“It’s going to be ugly, and by Labor Day people won’t even want to turn on their TVs because of all the ads,” said a senior Illinois Democrat, who thinks Pat Quinn has only one route to re-election. “He’s got to turn it into a class war. What else does he have to talk about?”
* That effort began in earnest last night when Quinn launched his first TV ad blasting Rauner on the minimum wage. And it has continued all morning…
Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined Gov. Pat Quinn and U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin for a traditional post-election breakfast at the Billy Goat tavern Wednesday — with the mayor telling voters they now have a clear choice for the general election.
“The public in Illinois is going to have a choice between an agenda that looks out and works on behalf of middle class families who are trying to make it from paycheck to paycheck … and those who are trying to pull the rug from beneath the middle class,” Emanuel said, standing beside Durbin and Quinn.
The governor wasted no time blasting his Republican opponent, calling him a billionaire with nine homes who has a lot of explaining to do to voters — particularly when it comes to his position on Illinois’ minimum wage.
“People want to see the real Bruce Rauner,” Quinn said.
The governor also said Rauner’s closer-than-expected race in the primary means “money isn’t all there is to politics.”

Bruce Rauner spent millions of his own personal fortune, and despite leading by double-digits in every single public poll, he barely eked out a win to become the Republican nominee for Governor. Needless to say, it was not the victory Rauner thought he had paid for.

Last night, the majority of the most hardcore Illinois Republicans rejected billionaire Bruce Rauner. Even with public polling that showed Rauner would win by double digits, actual primary voters decided that his anti-middle class record is not what Illinois needs.
Despite the pre-election punditry, these results shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. The past few months have shined a bright light on the real Rauner: a typical, uber-rich GOP politician who wants to slash the minimum wage, gut education and public safety, and cut taxes for the wealthiest so those at the very top can benefit.
That stands in stark contrast to Governor Pat Quinn.
When Governor Quinn took office, Illinois was in trouble – two governors in jail, high unemployment, and the worst recession since the Great Depression. Now, he’s righting the ship with a steadfast focus on creating more good-paying, middle-class jobs.
There’s a clear difference in the race ahead – hurting working people in the name of profit for himself and his wealthy pals has been what’s defined Bruce Rauner’s entire corporate career.
In the primary campaign, voters began to learn about Billionaire Bruce’s Romney-esque career in the private sector, which included a “corporate fraud” that resulted in the deaths of nursing home patients and shady financial ties to an imprisoned Blagojevich associate:

We’re going to learn a lot more about my opponent, Bruce Rauner, in the coming weeks.
What we know right now is that he’s got a lot of ideas — like cutting the minimum wage and cutting education and public safety investments to dangerous levels. They’re the same anti-middle-class policies that got Illinois and the country into a mess in the first place.

Exactly a year ago, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus spoke at the National Press Club and laid out a plan to “rebrand” the Republican Party, and reach out to constituencies who they rightly failed to appeal to during the 2012 elections. But a year later, all the Republican Party has gotten is a year older. No amount of outreach, staff hires, or changes to their primary calendar will change the fact that the GOP’s policy and rhetoric are just as out of step with the majority of American voters as ever.
In fact, a few examples of this failed Republican Party rebrand can be found right here in Illinois.

Yeah, I’m definitely doing a 180 on my prediction last week that the gubernatorial nominees would go dark for a few months, lol.
Boy, was I wrong.
Rauner’s contributors dropped millions on him to beat Republicans. They’ll more than double-down for the general election.
Quinn won’t be able to match him, but he’ll have to keep his foot on the gas til November.

Well I know this much, if the Dems continue to worry about Social Issues as their main agenda then they’ll never get me back as a voter, the economy is and should be the focus especially here in Illinois with our financial woes. So if the Dems want to continue this class warfare agenda then Bruce will get my vote no doubt.

I’ve wondered: Are we sure Rauner isn’t running this campaign as a favor to Democrats to help ensure Quinn is re-elected despite overwhelming dissatisfaction among the electorate?
This could be worth hundreds of millions or more to him in future state contracts if so.

I’m sorry but this election is fantastic, for one of the rare times in this century the people of the state of Illinois are actually getting to decide where their government goes next instead of being force fed some daughter or son of a connected democrat.
These are two different ways to run the state and it will be a good issue. I’m really really tired of aging journalists condemning candidates and races as negative, sham, nasty, visionless, dominated by insiders, ect ect ect before they start. That first quinn ad was a legitimate issue that matters to people and businesses.

