Attention iPhone users

Posted in:

* Some iPhone owners are telling me they’re having trouble sending me text messages. The texts, they say, are displaying an error message.

As I told you yesterday, I dumped my iPhone for a Samsung Galaxy S5, so I’ve left IOS for Android.

* I shut off iMessages on my iPhone and used a trick I found online to get out of the iMessage system. I had do that because iMessage texts from iPhones weren’t being sent to my Android phone. The fix worked on my end because I’m now receiving texts from some iPhone users. But your iPhone may still think I’m an IOS guy and that’s why you’re getting a failure message.

I think the solution is to click on the failed text and then hit “resend as text message.”

As I’m finding out, IOS does not make it easy to leave.

Any other suggestions in comments would be appreciated.

  1. There are a couple other people that I send text to and I have received the same message. It always worked after hitting resend as text. Never had a decent explanation until now why that happened. Thanks

  2. Wait till you try and leave Android! The problem is less about iOS and more to do with Samsung’s wacky version of Android implementation. Which version of Android are you using?

  3. I recently switched as well. Besides turning off iMessage on your iPhone before transferring, you should also sign in with your Apple ID on Apple’s support website - then unregister your device. I found that this made texting me work for some users and not others. Some of those that still couldn’t get a text through were able to get texts to go through by deleting me from their contacts and re-adding. There’s probably still one or two that the problem has never fixed. Reason number 5,432 that iHate Apple………..

  4. I suspect removing and re-adding your contact will fix the problem, since it goes and polls imessage when your contact is created to see if the # is registered with them.

    Also send as text works.

  5. My husband just had the same problem. I had to call Apple and have his phone unregistered. It took several days for it to take affect. In the meantime, if people turn off their Imessaging, they can text you.

  6. Michael Corleone had the same problem leaving Ios. “Just when I thought I was out, THEY PULLED ME. BACK. IN.”

This has absolutely nothing to do with Android. Android uses the exact same text system as every other non-apple phone on the planet. Apple goes to a lot of trouble to make it hard to leave, it’s part of their strategy. This is not a problem you have when leaving Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry, etc. Apple reroutes messaging through their own app. You can do that with an android app, but it doesn’t cause this problem. You could switch android texting apps every day and never have a problem, because it still goes through the same protocols with the phone provider.

  9. Rich, see the comment in yesterday’s thread from “Almost the Weekend”.

Make sure you contact Apple to deactivate your Apple ID from your iphone. If you don’t, you will not be able to receive SMS messages from previous iphone users because the phone number on your contact ID is still listed as being able to send imessages. Hence you will not receive text messages from iphone users.

  12. I had the same problem, seems to be resolved now. My only issue now is lack of itunes, but Google Play works fine. Overall happy about the switch, I do enjoy not having a phone with battery life.
