Poll has Oberweis leading 52-15

Posted in:

* The Tribune’s poll of Republican primary voters has a wholly unsurprising result for the US Senate race

* Jim Oberweis: 52%
* Doug Truax: 15%
* Undecided: 32%

* From the Trib

Though he has yet to spend much money this time out, Oberweis has 88 percent name recognition among Republican voters. That’s due to not only the family’s namesake dairy stores, but also the millions of his own money that Oberweis spent during one campaign for governor and two U.S. Senate bids that date to 2002. Oberweis also lost special and general election bids for Congress before breaking through with a state Senate win in November 2012. […]

Despite that, the poll indicated little voter fatigue among Republicans over Oberweis’ ambitious and frequent attempts to win public office and the sometimes controversial gaffes he committed along the way. Overall, 40 percent viewed Oberweis favorably while 9 percent looked upon him unfavorably. Another 39 percent had no opinion of him. […]

Truax has yet to introduce himself to many Republican voters — 52 percent said they have never heard of the military veteran and a managing partner and co-owner of Oak Brook-based Veritas Risk Services. Of those who said they were familiar with Truax, 36 percent had no opinion of him while only 11 percent viewed him favorably and 1 percent had an unfavorable view.

The Truax campaign has been almost solely about the candidate’s public speaking engagements. He’s everywhere and he’s received some local party support for his efforts. That often gives candidates the sense that they’re gaining some traction. But in a race like this, you gotta get your name out there.

If the choice is between a guy they know and someone they’ve never even heard of (who could be anybody, even a disguised Democrat, for that matter), voters will almost always go with the guy they know. And since Truax has almost zero cash on hand, he has no resources to get himself known.

It’s gonna take a miracle for Truax to pull this one off.

  1. Oberweis - Durbin
    Rauner - Quinn
    Sanguinetti - Vallas
    ?…! - Lisa Madigan
    ??…!! - Jesse White
    Topinka - Sheila Simon
    Grogan/Cross - Frerichs

    Just let that… “sit”…

    Here is the ILGOP reality;

    Comptroller Topinka is the hope to stop the bleeding before the GA stays Veto-Proofed. If you think this is unrealistic, then you might not be student of 2010 or 2012 politics.

    Heaven help My Party.

  2. With Rauner at 40% and Oberweis at 52%, it looks like they will be on the top of the ticket which doesn’t bode well for the ILGOP chances this November.

  4. Rauner should consider throwing some money Truax’s way and to see if he can help make something happen for him. The last thing Rauner wants it Oberweis at the top of GOP ticket! Yikes. Thanks, Ron!

  6. Considering that all of Oberweis’ statewide election have been primaries, is anyone else a little surprised that his fav/unfav is 40/9? I would have thought there are double that number of Republicans who don’t like him.

  7. Eh. Rauner-Quinn will definitely be closer than Obama-Romney. Any downballot effects will certainly be much smaller in 14 than 12.

  11. Here is a new poll that shows Illinois strongly supports raising the minimum wage, and that 11% of voters are less likely to vote for Sen. Kirk if he doesn’t support raising the minimum wage.

    The national GOP is a one-trick pony, apparently, running against Obamacare instead of broadening the platform to do other things the voters want.

  13. I think that Durbin is not as strong as many pundits think and the Republicans are going to be very sorry they don’t have a stronger candidate.

    Can anyone name anything that Durbin has ever done that distinguishes him from the rest of the members of the U.S. Senate?

  18. “Can anyone name anything that Durbin has ever done that distinguishes him from the rest of the members of the U.S. Senate?”

    For starters, Durbin voted for immigration reform and expanding background checks for firearms purchases. Durbin would vote for raising the mimimum wage. These are issues Americans consistenly support, sometimes overwhelmingly. These bills would pass if not for a minority party putting the brakes on major legislation and thus throttling the will of voters.

  22. Oberweis - whose wife is a Florida resident, to “winter@ and avoid… Avoid… Illinois taxes, will then be followed by an anti-Union, lower the minimum wage Governor candidate with 9 houses… some mansions and ranches… who denied a child in Chicago a chance at a better life, so his daughter, a suburbanite, can take that seat from a worthy child.

    That IS the ticket.

    That is not hyperbole, that IS the ticket the ILDems will present starting March 19.

    Again, Heaven help My Party.

  23. Oberweis will be a much better candidate against Durbin than Traux. Oberweis has money and can run negative ads against Dick and Loretta Durbin.

    Comment by Steve Thursday, Feb 13, 14 @ 10:48 am

  24. I know everyone sees Oberweis as a rich dairy clown with too much money and a giant losing streak - but most of you mopes are political dweebs comfortable with the status quo around here. You guys are not the average Illinois voter.

    Perhaps - just perhaps, Oberweis dumps a ton of loot into this race. With this name recognition, he could conceivably present a non-idiotic and more politically attuned candidacy.

    Durbin might look like he has it locked up like he always does but there a whole lot of crap coming down the pike this year he has to dance around, which ain’t going to help. Add to that the fact that he is way past his expiration date, (and Oberweis does understand those things), it wouldn’t surprise me that there are a sizable number of voters open to the idea of a Durbin replacement. These people have heard of Oberweis.

    Maybe if they can keep Oberweis from, you know, actually speaking and just run the commercials…

    And maybe if Rauner get spanked as a rich guy and loses governor, Oberweis could end up winning the consolation vote as the other rich guy everyone knows…hmmm.

    Dick Durbin is so old and out of touch, you can’t rule out health either. He’s got to be over 90, right? He claims to be a New Deal Democrat, so maybe he’s pushing - what - 140 years old?

