Brady’s new one-liner — “the more I hear Bruce Rauner speak, the more he sounds like Rod Blagojevich” — isn’t nearly as preposterous as it sounds.
Though Blagojevich’s policy impulses differed from Rauner’s, he, too, ran as a populist outsider whose superior moral judgment and iron will would rout the corrupt power elite in Springfield and spark a rebirth of Illinois, as though our problems are simple and governors are kings.
We’ve seen that movie already. We know how it ends.
Meh.
Blagojevich was clinically insane. There are gonna be some big fights if Rauner is elected, but at least they will probably be about something that makes some sense. Rod’s GRT fight lasted months beyond all reason, for instance.
* And, yes, there is a very strong populist vein to be mined in this state. Rod had his schtick, Quinn does it, Rauner has also tapped into it.
It’s no coincidence that both Quinn and Rauner insist on staying at cheap hotels. Rauner has his $18 watch, Quinn has his decades old briefcase “Betsy.”
Quinn is more legit, however. He’s a frugal guy who lives a relatively modest private life. Rauner may have some frugal tastes, but his Manhattan condo with a moat around it shows he has an ultra-extravagant, 0.01 percenter side as well. I’m betting he doesn’t fly coach on business trips like Quinn does. Then again, Quinn loves that state plane.

They are both pretty cheesy with their respective schticks, but Rauner is imported Brie while Quinn is good old Velveeta.

Accurate or not, recent history makes me think of comparisons along the lines of
Bruce Rauner likes to spend his money.
Pat Quinn likes to spend your money.

Rauner made $53 million THIS YEAR. Quinn will never earn that much in his life. The difference is beyond profound.

Quinn understands public policy but is clueless about executive management. Rauner understands executive management but is clueless about public policy. Both are screw-ups as public servants.

This is hard because I don’t think we have any idea who Rauner really is or how he would govern. For better or worse, we know who Quinn is.

Quinn is a career politician. Rauner is a career businessman. Quinn has been a Treasurer and a Lt. Governor with Rod Blagojevich and has been an impotent caretaker governor since his running mate’s impeachment and removal from office. We know Quinn and what he cannot do.
We don’t know Rauner. He has no government experience. He is a multi-millionaire.

Quinn - mostly honest, bumbling to the point of incompetence … except when his political survival instincts kick in.
Rauner - competent but “means justify the ends” ruthless in achieving HIS objectives … if he can’t buy it, he’ll try to run over or through it.
Or to put it in car terms, Quinn is a 63 Plymouth Valiant and Rauner is a Buggati Veyron

Both have egos strong enough to think that the state needs them to be leaders at a time when the number of strong leaders willing to step into the spotlight is slim.
Both like to promote themselves as being outsiders, when in reality they have been deep insiders for a long time via politics or money.
Both like to claim they will change the system. (What politician does not claim that skill.)
Both try to show off they are one of the people.
Both adjust their ideas when convenient.
Neither one seems like the kind of guy you would spend much time with over a beer and brat in a backyard.

Similar to a 20 year old Carhartt jacket that smells of manure and a brand-spanking new Carhartt just purchased at the mall. They both wear farmer’s clothes but one’s been in the fields and the other hasn’t.
