DCCC releases second Bost “rant” ad

Posted in:

* With the DCCC’s first “rant” ad, Mike Bost’s defense ad and Bill Enyart’s ad, we’re now up to four rant TV advertisements

* Script…

In Springfield, Mike Bost likes to throw tantrums…

But it’s what that means for people, that’s really concerning.

Bost wasted taxpayer money on a Chicagoland golf course.

But opposed funding for veterans’ disability benefits.

And even signed a pledge that protects special tax breaks for corporations shipping our jobs to places like China.

Mike Bost would make Washington worse.

  1. That’s a good ad that will play well in that district. At least to the people that have never met Bost.

  2. And the Mike Bost impersonator finally lands a gig!

Comment by Anon Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 9:29 am

  3. It’s effective for the non-Tea Party voter.

  4. Solid ad. Didn’t like the end when the kids threw paper back at him, though.

    Comment by T.T. Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 9:30 am

  5. Bill Enyart “His proudest moment? When he was the single “no” vote on a measure that would allow chaplains to go on military bases during the government shutdown last fall, but without pay. But you have to read the Bill? 400 congressman did and voted yes. At least Bost is trying and not just going with the party flow.

  7. Great ad.

I didn’t like the prior Bost-throwing-fit ads because I thought they might connect with voter anger.

This turns it on its head.

And I liked the kids throwing stuff back at him. It showed how childish his actions are.

Comment by Gooner Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 9:38 am

  8. The best negative Ad so far of the cycle.

    Kids at the end? Hilarious.

It’s an “A” - defining your opponent, opponent responds, you keep up the image?

    Yep, it’s an “A”

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 9:40 am

  9. That’s very funny, and funny makes for stopping power and memorability.

Plus, it will force Bost to cut a spot to answer the specific claims. You pile up a lot of votes to explain when you’re in the GA that long.

Best of the cycle so far.

    It is a funny ad.

  14. That is a great ad! The Bost impersonator takes it out of grainy video and into real life situations. Truly love this ad - I give it an A+.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 10:06 am

  15. Not being contrary for the sake of being so, I think this one crosses the line. The impersonator clearly isn’t Mike Bost, so it’s deliberately and transparently misleading. An experienced art director would know this doesn’t put a toe on the line but actually goes more than a full step over it. You read it here first. This one backfires. For that reason; a very rare fail on the pass/fail system.
The only folks who will truly be amused are the insiders, and the race is not about them. Overdeveloped concept, overly executed. Not good.

Comment by Ray del Camino Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 10:16 am

  17. IF people can’t tell that it is in an impersonator, Rep. Bost has already made a caricature of himself.

Comment by Come on man! Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 10:22 am

  18. –The impersonator clearly isn’t Mike Bost, so it’s deliberately and transparently misleading.–

That makes no sense. Read what you wrote: if it’s clearly not Bost, how is it misleading?

What “line” was crossed? Since when is satire off limits in politics? Since never, that’s when.

But if it’s really “over the line,” maybe you can get the mayor of Peoria on the case.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 10:31 am

  19. This ad is five-star fantastic!

It’s clearly NOT Quinn, so it’s deliberately and transparently misleading.

    @FakeJasonPlummer - yep

    @FakeTwoPutt - count me for a yes

    @FakeSheilaSimon - agreed

@FakeMikeFrerichs - my record shows I am for satire

The satire makes it better than good, it’s great, it will be remembered, and Bost addressing it recently, will make it resonate.

Demo, I’m still for that today. Those are real people unethically being shifted from political jobs to union jobs.

Slinger, They’ve got an impersonator throwing papers around that isn’t Mike Bost. Even an idiot could tell. Later, they’re throwing them back. Too clever by half. I predict it will backfire. We’ll see.

Knome, I’ll try to recover from your stinging remarks. You’re such an inspiration to me and so many others who share your mirror.

  26. @A guy:

And those real people didn’t do anything personally wrong. But I will move along since I probably shouldn’t be re-living yesterday. But I’ll get one last dig in that I think that idea is shameful and crosses way over the line. To use your language, doing that “wdoesn’t put a toe on the line but actually goes more than a full step over it.”

This ad, not even close to stepping over the line. Again, your “over the line” meter is a bit out of whack I think . . . actually it’s probably way out of whack.

What satire “works” for you in politics?

Since satire is as old as politics, and mocking the idea that kids even had enough of Bost tossing papers, what works for you? Quinnocchio?

