I’ve covered a lot of politicians who walked farms in the wrong duds. Big Jim looks like he’s going to pass out.

Did Big Jim ever have national political aspirations back then? If so, what stopped him? I guess I was too young back then to remember what stopped him.

CC, I think he gave it a hard look in both 80 and 88, or that was the rumble anyway. The GOP fields started very crowded both times.
Obviously, in 84 he wasn’t going to challenge Reagan, nor Bush in 92. By 96, I think the fire was out.

Thompson would have made a very good Veep, a very capable executive. I think it was a combination of family issues, a crowded field, and fundraising.
