Rutherford cancels TV ad reservations

Posted in:

* I told subscribers about this earlier today. From CBS2

Illinois GOP gubernatorial candidate Dan Rutherford has sent notice to television media outlets that he is pulling his campaign ads.

The statewide cancellation is effective immediately.

However, campaign officials will decide to resume advertising later in the month, sources said.

* This is what the Rutherford campaign sent me when I asked…

In light of recent outside efforts, the campaign released reserves it had placed on some future TV time. Nothing was canceled.

His TV commercials are up this week in most of the state. The campaign will evaluate future markets going forward.

He is not dropping out of the race.

Thanks.

In other words, he had previously reserved ad space and then canceled those reservations. The ads that are running now are already bought and paid for.

I do not yet believe that this is a signal about whether Rutherford is contemplating dropping out. But it sure doesn’t look good.

  1. Save your money. Use it to rebuild your reputation over time. A cool million in your campaign will help. This won’t get fixed over night.

  3. It may not mean that he’s dropping out, but it’s a clear sign that he believe he has no chance of winning the primary.

If he was in in it to win it, there would be no reason to hold back.

  6. It is smart to conserve the rest of his cash.

  7. You shut down your own spending, when actually HAVE cash to spend, spells more than “waiting this out”. It spells “sitting this out”.

    Cash is the signal sent to others, ask Rauner;

Raise, spend, hoard, or even go broke, money is a signal, not a reaction in this case.

  9. I disagree Word, spending just a couple hundred grand a week was a bad strategy from the start. Wait till then end, see what kind of damage the Unions have done and then determine if there is a path to victory. It actually makes sense to me.

  11. What this signals most is that Rutherford’s cash hasn’t been coming in like he hoped. Campaigns routinely reserve in advance, hoping they’ll have the cash to buy what is reserved.

Could be a full pull out, but I’m thinking he’s going to spend it all.

  12. Word, Republicans don’t early vote…it’s not in our DNA. At least that has been the case in the past but maybe it will grow every cycle. Time will tell.

Comment by Soccermom Tuesday, Feb 18, 14 @ 1:24 pm

  15. Soccermom, I couldn’t find that info on the google. But I think Rutherford is well-beyond “keeping the powder dry.” He’s in “lawyer-up” mode.

But check out the demographic comparison between Illinois and the rest of the United States at the bottom of this link. We are about as close to a national microcosm as you can get. Remarkable.

That raises a lot of questions regarding the current dominance of the Democratic Party in the state. And I don’t think any of the answers speak well to the current GOP in this state.

What the heck, get in the ballgame. This ain’t Dixie. You can’t sell that far-right stuff here.

  18. There will be an independent investigation to determine if Rutherford stays in the race.

But the results of that investigation will not be made public until after the election.

  20. Dan isn’t dropping out of the race. However, what has happened is that his campaign contributors quickly turned off the campaign funding spigot in light of his recent travails. He knows what cash he has is now going to have to last him a very long time. He has no allusions that he is going to win on March 18th but a guy can always hope for a miracle.
