger City Councils will have more arrests.
But there’s definitely a strong cultural norm here, which you learn early on and then transmit to the next generation, if you enter politics in IL: don’t be a rat! It’s learned on both the Dem and GOP side. Even the honest and ethical people who go into politics learn it fast - if thou shalt not steal, thou shalt still not blow the whistle on anyone who does. If you blow that whistle, then even the honest and ethical politicos in this state won’t hire you onto their staff. Don’t be a rat!!
It’s hard to imagine how to compare this norm across different state political cultures - surely it also exists elsewhere - but it seems pretty embedded in IL.

It would be a problem if she saw up close specific acts of corruption and did nothing; but surely in her role as Assistant AG she had opportunity to observe the impeachment hearings and Senate trial regarding Blago, see the various Auditor General reports on how that administration worked, and read the newspapers with a keener insight given her employment. That sort of general awareness, without specific first-hand knowledge, does not require reporting. Lots of legislative staffers could say the very same thing. Perhaps folks here are being a bit too tough…

If the only job of the lt gov is to be able to serve if something happens to the gov and she has ms, then she needs to be 100 percent transparent with her medical records. It’s particularly important that she do this given that Rauner’s message in picking her was that he was a transparent outsider who does not play and is not an inside player.
And yes the fact that every journalist has seen the west wing which features the sheen characters dodge on his ms, and transparency of senator kirk in disclosing his own issues makes it that much more important she is open about this.

What distance? What specifically did Evelyn see?
Either you are “inside” and “understand government” for working closely in Jim Ryan’s Attorney General’s Office, seeing “all this corruption” and said notihng as an Officer of the Court, which is damaging….or,
…you were nowhere close, and are lobbing grenades to SEEM like you were close, but were no closer than you or I, and just collecting a paycheck from a job you were “grateful” to have and that is about it.
Either way, pathetic way to try and introduce your credentials as someone looking to fix government, and not knowing HOW, or WHAT was so bad that Evelyn didn’t find the need to report it.

In near Cook Co. suburbs like Berwyn and Cicero, South Suburbs like Blue Island, cities like Elgin, West Chicago and Aurora and neighborhoods on the NW and SW side of Chicago. She’ll be able to campaign speaking in her first language learned to Latinos and especially women about her story and how the Republican Party may have more in common with their beliefs than the other party. It will be completely natural for her and she’ll deliver a message directly and without translation nuance. According to counts out there, she can speak directly to 15% of the voters in their native language. Don’t underestimate the power of this. She’s also well spoken and completely fluent in English for the remainder of places she’ll be sent to. She’s a popular person in her community, well liked, pretty, always well dressed and professional looking and very even-tempered. She offers more than any of the others in terms of added communication skills. She’s not just a lawyer (former prosecutor), but a law professor. I like her a lot more than her running mate. Her being there causes me to give him a look, something I wouldn’t have considered before. He made a better pick than any of the others. Steve Kim; nice guy. Long Grove Mayor; who? Jil Tracy; not a factor north of I80, seems capable. Dillard should have doubled down in his base. The downstate guys needed balance. Dillard needs a secure base. That has a crack in it at the moment.

But what are you talking about no one said it was a big deal. Pearson wrote an entire column discussing the obvious.
Not playing the victim, just pointing out standard operating procedure to those who occupy this bubble where 90 percent of the participants all think and say the same things.
Re the corruption issue, one can see things from a distance that look bad — like Bill Cellini’s entire career — and not have enough specific knowledge to justify filing a criminal complaint.

Last I checked, all those 15% Hispanics have no way of getting the polls with no Ground Game for Rauner/Sanguinetti, and further, are they going to ID these voters. or just vote whomever and HOPE they go Rauner/Sanguinetti?
Tracy has a Senate district base, no other ticket is in, she is well respected, as a prosecutor of Blago, and a member of the Pension Select Committee, and has been elected numerous times, and was also in the AG’s office…
So Evelyn is more qualified?

I think Evelyn was talking about watching the corruption in Springfield from a distance as a citizen non-elected official. The Tribune reporter skewed this to make himself seem like a cutting edge reporter. Would love to see a video of the press conference to see if this reporter is the one who is spinning.

Norseman, to put it succinctly “yes”. Maybe you weren’t alive or around when Luis Guitierrez first won a seat in Congress. What I wouldn’t call the Latinos is “shallow”. That’s you saying that. If they relate to her and their story, they’ll most certainly want a person in government who relates to them. That’s not shallow at all. Who in this field relates better? I’ll answer: no one.
Willie, Jil is accomplished. Dillard would and should win this district anyway. He would have been better off with another choice. His base has a crack in it now. You’re way above this simplistic notion of the “I saw corruption from a distance, I didn’t report it business”. Let that junk go. Every new employee anywhere is best served by keeping their heads down and trying to work hard to get noticed for good work. Start spouting and you’re branded a trouble maker from the jump. Guy - She may relate to them running for some lower office, but they will not vote for Rauner simply because he has a Hispanic stuck in a meaningless job. I suspect my Hispanic cousin-in-law who runs an outreach center in Kane County will do his best to ensure the folks are educated to Rauner’s policies.
P.S. I wish I was too young to witness the first Guitierrez run.

Is Evelyn, the first term At-Large Councilwomen ready to step in and BE Governor of the state of Illinois? That is the question.
It is not beneath me, not one bit, not one single bit, to call out someone who thinks “I could be Governor if I had to” and give me the resume Evelyn has as the rationale for that belief.
I get knocked for railing on Plummer.
I get knocked for railing on Rauner.
Funny thing is, the more I get knocked, the less of an arguement is made … for Plummer, for Rauner, and … for Evelyn.
I have hammered Steve Kim, I have hammered Maria Rodriguez.
Why?
I want to win. I want the best “players” on the “field” with the best shot of winning, and the best shot at governing for Illinois.
It is NOT beneath me.
Evelyn is no better than Maria, no better than Steve, and that is Embarrassingly Pathetic considering Lt. Governor Quinn … became a Govenor.

I was. He beat Juan Soliz in the primary and Hildegarde Rodriguez in the general. The district was majority Mexican-American, while Luis is Puerto Rican. What’s your point?

I am not the co-host of anything, not a state employee not on state owned equiptment.
Bruce Rauner is clueless to the workings of a state, a hypocrite to how a state is run, versus how Bruce Rauner made his millions, and Bruce Rauner is unethical, “moving” to Chicago to get his DENIED Daughter Clouted into Payton Prep, over a child who could be someone like Evelyn described herself.

The same public labor unions that wish to ignore the pension crisis that Jil Tracy is supposed to fix (also the same pension systems she draws on). What is the legal term here… conflict of interest? Maybe that is the corruption and insider deals that Evelyn saw from afar.
Willy likes the status quo. You only get to Springfield when invited by the establishment and paid your dues to the system. How has that worked in Springfield lately?
Dillard and Tracy are scared of Evelyn. Why did they have to bring out Jim Edgar to bolster the Tracy selection after Evelyn’s announcement? If you know anything about DuPage, you would know that Evelyn has been everywhere working for the party. Dillard knows this. Let’s see how much money Dillard vs. Rauner get out of DuPage in the next 3 months.