So what if the “class war” comes front and center in the campaign? Income inequality is one of the greatest challenges that our country, indeed our world, faces. But because John Kass fleshes it out with a phony quote it somehow is used to demonize the Governor. Here’s a real quote for Mr. Kass:
“Some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world. The DNC response seems… tone deaf. Considering all the Republicans who voted for SSM were re-elected, one of them for a statewide office, and the party’s gov nominee is pro-choice. But, then again, I think it’s illegal for any DC political organization regardless of party affiliation to send a press release that isn’t disingenuous.

2 things: I saw someone say it earlier. No PQ, the race wasn’t close among Republican voters. If traditional Dems pulled their own ballots, it wouldn’t have been close.
Money isn’t everything? No, but buddy, you’re gonna see it slung around in the coming months. And PQ, you’re gonna need some of it yourself. The eye is on the prize now for BR. He ain’t letting up, no way, no how. He beat 3 old dogs despite help from the left. We’ll see, we shall see.

Rauner and Quinn should be a great match up. Rauners no Brady, he will be tougher to beat.
Quinn only took 2 counties, and Rauner should run stronger in Cook than Brady.
If Madigan’s crews sits this one out, Quinns gone.

And so the pivot begins. I don’t know who will end up with whiplash first and foremost, Rauner or the unions. They are counting on the same folks who re-elected Blagojevich to sheeple their way into the polling booth come November to pull for Quinn. They may just pull it off.

To be fair to the unions, they have little choice but to endorse Quinn or sit it out. Sitting out means they have pushed away from the table. Not that supporting Quinn the last time ensured their desired results. They are in a tough spot.

Another huge moment of relevance for ILGOP: stand behind Rauner and risk becoming MORE irrelevant than ever, or stand against him (his $, homes, etc) as being out of touch with Illinois voters and gain some traction against the Dems, though losing in the election. If I’m a strategist, I’m more concerned about 2018 and beyond, then the risk in losing the 2014 governership with Bruce Rauner. Who cares? Look at the Dems of the ’60’s with LBJ and Vietnam, and how long it took to gain traction with voters: Bill Clinton only wins by being Dem light in the 90’s! Focus Republicans and read your history!
Moment of truth ILGOP. I really want to vote for you, but just can’t do it as you are further and further out of touch and risk becoming a dead party with Bruce Rauner.

I have not seen a stick of message-polling in this race, but I believe Kass’ source is mistaken. If Quinn’s ‘only’ option is to hope to win a battle of voter suppression, Quinn is in deep trouble.
The most troubling number for Democrats yesterday ought to be the low, low voter turnout. Quinn got half as many votes yesterday as Rod did in 2006.
Granted, there was a contested Cook County President’s race in 2006, but still.
Very bad.
Quinn has to give working families something to vote for. He can, and he must make the case that Illinois is better off than it was four years ago.
The Berrios race gives you a good idea of how far south things can go if you rely solely on negative ads when those ads lack credibility.
Now, Team Quinn may indeed have a lot more damaging stuff on Rauner. If they do, like pictures of Rauner personally shutting off life support machines in nursing homes, let them fly.
But I believe that it was Rich who once pointed out that on election day, voters aren’t like judges trying to decide who made the best case.
They are more like a baseball team manager trying to decide whether to let their pitcher face one more batter or whether they’ve “seen enough.”
If the manager decides he’s “seen enough,” it doesn’t matter how bad the bullpen is. No manager has ever really taken heat for pulling a guy in the sixth who is giving up hits, no matter how the game turns out…but everyone second-guesses the manager who leaves a pitcher in who then gives up the game-losing home run.
It is going to be very, very difficult to disqualify Rauner.

This is tricky. Everyone “knows” Illinois is mismanaged just like everyone knows Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, public schools are failing, and the federal debt is owned by the chinese. In one form or another, these memes are reported, repeated, asserted, and presented until they become common knowledge or conventional wisdom. The fact that each is demonstrably wrong or unsupported is never considered because it must be true or else everyone wouldn’t be saying it.
If Rauner asserts our $55 billion budget is mismanaged and that taxes can be cut where we have a $45 Billion buget through better “management”, then by all means, lets see the plan. Asserting Illinois is mismanaged and that taxes can be cut, while services can be provided for less money through better management, let us see the plan.

Agree in part. Was looking forward to what our current governor had to say on these things but he needed more time (until after the primary, what a coincidence) to share his budget plan with us.
I mean the fact he had to delay the budget address until after the primary was just a coincidence, right?

That is the environment Democrats always run in. Winners don’t complain about the weather.
Rauner doesn’t have a plan, Rauner will not have a plan, and I am not sure running against Rauner for not providing specifics is a winning strategy.
Democrats seem to be heading toward defining Rauner’s plan for him, which is probably the best way to go. Rauner says he wants to repeal the tax hike, he has yet to provide an alternate revenue plan, so just assume he is going to balance the budget through cuts.

