*** UPDATED x1 - Fox blocks Quinn video a second time *** Rate the new Rauner YouTube video - Quinn uses Mr. Burns again

Posted in:

* Rate “Pat Quinn’s Inner Circle”

* And this was posted the other day by the Quinn campaign

* You may recall that the Quinn campaign’s first “Mr. Burns” ad was pulled down by YouTube this past March

The ad quickly was blocked on YouTube this afternoon with a message that reads “This video contains content from FOX, who has blocked it on copyright grounds.”

“All I can tell you is that FOX doesn’t authorize the use of Simpsons imagery in any political campaign,” said Scott Grogin, spokesman for Fox Networks Group.

The Rauner camp fired back tonight. “Gov. Quinn is running his campaign as poorly as he is running state government,” said Rauner campaign spokesman Mike Schrimpf.

We’ll see what happens with this one. I think it might even be the same ad because it has the exact same misspelled “courtetsy of Fox” tagline on it. I don’t recall ever seeing an e-mail promoting the video. I just went to the governor’s YouTube page and found it.

*** UPDATE *** Unsurprisingly, Fox has stepped in with another copyright complaint and YouTube has pulled Quinn’s video.

  1. “B+” for Rauner Ad.

    One word review; Yikes!

Rated the Quinn ad before, no reason to see it as improving of failing weeks later.

I expect to see Rauner ad in some form on TV really soon.

  2. The rauner campaign is obviously taking full advantage of the fact that ALL reporters read WHATEVER is on the teleprompter! http://youtu.be/vk4DYTPPpfs

  3. Rauner campaign’s Inner Circle ad walks the line between positive and negative which increases its effectiveness to undecideds, I think. Use of actual on air footage adds legitimacy to the message of Quinn admin incompetence. A-

  4. I don’t know why you want to take the focus off of Quinn and instead talk about an “inner circle.”

If you’re just going to piece together new clips, you could do the same with just the focus on Quinn.

As for “Mr. Burns,” — I get it. We all get it. But you can’t use it, as you’ve been told.

  5. When Rauner’s advert talks about “Quinn’s inner circle” it zooms in on a picture of GOP state senator Matt Murphy. LOL. Details Bruce!

  6. Decent ad by the Rauner crew - B+ like OW says. Seems mature, not over the top even with some of the production values that I could have done without. He’s right to beat the drum on this issue…it’s got legs. Not sure if the IDOT patronage thing has the same resonance. But let’s see if his camp tries to use it in a similar way.

Quinn ad fails. Again. “Billionaire Bruce?” Please. Most of Quinn’s stuff has a sophomoric feel to it. They’ve obviously adopted an anti-rich guy theme. Might as well actually try to implement it in a more convincing way.

  7. Something about the Quinn org falls in love with messages that absolutely drag. I just don’t understand how it keeps happening. Rauner ad is a “pass” on the pass/fail scale. Clean message, clearly presented. That’s all it takes.

  8. Again. John Kennedy — rich. Franklin Roosevelt — rich. Being rich doesn’t necessarily make you a bad guy. This is not a winning argument.

Comment by Soccermom Wednesday, Jul 2, 14 @ 1:33 pm

  9. Gee
One ad uses television reporters and the other uses old Simpson scenes. One exposes a candidate as possibly corrupt and the other exposes the candidate as having too much money. One ad is narrated by professional journalists and the other is narrated by a high school Quill and Pen senior. One is new and the other isn’t. One message is fresh and other isn’t.

One ad works and the other doesn’t - that is, until the bad ad is pulled for illegal copyright infringement.

If this is the image our governor wants to project as a reason we should reelect him - tell him to pack up now.

  10. Of the two ads the one by the Rauner campaign is the better of the two in my opinion. The use of the TV anchors adds some credibility to the message. The use of the cartoon characters I see as a negative unless the target audience is the under 30 voter demographic.

Comment by Hit or Miss Wednesday, Jul 2, 14 @ 1:43 pm

  11. Word–I get your point about why didn’t they focus exclusively on Quinn. But to me the inclusion of “Quinn’s inner circle” broadens the trouble for Quinn. Even if some people believe he’s basically a decent guy who would never knowingly do anything corrupt, the obvious implication they can’t escape here is that he isn’t a good manager, and that he doesn’t have a clue what his team or appointees are doing with the state’s tax dollars.

Comment by Responsa Wednesday, Jul 2, 14 @ 1:47 pm

  12. I suspect that Rauner has a series of ads in the can, all orchestrated along supporting themes. PQ, class warfare, touchy feely, who knows? If it is a matter of competence, the respective ads speak for themselves.

Comment by Keyser Soze Wednesday, Jul 2, 14 @ 1:51 pm

  13. I suspect beginning Labor Day Rauner will be running ads statewide on all channels at all hours of the day. Quinn will be spending all his time on the defensive.

