Quinn campaign releases new Internet video

* Kinda amateurish

* Script…

“Billionaire Bruce Rauner wants you to know that he’s not just part of the 1%…. He’s part of the .01%”

AUDIO CLIP RAUNER “Oh I’m probably .01%”

“You know who else brags about being in the .01%? This guy!”

AUDIO CLIP MR. BURNS - “Excellent!”

“Billionaire Bruce has 9 homes and took in 53 million dollars in 2012 alone. Do you know how long it would take a middle class Illinoisan to make as much as he made last year? 14 lifetimes. What do you do with that much money?”

VIDEO CLIP MR. BURNS & SMITHERS “Money Fight!”

“Do you want someone like Mr. Burns representing you in Springfield?”

  1. Please, please do a tv buy for this ad

  2. A breath of fresh air, ya, I’m union, retired, I’ll roll the dice on this guy, can’t be any worse than what we have running the show now. It’s a circus, let’s get some new clowns!

Comment by Come on Glenn Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:01 pm

  3. ==What do you do with that much money?==

BR: Oh, I don’t know, maybe I’ll spend it to oust a career politician who is driving good jobs out of this state and killing the middle class. When you’ve been blessed, you should give back.

I would never vote for Rauner, but I could very easily wind up voting against Quinn, and this kind of nonsense just makes it easier.

Comment by Anon. Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:02 pm

  4. Really, Simpsons jokes from a guy who makes Mayor Quimby look competent?

Comment by so... Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:03 pm

  5. “Courtesty of 20th Century Fox”. Drives me nuts when there are simple misspellings in ads like this.

Comment by mjrothjr Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:05 pm

  6. Brilliant. The pundits might debate this, but it will resonate with voters. Politics is not a debate nor do its rules of play bear any allegiance to anything resembling logic and order. It’s about pure unadulterated emotion. Quinn will win in November.

Comment by Reformed Public Servant Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:05 pm

  7. Pointing out that Rauner was for lowering the minimum wage? Legitimate.
Pointing out that Rauner ran against unions? Legitimate
Bringing up Rauner’s company being sued for boosting their profits by lowering nursing home quality? Legitimate
Complaining about exactly how much money Rauner has? Illegitimate. If anyone is going to vote against Rauner because of his money, there’s a good chance they’ll figure out about his millions from other ads that are better and focus on an actual issue. Get it together.

Comment by Timmeh Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:06 pm

  8. I agree Timmeh. The problem isn’t Rauner’s wealth. It is that part of it came from neglectful nursing homes, managing pension funds, and vulture capitalism. That, and it is very bad form to be paid huge sums by pension funds (more than any state worker will see) and then say they are too generous to retirees.

Comment by Jimbo Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:09 pm

  9. What was taught in the GOP Primary?

    Internet ain’t TV…Internet … ain’t TV.

    Trend?

Seen how that trend worked out.

Now, get this on TV after Labor Day, then…

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:12 pm

  10. It definitely will resonate with people, but that audio quality is terrible.

Comment by Pleading the Fifth Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:13 pm

  11. Timmeh

“Complaining about exactly how much money Rauner has? Illegitimate”

Normally I would agree with you. But Rauner tried to portray himself as just a regular Joe, a stiff like the rest of us. Calling attention to his imense wealth is legitimate because he tried to hide it during the primary.

Comment by AFSCME Steward Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:13 pm

  12. What comes next, Cartmann from Southpark calling Rauner a “Ginger” and claiming he’s a wealthy “daywalker”?

Comment by Arizona Bob Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:15 pm

  13. I didn’t realize Proft was doing work for Quinn now! LOL

Comment by Here we go... Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:16 pm

  14. In the words of Comic Book Guy.

    WORST. AD. EVER!!!!

Comment by Normalite Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:16 pm

  15. That’s pathetic, although I cannot believe Rauner ever was stupid enough to get trapped into saying that. (”I started my business, worked very hard, and I’ve been very fortunate . . . .”)

I’d be curious to know if Fox really did provide that with their “courtesty”. Looks and sounds like something that a Young Democrat put together in his basement.

Comment by LincolnLounger Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:18 pm

  16. Who is Quinn’s cartoon counterpart? Chief Wiggins?

The Kennedyesque Mayor Quimby seems too intelligent to be Quinn’s clone.

