Caption contest!

Posted in:

* Bernie took another look yesterday at the allegations that Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka had asked the governor to get her son a job at SIU

“I did not do that,” she said. “I just asked if he would consider him. … I’d like to reverse the trend of people leaving Illinois. I can actually bring a family back.”

“I’ve put it out there for anybody,” she said of her son’s resume, “in the private sector as well. … You get jobs and you work by virtue of relationships; I mean, it’s not just putting a blind ad in the paper.” […]

Dave Mellet, campaign manager for Democratic Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon, who is running against Republican Topinka for comptroller, said: “What Judy Baar Topinka has admitted to is attempting to use patronage to obtain a job for her son, which is wrong and possibly illegal. In Judy Baar Topinka’s world, a resume is something you submit to the governor. For everyone else in Illinois, a resume is submitted to human resources.”

Topinka spokesman Brad Hahn said that, with Simon down in the polls and with 11 weeks go to the election, “we expect her to get more desperate and pathetic with each passing day.”

* So, considering the growing hostility between Sheila Simon and Gov. Quinn, and the placement of this Quinn campaign sticker, I’m not sure that Lt. Gov. Simon stuck it on herself during Governor’s Day. A prank, perhaps?…

  19. Neither Simon or Topinka are accountants. Julie Fox is a CPA and currently works as a comptroller for an international corporation. Topinka and Simon are career politicians and Illinois has deteriorated while they were in politics. I think it’s time to make some big changes in Illinois. Vote for every Libertarian on your ballot because we have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Most people who look at the Libertarian platform seriously and compare it to their current party platform will find that they agree most with the Libertarian platform. Will they agree with everything? Probably not, but how much do they agree with their current party? If given a choice between an underfunded 3rd party candidate and a richly funded major party candidate, I’ll go with the 3rd party candidate. They have something to prove. D’s & R’s know there are enough ignorant voters out there who will vote for them regardless of what they stand for but will vote for anyone with that D or R after their name. And if you think Democrats do anything at all for the poor, you are correct. Democrats continue to pass legislation that guarantee the poor will never be able to get out of poverty. They will always blame others but an intelligent person who does their research will find out that the poor will remain poor under Democratic leadership and will have much more opportunities with a smaller government advocated by Libertarians.

  25. I ran into her at the fair in the Dem tent. Was just stopping by to say hello to a friend. It was just us there and another person. Normally you would get the political handshake/small talk, but we just looked at each other awkwardly and went our separate ways.

  26. “Hi, I am Sheila Simon and I am not weird”

Comment by JS Mill Monday, Aug 18, 14 @ 10:30 am

  27. ==”You get your jobs and work by virtue of relationships.”== JBT

Yes it’s human, and this is how it often works in the private sector. Shakman wouldn’t agree. BGA wouldn’t agree.

I like JBT’s openness and honesty, but she holds a high public office. What would be the press reaction if Madigan or Quinn made the exact same statement? Or the reaction on the political blogs and editorial boards?

We either agree with Judy and stop with the self-righteousness, and treat all candidates equally on this issue, or we admit that we hold our elected officials to higher standards than we hold our employers, friends, and family.

    Guess, I’m on my way

    Ya Needed a friend
And the way I feel now I guess
Im not with you till the end
    Guess I’m on my way
    Boy I wish I stayed

    You’re stuck on me
Been a fool too long I guess
It’s time for me to think about home
    Guess I’m on my way
    So hard to see
That a woman like me could wait
Around for a man like you
    Guess I’m on my way
    Boy I wish I stayed

Oh, I’m leaving on that midnight train
And I know just where I’m going
    I’ve packed up my troubles
And I’ve thrown them all away
    Because this time little Gov’nr
    I’m going home to stay

    You’re stuck on me
    I’ve got this feeling up
    Here on my back
    That I just can’t lose
    Guess, I’m on my way
    Ya Needed a friend
And the way I feel now I guess
