* As many of you now know, Capitol Fax was one of the many victims of last week’s AOL hack. Rich has interrupted his time off on more than one occassion to post the latest updates to you about the situation, and pressure the once tech-staple to resolving the issue. This was part of a text message thread he sent late last night…

If AOL was truly concerned about its customers, it would’ve warned us about a week ago about this problem.”

Hard to argue that point. As a result of the hack, many Capitol Fax subscribers received auto-generated phishing emails.

AOL’s statement via the Tribune…

“AOL takes the safety and security of consumers very seriously, and we are actively addressing consumer complaints,” the company said in a statement. “We are working to resolve the issue of account spoofing to keep users and their respective accounts running smoothly and securely.”

A Twitter hashtag has been started to monitor the situation. You can follow it along here…

  2. I thought it was odd when I checked my pers. email on Monday morning and found an email from Rich offering me a great deal on new Nikes. I just figured he got bored on vacation and bought a shoe outlet.

  3. But isn’t AOL a private sector company? Just like Comcast, I mean. They aren’t gov’ment, so they must be good, right?

  4. Time to get a gmail account Rich…

  5. “time to get a gmail account”
Not so sure I would. Have you seen their new policy on email “scanning?” yeah, google is going to scan your emails to sell more targeted ads to you. enjoy that gmail account!

  6. Public servant- What are you trying to get at here? The private sector offers many email providers. If you dislike AOL you have the freedom of choice to leave and Use another service. As for government, if a citizen of a state doesn’t like the way its operating, then that individual has the right to vote with their feet and leave for a different state. The fact of the matter is that a large amount of people are choosing the latter example.

  7. that being said, not so sure I would have an AOL account either. LOL.

  8. I feel honored - I received a phishing email from Rich today!

  9. As for gmail “scanning”, it leads to more targetted ads being displayed in the frame. All email providers are at some level doing very similar things. So far Google has had a great reputation for security.
But seriously, who still has an AOL account? Surely Rich makes enough he isn’t using dialup internet. Maybe he can make the tech leap into the late 1990’s and switch to hotmail. I think they have an app to check it on your PocketPC PDA.

  10. And before anyone points it out, yes I’m aware Steve Brown also uses an AOL account. Same comments apply to him.

…..A lot of people are choosing the latter example……

I assume you are referring to the mythical mass migration out of the state..

Really? How many? Do you have real numbers? If we are losing so many why is this not reflected in census data? I’m tired of hearing and reading unsubstantiated comments like this! Give us the data or cease and desist!

  12. Yahoo was hacked last month too. For the money IT folks make, I don’t understand why things are so shaky and insecure with computers after all these years and capital that they have had to get it right! Not to mention, Target, etc….scary out there!

  13. I was also among those that received an e-mail that was allegedly from “Rich” and Capitol Fax but I smelled a phish and I immediately deleted it.
Today, I received another e-mail from somebody named Deb Klegin that was titled “Account Verification Alert” and starts out Dear Account User. Find attached AOL—– blah-blah. I wasn’t about to believe that it was from AOL although maybe it was? How would someone even know if it actually was from AOL or not. Once again, I chose to delete it rather than take a chance.
They should lay a minimum ten year prison sentence on these Internet identity thieves. Better yet, cut off their fingers so they can’t continue to practice their art of deception. I wonder what the Iranian government would do to them if they pulled this kind of crap on people in Iran? My guess is that if they got caught, they would never again be a problem to Iranian society but for that “one time”.

  14. Old and In- And I assume you’re living in a mythical state of Illinois where people are flocking all over the world to come live in this state to take advantage of the abundance of jobs and sunny weather.

==Really? How many? Do you have real numbers? If we are losing so many why is this not reflected in census data?==

Yes, really. And the numbers are actually reflected on the Census Bureau’s website for you to check out!

    2012 Data (Source: http://www.census.gov/hhes/migration/data/acs/state-to-state.html)

    208,755 domestic immigration into IL
274,852 domestic outmigration out of IL
    =Net loss of 65,852 people

*Not to mention the United Van Lines migration study which had Illinois #2 for the most outbound states for 2013.

There, I have provided the data, and now I refuse to cease and desist.

  15. Hard to believe someone still uses AOL.

Comment by Mokenavince Tuesday, Apr 22, 14 @ 5:22 pm

  16. Actually I only spend part of my time in Illinois and I travel extensively with my practice. What I have found in my travels over the years is that things are never as simple as the Chicken Little’s would have us believe. I hear the same thing in California, Ohio, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and New York. I first heard this in Illinois when I graduated from law school in 1969!

Now to your data. So 65,000 over 10 years is mass migration? Out of a total population of almost 13 million this is a rounding error when you consider that this is less than 6,500 per year. What is the sampling error or MOE? It’s even more misleading when you consider that the state as a whole gained population over those ten years. Face it Illinois is about the same as the other older industrial states, no better and certainly no worse. In fact if you want to really complicate things let’s consider the age and wage demographics. Who is leaving? The older and poorer populations. Again we are pretty typical. Sorry but the sky isn’t falling. Let’s be more granular, where is Illinois population declining fastest? Hint: Rural and Small towns and this trend started in the 1950’s. Logical when you consider that Illinois has more towns of 5,000 or less than any other state (Texas and Penn are close). Then there is the Baby Boomers retiring. Your simplistic notion of a recent mass migration out of state is simply not supported by your facts.

As for the United Van Lines data……..get real.

  17. AA still uses AOL because I don’t feel like changing at my old age. Also have a Comcast email because they provide my internet and note no difference in service.
This may be one time AA and Brownie agree on something lol.
One of my kids is a victim of the recent hacks and is mortified because one of her teachers is also on the e-mail.

Comment by Arthur Andersen Tuesday, Apr 22, 14 @ 6:38 pm

  18. A colleague just reminded me that Illinois ranks fourth or fifth in foreign immigration. As long as you are counting migration and immigration you need to count foreign immigration as well. Your numbers do not reflect foreign immigration. What a coincidence, at nearly 64,000 for the same period it puts Illinois at almost a net zero. Unless of course you are one of those who doesn’t want legal ‘foreign’ immigration counted!

Clearly we shouldn’t be satisfied with a growth rate of .4 %. But at the same time the sky isn’t exactly falling. Besides I would think that we should concern ourselves more with the quality of life of our population not just the number of people who live here. Leave that to Texas! Number 50 in wage growth and health care coverage…….

  19. email hacking happens every where.
I don’t know the detials of this case, but it is likely just like most of the other hacking situations. (I’ll not go into the hows and whys; I think we all know them.)
