$300,000 a week in July

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has joined challenger Bruce Rauner on TV, with an unusually early series of campaign commercials.

Ironically, the new Quinn ads started airing the same day a new poll commissioned and carried by GOP linked organizations shows Rauner with a double digit lead.

CBS 2 Jay Levine reports as predicted several months ago, this could go down as the most expensive Illinois race ever. With broadcast sources telling us both candidates are now spending more than $300,000 a week on TV and it’s not even Labor Day, which traditionally is the start of the heavy spending home stretch.

  1. Even if Rauner were paying this out of his own pocket, that would still leave him $700,000 a week in “walking around money.”

  2. Commercials and chicken costumes. Nothing else.

    That is what we are about to endure for the next 3 months.

    To the post, Quinn had to get up on the air earlier than normal lest he be completely defined by Rauner ads before mustering a few commercials of his own. No choice.

    I have a hard time imagining a set of plausible circumstances in which this wouldn’t be the state’s most expensive campaign.

    In my eyes, only question remaining is if it will also go in the history books as Illinois’ most vacuous campaign.

  4. It’s not about the money…

    …and when they say it’s not about the money, it’s about the money.

    Quinn needs to find the negative “sweet spot” and drive Rauner’s negatives WAY up, because in reality, 10% negatives before the Primary didn’t get it “done.”

    I recommended Quinn challenge Rauner to a series of Lincoln-Douglas style debates, but I guess that worries them.

    Heck, I would be thrilled if one of those debates was on CapFax.

    My kingdom for a series of L-D style debates.

    Even just one. Hold it during the state fair. Stream it live so the whole state and beyond may see.

    Sadly, I fear our collective Capfax hearts may cease beating from an overabundance of joy and excitement.

    Followed swiftly by those of the general public once they actually see who their choices are during the debate.

  12. Quinn needs to drive up Rauner’s negatives? Maybe, but not necessarily now. What is Rauner’s name recognition? Don’t mention your opponent if most people still don’t know who he is.

  13. I was thinking that if these political commercials were taxed like cigarettes and other things we could do without, that we could use this as a new revenue source for the financial problems of the state.

    Rauner has spent millions upon millions on advertising already but still has poor name recognition. You don’t attack him by name through commercials, you get yourself set up in a little base first. Also, try reading my full comment which begins, “Quinn needs to drive up Rauner’s negatives?     Rauner’s Tax Plan includes a tax on television advertising.

    But not Capitolfax advertising.