How do we choose the first agenda? By voting for Durbin, maybe, but not for either gubernatorial candidate. In fairness, I don’t think the second agenda fairly describes either candidate’s agenda, either. Maybe he’s expecting an third party candidate.

Oh, you mean looking out for those 9% of “official” unemployed Illinoisans and those additional 6% who are underemployed or gave up looking for work? Quinn has destroyed the private sector middle class in Illinois by bad, corrupt business, tax, and government regulatory moves.
That “minimum wage” garbage postively affects a very small number of people. The average household income of someone making minimum wage is about $55K…they’re second wage and “learning wage” workers usually in a family. When the rate goes up their hours, and jobs, will diminish and disappear.
Rauner will make the case that things will get better for the middle class when government creates an environment that attracts and retains business without backdoor “crony capitalism” deals for the few while driving out the many.
The public pension system needs to be fixed for new and short term employees so that the massive bill for currently overly generous pensions won’t fall on the businesses and highly compensated employees here.
Hit the government “one percenters” for health care cost for highly pensioned retirees and “double dippers” who work after they’re “retired”.
Quinn’s reign has been a fiscal and economic disaster for Illinois. If Rauner can’t communicate that and clearly and understandibly message a palatable alternative, he doesn’t DESERVE to be Guv.
I think he will.

No one has to “turn” it into class warfare. It is. By BOTH candidates. When people of enormous wealth are screaming that those who served the public and are living on micro-fractions of their wealth are greedy, feeding at the public trough, stealing from the taxpayers——–that is class warfare. Can you even imagine seniors living on 30, 40K pension a year( and that’s ALL the income they have) being told they’re greedy when these politicians make that in days/weeks? Bring it on. We are witnessing the ultimate hypocrisy.

Well… I think Pat Quinn is one of the worst governors in the history of Illinois. He has destroyed our pensions… Working to destroy some agencies… Including the IDOC. I was all ready to vote Republican for the first time in the fall.. No way I am voting for Rauner… So… I will hold my nose and vote for Pat Quinn… Again.

The State started doing that last July. A retiree with a $50,000 a year pension pays twice as much for the same insurance policy as a retiree with a $25,000 pension.

We’ve been in a class war for over thirty years and 1%ers are winning. Unfortunately, Quinn is about the worst messenger for a populist message. Quinn combines incompetence with ideology, and I am afraid that incompetence is going to win in the public’s mind. It will be interesting how Quinn’s campaign uses Vallas to offset Pat’s obvious weakness. Will it be enough???

BTW- Several people were saying that the Maag case (to determine if changing retirees for their personal health insurance that was previously premium free after 20 years of employment due to previous negotiated contracts)might be coming up AFTER primary day. Wonder what both candidates will say they are going to do if the Supremes do side with the retirees?

At this time the pension/union issue is dormant until the courts rule on the pension legislation. The real 600 pound gorilla in the room is what happens with the scheduled rollback of the income tax increase; at the moment it is the most important political issue for both the Democrats and Republicans.

The former dancer that made millions as an investment banker after Rahm-rodding Clinton’s NAFTA legislation. Kass is wrong–Pat Quinn doesn’t have “to turn it into class warfare,”–because this Election for Governor already IS! It’s inEVitable when you’ve got one of the candidates making $53 MILLION bucks a year! People aren’t stuPID! They understand that rauner comes out of the Uber-Wealthy Class, the “.01%” Class of Americans to borrow the pompous remark of the candidate himSELF, and that practically ALL of the REST of us 99.99% Illinois Voters are simply NOT, nor ever WILL be, in that Elite Class!

No doubt both of those clips highlighting Rauner’s wealth, no one knows anyone with that many homes, or that much money.
This is where Quinn has the edge. With the gap growing between the rich and not rich there are more people apt to vote for Quinn.
Just look at Ford, he gave his workers more than minimum wage, actually a good wage, guess what his employees did…..they bought Fords! Thus increasing sales and profits.
Bruce Rauner in his own words speaking to lower minimum wage, there is no better ad than that.

Pat Quinn is rich. He just uses our money to live his rich lifestyle. Mansions, limos, expensive parties, hanging with the wealthy supporters - Quinn lives a similar lifestyle as Rauner, excepting Rauner does it on his dollar, not ours.
So when Quinn tries to play the “regular guy” card over Rauner, ask yourself just how Quinn lives as governor and how much of a regular guy a governor, dropping $54,000,000 of our money in “grants” to his voter base, can really be.
Don’t be a patsy about Quinn being a regular guy.

Quinn is living the same way as every one of his predecessors — e.g., Thompson, Edgar, Ryan and Blagojevich, and exactly the same as would Rauner if he were to win. What a ridiculous non-issue!