This Ad is getting deserved praise because the first rant Ad caused a Bost response, this is the counter, brilliantly played sarcastically, the best negative Ad of the cycle, so “sell” what is acceptable. Add “sugar” if necessary.

  28. OW. Always a dilemma with sequels; first one worked well, second one a parody of the first and tries too hard. Part of why I’m convinced it goes too far is by how the “Trekkie-type” folks here praised it. That much praise makes it a tad too much targeted.

Demo, I clearly got your BP up yesterday. You haven’t seen them take my advice, so heck, maybe they took yours. I know you keep saying they did nothing wrong. We’ll see. I believe, at least in some cases, they did. I don’t want to see innocent people whacked. But just going along is potentially worse. Not trying to get a rise out of you friend, just looking at degrees. The accusations on both sides are getting to the crazy zone. For every action, there is an….

Does it go too far, or does it cross the line. I’m confused.

I think, no, I know I asked, ===What satire “works” for you in politics?===

So did it go too far, or did it cross a line, and where is the line if this crosses it?

  30. ==I believe, at least in some cases, they did. ==

If that’s the case then let the chips fall where they may. But that has not been alleged to my knowledge, nor have I seen any evidence that they personally did anything wrong. They can’t create the jobs. They can’t classify the jobs. Their only crime (as you see it) is that they were hired for the jobs and that somehow makes them guilty of something.

If a person is guilty of malfeasance for taking a job somebody recommended them for them I’m in big trouble because I’ve done it more than once. Heck, I’ve even taken jobs where I was the only person who was interviewed for it so that makes me really bad I suppose.

And don’t worry A guy, I take BP meds. LOL.

  31. –They’ve got an impersonator throwing papers around that isn’t Mike Bost. Even an idiot could tell.–

Well, it would be pretty wild if they had a Mike Bost impersonator that WAS Mike Bost, wouldn’t it?

I’m glad you caught on. Before, you thought it was “misleading.”

What’s your point, anyway? How does it “go over the line?” It’s satire. It’s as old as the hills.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 2:23 pm

  32. Ah Sling, this one can only be settled by let’s wait and see. So we shall.

Demo, Why in the world would anyone want to interview anyone else after talking to you? And that’s sincerely coming from a guy you want to strangle right now. Peace brother.

“So did it go too far, or did it cross a line, and where is the line if this crosses it?”

This isn’t a wait and see, these are your opinions, so can you amplify “which is what”, and where is your line you kept using?

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 2:44 pm

  34. It goes too far Willie, when you depict an action that you’re trying to be deceptive of being the same guy as in the video. As stated, an idiot can see before long it’s not, which begs the question, “Does Enyart think I’m an idiot?”. If it’s satire, take it all the way into satire, not a half baked approach like this one. Irony, wryness and satire are effective, but potentially dangerous approaches. This one doesn’t do anything subtly or adroitly to meet those standards. It lingers in the middle of “is that him? No, it’s not”. Then leads to “the guy who put this together is more deceitful than funny” Mental note, don’t trust him.

    Does this help?

    Comment by A guy... Friday, Sep 19, 14 @ 2:59 pm

  35. ===It goes too far Willie, when you depict an action that you’re trying to be deceptive of being the same guy as in the video.===

    You said earlier…

=== They’ve got an impersonator throwing papers around that isn’t Mike Bost. Even an idiot could tell.===

So, if an “idiot” can tell it’s an impersonator, how us it being deceptive, or in the realm of deceiving, since you, yourself, say only an “idiot” couldn’t tell what you are harping on. Yikes.

===This one doesn’t do anything subtly or adroitly to meet those standards.===

So it’s not satirical to think Bost is running around with papers to throw in the air, randomly, to make a point? It’s not satirical that kids, by happenstance, have things to throw at a Bost who has papers with him he will toss?

You believe that Bost does those things. That is the only way you can’t take this as satirical. You believe the cuts to people and children are, it could be actual. Again, yikes.

    My favorite…

===This one doesn’t do anything subtly or adroitly to meet those standards.===

    “Subtly”?

So only subtle satire, of obvious caricatures, that are seen as not the subject, so much so, that only and “idiot” would THINK its Bost, but you question that the premise is possible, but not possible, and confused that they may be using a Bost?

===If it’s satire, take it all the way into satire, not a half baked approach like this one.===

The subtly is the fun of the Satire you know isn’t Bost.

It’s Friday, this brain pretzel you tied yourself is in great need of a weekend.