    I guess what I’m suggesting is that there is a winning combination for Oberweis that a lot of you nerds are overlooking because we’re talking a perpetual loser and a perpetual winner.

    With money and name recognition, and an aged senior incumbent that has been around longer than personal computers - stuff can happen.

    Comment by VanillaMan Thursday, Feb 13, 14 @ 10:48 am

  25. I’m almost expecting a shadowy group out of Ohio to start running nasty political ads against Oberweis.

    I mean Ruaner has to know how tought it’s going to be running with him at the top of the ticket, doesn’t he? I’m guessing it might cost Rauner 3%-5% just from the ick factor Oberweis brings to the race.

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Feb 13, 14 @ 10:51 am

  26. -OW-

    In Illinois the GOP will always be at a heady disadvantage. Always. I don’t see anything changing that in the near future.

    I assume Quinn-Rauner will be neck and neck all the way to Election Day. There will be no “Quinn coattails” for downballot candidates to ride on. He has unlimited cash and a good campaign staff. I don’t like the man’s politics, but I’ve said for months now that the man’s campaign has been astonishingly effective.

    Will Oberweis get trounced? Sure. But Durbin would trounce anybody who ran against him.

    All in all, I don’t see why the ILGOP should be particularly worried about Rauner at the top of the ticket and Oberweis below him. I mean the ILGOP should be worried because Illinois has a PVI of D+8 but they can’t do anything about that.

    Comment by Johnny Q. Suburban Thursday, Feb 13, 14 @ 10:53 am

  28. Oberweis tried to remove a Party Chairman on Same Sex Marriage, and with limited broad support for his social stances, while Oberweis’ wife… can’t even vote… for her husband, because being wealthy is more important to Mr. &Mrs. Oberweis, then to be committed to both being Illinois residents.

    Oberweis is everything that the 1% finds acceptable, and them ask the “simple folk” to “eat ice cream”

    Disaster awaits the intolerant Jim Oberweis, while saving their wealth, and laughing at voters at every turn.

    Nerd? Dope maybe, but even nerds reject me as much as the “kool” kids.

    Oberweis sets the 1%er narrative, Rauner reinforces it, and the Comptroller Topinka tries to stop the bleeding.

    It’s not that Oberweis or Rauner create a narrative, Oberweis AND Rauner live the narrative. Rauner can’t have Oberweis, while Oberweis feels his wealth, his wife’s residency, a non-tolerant Slytherin drags an image that ILDems will taint all with because the Ground Game and Unions replay both the Nevada Harry Reid race AND the 2010 Quinn-Brady race in terms of GOTV and voter education,

  59. Kirk, Topinka, and Rutherford gave tried to assist, but the ILGOP is still under the premise of a GOP Governor controls the state apparatus, and without that Governor for 12 years, we have seen how that model stinks.

    So, the stress of the H & SGOP Crews had to go at it alone, especially since 2010 losing the Big Chair, the Map, and couple that with no GOTV in the last 4 cycles, at the least, the Dem coattails were able to use a favorable Map to Veto-Proof majorities on both sides of the Rotunda.

    Now, you get Oberweis and Rauner, against the Unions motivated, and a duel 1%er narrative and no real chance to defuse anything until Comptroller Topinka, yeah, the momentum is on the Dem side, especially a motivated Ground Game that took out Brady, leading in the polls except for the one that counted.

    Then Ted Kennedy died.

    Past performance is no guarantee of future results. Every campaign with a contest between two candidates that have never contested before - is an entirely new campaign.

    I want to thank you. You’re reasonable observations (glad to hear them) have been met with the some amazing amounts of Bull hockey. I always wondered how Jones got them all to drink the Kool-Aid.

    To me it is well and truly sad. While i am no Republican it would sure be nice to have a choice in elections. I think both Quinn and to a lesser extent Durbin are vulnerable this cycle to good respective candidates. Unfortunately we will get Rauner and Oberweis. Some one please explain what my choice is this cycle an incompetent Gov who is a democrat or a millionaire insider who is buying an election but can’t tell anyone what he stands for on anything?

    Thanks. The difference is always in My Party about the purity demanded by Slytherin Republicans like Jim Oberweis, who now expects his intolerance to be ignored.

    Even Bruce Rauner’s Crew know Slytherin Oberweis will drag on Rauner, and they both will face similar issues because of the money comparison. The Oberweis intolerant taint will sadly fall on the ticket.

    Requiring purity has a price. Slytherin Oberweis may have to pay it in another statewide loss.

  71. ===Maybe if they can keep Oberwies from, you know, actually speaking…===

    You could be right, VMan, and ain’t that a sad commentary.

  72. No shocker there. Oh, exactly WHAT, however, did any recent Poll suggest in terms of the Big “O” vs. Dick Durbin…?! (I’d be afraid to know just how far behind Sen. Ice Cream is behind in THAT one–i.e. the only Race that COUNTS, ultimately)…!

  73. In an off-year, the GOP should have a better shot at Durbin. Last time he ran was the 2008 Obama wave and before that the 2002 anti-Ryan year. However, Oberweis sets up another easy ride for Durbin. Over by Labor Day with Oberweis on the other side. And Oberweis is in his late 60s. NO crossover votes, nothing to get excited about and a lot of Republicans will just skip the Senate race if he’s the only choice. Sad.

  74. I just adore this idea that with Rauner on the ballot, Oberweis would be the embarrassing one. I believe the Democrats here, but some of the supposed Republicans are a hoot, wanting to go back to the glory days of Paul Findley.

  75. I think the Republicans I discussed are after 1982…

    The Findley snark, while funny, has little merit.
