* I’m in a South Loop hotel with horrible Internet access, so combine that with the need to finish touching up my CAPAG speech, blogging is gonna be kinda light until the afternoon. Check out this 1988 pic. Raymond Poe was one handsome dude back then…

  3. I’ve covered a lot of politicians who walked farms in the wrong duds. Big Jim looks like he’s going to pass out.

If you’re going down on the farm, dress appropriately.

  5. Big Jim: “Hey, I hope you don’t mind, I got up a little early, so I took the liberty of milking your cow for you. Yeah, it took a little while to get her warmed up, she sure is a stubborn one. Then, POW, all at once.”

Poe: “Um, Governor, we don’t have a cow. We have a bull.”

    Comment by 47th Ward Friday, Jun 20, 14 @ 10:12 am

  6. GHWB. ” Gosh, Roy, can’t you just get one of your servants to spritz up your plantings?”

  12. “Now visiting dignitaries/city slickers, this is an Illinois cornfield in April. Funny thing, about ten years ago Lt. Gov. Dave O’Neal visited us about the same time of year, and we had planted beans. I explained that by June, we walked the beans. He asked me if we used a leash. Fine sense of humor that man.”

  13. Gov. Thompson still in disbelief minutes after being greeted with the swipe of a soft-serve on the end of his nose by Vice President Bush.

  14. Mr Poe: Oh Oh Mr. Bush, you just stepped in a cow pie.

    Comment by Joe M Friday, Jun 20, 14 @ 10:39 am

  15. “In a world where farming needs a hero, one man is willing to do the ‘B-Roll’ walking with two other local politicians.

Will this walk lead to better farming? Will their banter lead to problems being solved? Did someone bring another pair of shoes for these three?

Thompson, Poe, and starring Bush in the role he was born to play; Nominee…in…

‘Farmers Are The Backbone of America’

Coming to a 30 second spot near you.”

Thompson: I can’t believe Bush is going to be president and not me. The only thing worse would be if his dumbas son becomes president.

  25. Raymond, you didn’t get the memo on wearing a white shirt?

Comment by Norseman Friday, Jun 20, 14 @ 12:08 pm

  26. Did Big Jim ever have national political aspirations back then? If so, what stopped him? I guess I was too young back then to remember what stopped him.

Comment by Coffee Cup Friday, Jun 20, 14 @ 12:13 pm

  27. CC, I think he gave it a hard look in both 80 and 88, or that was the rumble anyway. The GOP fields started very crowded both times.

Obviously, in 84 he wasn’t going to challenge Reagan, nor Bush in 92. By 96, I think the fire was out.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Jun 20, 14 @ 12:37 pm

  28. Thompson going for the Amish look, Roe the farmer, GW unprepared look.

Comment by 3rd Generation Chicago Native Friday, Jun 20, 14 @ 12:43 pm

  29. Thompson would have made a very good Veep, a very capable executive. I think it was a combination of family issues, a crowded field, and fundraising.

So THAT’S what happens when Rich forgets to tell everyone to keep it clean… Got it.

  34. I loved 47th Ward’s comment, thought it struck me as neither “light” or “snarky.”

    Whatever — well done.
