Quinn wants State Museum named after Dixon

Posted in:

* Your thoughts?

Gov. Pat Quinn is calling for the Illinois State Museum Building in Springfield to be named after the late former U.S. Sen. Alan Dixon. Quinn’s office says the governor will announce it on Wednesday. He’s working with the Illinois General Assembly to make the designation official. Dixon died July 6 at age 86. The Democrat’s political career spanned more than 40 years. He was in the U.S. Senate from 1981 to 1993 and chaired a subcommittee of the Armed Services Committee.

  1. We have not named anything after Senator Chuck Percy, why Dixon? Because he is a Dem?

  2. I suppose it’s a fine tribute, but is there some personal connection between Senator Dixon and the Museum I’m missing? Did he have some role in the museum when he was SoS?

    I’m not opposed to it, I just think the connection is somewhat tenuous and odd. Isn’t there a prominent building or appropriate place at Scott AFB to name in his honor? Or a federal courthouse maybe?

  3. No. The practice of naming highways, buildings and the like after politicians should cease.

  4. Good call. Dixon was a big part of post WWII Illinois history, from Springfield to DC.

    One of the things I liked about both Dixon and Simon is that they came home after the were done in office and didn’t stay in DC like so many do.

  5. ==Because he is a Dem?==

    Oh please. Buildings are named after politicians all the time. I get so sick of the constant victim mentality of some people. Grow the heck up already.

    Dope.

  10. Nooooooooo! Dixon was a fine man and deserves an honor. But what did he have to do with the State Museum? Anybody ask the Museum what they think about this “honor”?

  11. - Demoralized -…lol

    Well played.

    To the Post,

    Dixon is worthy of a building named after him, but I would maybe like it to be a VA Building near Scott AFB(?)

    Would not bother me in the least if the building is named for him, just agreeing that Fed connection and Scott connection could be seen as better(?)

  12. The Illinois State Museum was founded in 1877, and its first home was in the State Capitol building.

    Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Aug 13, 14 @ 10:43 am

  13. It certainly is not “because he’s a Dem”. He lost a Senate race because the Dems thought he wasn’t enough of a Dem. They should absolutely name something for him. The museum? Not sure that’s the right thing.

  14. With even more subsequent discussion to occur at the gazillion buildings named after Abraham Lincoln.

    I wonder how many people will be confused by the Dixon Building Museum that runs Dickson Mounds?

    Anyway, to the post, IMHO it’s a deserving tribute, but I tend to dislike naming buildings after people. After all 20, 30, 40 years from now who will have any idea who Alan Dixon was and what he did? (How many times have you heard someone ask who “O’Hara” was and why they named an airport after him?)

  16. I personally wouldn’t want the Thompson Center or the Stratton Building named after me. Maybe it is a conspiracy. Name the crappy buildings after Republicans. LOL

  17. Afterward, there will be a refreshments and fishing at Jim Edgar State Park.

  18. This is a bad idea. Naming an office building is one thing. Naming a tourist attraction after a politician is terrible.

    What do you want to call that Lincoln Library and Museum?

    Comment by wordslinger Wednesday, Aug 13, 14 @ 1:41 pm

  20. I believe Dixon is absolutely worth of such an honer, and it should be accorded. Perhaps also consider the State of Illinois building in Collinsville, as with Zeke Giorgi in Rockford

    Comment by steve schnorf Wednesday, Aug 13, 14 @ 1:42 pm

  21. Why always a politician. Could we please name something after a taxpayer who supplied the salary, who owes for the pension, and who built the building?

    Comment by Fight Fair Wednesday, Aug 13, 14 @ 2:19 pm

  22. *snark* Last time I checked Alan Dixon didn’t serve as President, win the Civil War or free the slaves.

    Comment by Ron Burgundy Wednesday, Aug 13, 14 @ 4:53 pm

  23. I agree with naming a building, but somehow the Museum isn’t really clicking with me. Schnorf’s suggestion is a good one.