Comment by Upon Further Review Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:18 pm

  17. ==Normally I would agree with you. But Rauner tried to portray himself as just a regular Joe, a stiff like the rest of us==

Then call it out. Have 30 seconds of Bruce Rauner saying in’s instead of ing’s. Don’t simply criticize him for wealth.

Comment by Timmeh Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:19 pm

  18. Generally Fox is fairly protective of the Simpsons intellectual property…
and if not I have some ideas how they can use Ned Flanders in some anti-Quinn ads…

Hey guys, I can I help with the budget?

    No

    Okely-Dokely…

Comment by OneMan Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:19 pm

  19. Well put, OneMan. I can’t stop laughing

Comment by estubborn Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:23 pm

  20. Like others, it didn’t resonate with me. Don’t attack him for having money, as most people would like to have money too. Attack him for how he got it (e.g., exploiting grannies in nursing homes) or how he used it (e.g., clouting his kid into school.)

Comment by ChicagoR Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:24 pm

  21. I’m sure that to people who already want and need to despise Rauner this ad probably looks good and looks like a winning strategy and a cool message. To a degree it will resonate with some/many voters. But to many more Illinoisans who have had to actually live through the Quinn tour of duty I predict the response to this ad is going to be “yada yada yada–is that all you can say because you personally have achieved nothing for the state upon which to actually sell yourself, PQ?”

Despite his lucky rabbit’s foot Quinn and staff must be aware that he has no actual record of substance or accomplishment on which to run again or we’d be hearing about that, too.

Comment by Responsa Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:27 pm

  22. === although I cannot believe Rauner ever was stupid enough to get trapped into saying that===

He wasn’t trapped, he corrected a reporter who said he was a one percenter.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:28 pm

  23. Maybe he’s just going for that die-hard Simpsons fan niche vote.

If Quinn gets Moleman to do an endorsement ad, I am in.

Comment by Lurker Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:28 pm

  24. Governor Pat Quinn is Illinois’ Krusty the Clown. And kindly allow the linked profane Krusty commentary to speak to Mr. Quinn’s commercial.

  25. ==Governor Pat Quinn is Illinois’ Krusty the Clown.==

I’d say he’s more a combination of Chief Wiggum and his son Ralph.

Seriously, this is worse than Squeezy the Python.

“What would you do with all that money”

BR: “Well, Pat, for one I’ve donated millions to help improves schools.”

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 2:47 pm

  26. Rauner’s wealth should not be a part of this. If this was a Buffet, Walton, Gates, or a similar person whose wealth would dwarf Rauner, would people still feel the same? Go after what he says, his consistency, what he does, his ideas, and how he treats people.

Using Simpson jokes may make it easy to remember the message, but it comes with a PR/credibility price that gets expensive when you are trying to sell an image. This comes off as high school.

You’re kidding right? Rauner’s wealth should not come into this? EVERYTHING is fair game. Welcome to Illinois politics. Geesch, let’s grow up and realize that this is a fight to the finish. I don’t care who likes it or doesn’t like it. If Quinn can paint Rauner as an out of touch millionaire, then Quinn wins.

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 3:03 pm

  28. Adding…. Quinn is obviously Rev. Lovejoy. Preaching to everyone from the pulpit, but flawed himself. (Or Dr. Nick, I can’t decide).

  29. Here is the second Quinn ad, replace Ralph with Pat
    and president with governor…

  30. ===Rauner’s wealth should not be a part of this. If this was a Buffet, Walton, Gates, or a similar person whose wealth would dwarf Rauner…===

    Ok.

Must be worth multiple “Billions”, more than 10 houses, or 7 houses domestically, and 1 additional overseas.

All is fair game. It just is…

    The video on its merits;

    Gentleman’s “C”.

No TV visual after Labor Day? Possibly worthless…

Learn the lessons of the GOP Primary…

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 3:07 pm

  31. Also; when I say “could have had a better governor”, I mean that there weren’t better options presented by the Republican Party.

Comment by Timmeh Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 3:21 pm

  32. -Come on Glenn- got the sense of the electorate; time for new clowns. Rauner is rich? I didn’t know that until just now. That crap’s already baked in so you’re going to have to build a lot more of a case. To the general public a guy who can make and keep money probably sounds pretty attractive given the alternative this year.

I meant trapped by his ego, not the reporter.