If that’s what the Rauner crew is going for, they’re basically making Quinn’s case to date: “we had good intentions, some people didn’t do their jobs right, when we found out, we shut it down.”

Pawning it off on incompetence and others is Quinn’s best-case scenario. That’s why I don’t get it coming from Rauner.

Comment by wordslinger Wednesday, Jul 2, 14 @ 2:14 pm

  16. Anonymous, Quinn is known for his good nature and honesty, so of course rauner must try to tear that down. It’s a little like lex Luther questioning Clark Kent’s honesty, it makes for good drama but we all know how the story ends.

    Comment by William j Kelly Wednesday, Jul 2, 14 @ 2:14 pm

  17. Rauner ad pretty good at generally tarnishing an image. Doesn’t actually make much of any specific claims; just let’s newscasters speak for them.
    B-

Quinn’s ad actually works better without the cartoons. Will it work to establish the image of Rauner it wants out there? I guess so. Will it move voters? Maybe with a lot of piling on of better ads.

  18. Rauner ad = pretty good and effective.

Quinn ad = Ridiculously inane. I don’t think being mega-rich, alone, is an instant disqualifier for most voters.

  19. ==The use of the TV anchors adds some credibility to the message. ==

Trust in the news media is low, so why would this add credibility if the news media is untrustworthy? Republicans express more distrust of the media than Democrats, so it is possible that GOPers will say “the media is going after one of their own,” but that does not matter because Republicans were not going to vote for Quinn in the first place.

  20. Rauner ad: B+. Takes a little long to get to the point, where some might tune it out before they hear the real message. Other than that, good.

Quinn ad: D-, and it didn’t completely fail only because the premise will be bought (no pun intended) by some low-information voters. The Simpsons thing, while a cute idea, is stupid to get out there again, as FOX will jump all over it, generating more damage for Quinn than votes.

Reminds me of Brady’s puppy bill that was only an issue because staff stupidly re-filed the old, dead bill in an election year. Unforced errors. Maybe they’ll cost Quinn this time, rather than help him.

  21. Do you think the people of New York City knew that Bloomberg had a lot of money?

Comment by Soccermom Wednesday, Jul 2, 14 @ 3:47 pm

  22. Rauner: A-. The wind-up to the pitch was a bit long but a good hit from there. word’s point on theme is well made, though.

Quinn: F. They can’t even spell “Billionaire,” for Pete’s sake. I remember my first beer, too.

  23. Earning money and being rich = successful

It is what many strive for. Wouldn’t most of us like the rich guy in the White House right now.

Rauner B, Quinn D- and a knuckle wrap for using FOX property again!

Comment by Wally Wednesday, Jul 2, 14 @ 3:53 pm

  24. Rauner ad is a good opening salvo…much more to come I suspect. B

Quinn ad. Really? If it’s new, it’s amazing. Let me try this out, “YOU CAN’T USE THE SIMPSON’S IMAGERY.” Think they got it? F.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Wednesday, Jul 2, 14 @ 3:58 pm

  25. ==Most of Quinn’s stuff has a sophomoric feel to it.==

    That’s almost being generous.

Vanilla Man has it right. Just looking at the two respective campaigns and their messaging operations, Quinn’s gonna have plenty of time to tend to that lawn of his.

  27. Pat Quinn must have done the Amazon deal of Buy one Mr. Burns, get one Mr. Burns ad free.

Taxpayers for Quinn: “Spending millions of dollars of tax dollars on failed grant initiatives, but saving millions of dollars from my campaign donors.”

  28. Rauner ad is an “A”

    PQ ad is a “D”

Dems are on a sinking ship if the only thing they can bang the drum about is that Rauner is rich. For crying out loud, give me a break already.

  29. I went back and watched the Rauner ad again. I give it an A+.

    It is a great ad.

Comment by Arthur Andersen Wednesday, Jul 2, 14 @ 7:39 pm

  31. At bottom, Quinn’s argument is “he’s a success at life, I’m not, vote for me”. He’d better find something better than that if he wants to get elected.

Since you are a teacher, of course, how do you like what your A+ student thinks of the value of your work?

Because you are a teacher, who just showed up for the first time on IEA endorsement day…..

  36. Because you are a teacher, who just showed up for the first time on IEA endorsement day…..

You assume an awful lot here. Do you know this person?

That blogger could be using the word as a nickname or a verb, like I’m really not vanilla.

But then, you might know this individual, their profession, their stand on the gubernatorial race, their reason for stating their opinion regarding these two ads, their opinion regarding the IEA, the value of their work, the opinion their students have of their work, and whether they favor one gubernatorial candidate over the other to the point of mocking.

    So, then I’d be wrong.