  34. Didn’t Quinn push this or some variation of it a while back. I seem to recall some sort of referendum thing (non-binding)

Back 2003, but is was on income above $250,000

  36. Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight. I actually enjoyed this for the first part, but what was with the tin can kid announcer in the closer? People, don’t release it if it’s not ready. Geez.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 3:48 pm

  37. “Amateurish” is a huge part of what makes it work as an internet clip. People are more likely to “share” it than something that’s too slick and professional.

Comment by Brendan Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 4:11 pm

  38. As a Simpsons fan who lives in Springfield, I am appalled at the lack of effort or knowledge the Quinn campaign put into this. How many times has the Simpsons used the GOP meeting gag with Burns at the head of the table? Couldn’t find an easy way to work that in?

Comment by Blue Dog Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 4:21 pm

  39. Wow - voice over OUTSIDE of the Studio. That must be some new technique I am unaware of.

I’m surprised I didn’t hear traffic in the background.

  40. It looks and sounds like somebody let an intern have too much time on the campaign computer. The theme will work well in the hands of a professional.

Comment by Norseman Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 4:40 pm

  41. Michael Bloomberg could own Bruce Rauner, and has a private jet, and homes all over the world, yet left-leaning NYC elected him as Mayor. Since when is wealth a disqualification for office? What a stupid ad.

  43. Yeah Fox Pulled the ad. Copyright stuff.

Comment by Come on man! Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 5:03 pm

  44. “This video contains content from FOX, who has blocked it on copyright grounds.”

    Should have used “Squeezy” instead.

    Comment by Louis G. Atsaves Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 5:03 pm

  45. It’s blocked now, but based on the comments I’m just going to assume it was full of the normal class warfare nonsense.

If you’re broke, don’t hate on those who have money. I chose to go work for them and earned their money for myself. I found it to be a better long-term strategy. If Quinn had better results to stand on he wouldn’t need this divisive, counter-productive message. Teaching envy doesn’t help anyone rise up.

  46. Called it….

Comment by Oneman Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 7:38 pm

  47. Liandro, let me know if you ever make it down from your high horse on top of JJ’s sandwich shop.

Rauner thinks minimum wage workers earn too much, and public employees shouldn’t be able to bargain for their wages.

Forgive me if I don’t shed a tear for Bruce when someone points out that he’s simultaneously bragging about being in the .01%.

And forgive me if I don’t bow down to your self-righteous vision of the anointed sandwich maker worldview, you’re not talking to Fox News mouth breathers here.

  49. STL, you always have to make it personal, don’t you? I don’t know you from Adam, but since I stamp my name on what I say you feel it proper and necessary to make it personal and nasty.

I know where I’ve come from, and I know what I’ve done. My confidence and self-knowledge has been forged on multiple battlefields, corporate board rooms, and as a new entrepreneur in the middle of a recession. You will NEVER get me to feel ashamed of any success I achieve-whether it be military, business, personal life, whatever. And I advise any other person trying to rise up in life to likewise never feel ashamed of what they are able to accomplish.

Rather than “come down from” my “high horse”, my whole goal in life is to pull others UP. That’s how I feel I can pay for the opportunities others gave me. The advice I would give to any ambitious working class fellow is to ignore the class warfare and instead focus of hunting down opportunities for themselves and their families. They’ll come to a better result every time–both personally and professionally.

Comment by liandro Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 8:58 pm

  50. Liandro, the average person doesn’t need your advice, they are out hustling. Only arrogant guys like you and Bruce think you’re the only one that figured that out.

Comment by Small Town Liberal Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 9:17 pm

  51. Again with the personal attacks. I have nothing but respect for guys out hustling, and I don’t waste their time with advice unless they ask for it.

Anyway, I’m done with responding to you in the future. You win from now on.

Comment by VanillaMan Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 11:04 pm

  53. I didn’t get to see the video before it was blocked, and I hope Fox doesn’t block my Nickname on copyright grounds. But this smacks of amateurs….

Comment by Vote Quimby! Thursday, Mar 20, 14 @ 11:15 pm

  54. The Republicans should have nominated Dillard who could easily beat PQ. He could hold his own in Chicago and still wipe the state with PQ downstate. It is much better to get 2/3 a loaf then none at all. Once again, they have managed to nominate the one guy PQ might just be able to beat.
