* Setup…

Today the Bobby Schilling for Congress campaign released a new satirical ad starring Congresswoman Cheri Bustos. In the ad, Bustos calls Mr. and Mrs. Taxpayer in an effort to explain why she broke her campaign promise to give up ten percent of her pay. As she begins to stumble through her explanation, the line starts “breaking up” before Bustos quickly hangs up the phone.

* The ad

* Script…

“Uh, hi, Mr. and Mrs. Taxpayer? It’s Congresswoman Cheri Bustos. I know you think I owe you $34,000 because I said I would cut my own congressional pay by 10 percent. But times are tough, you know? Well, uh, I guess you do. Well, it turns out, um, I ‘misspoke!’ (crackle) Oh, I think we’re breaking up. Call you back after November. Vote for me!”

Heh, but meh - at least for me. Perhaps you disagree.

* From the House Majority PAC…

Title: “Shouting”

District: IL-12

Media market(s): St. Louis broadcast and cable

Start date: 9/30/2014

Amount*: $151,445

*Amounts are given in weekly increments and do not denote the total amount to be spent to air an ad for its full run.

* The ad

Keep in mind that the only generic animal that polls worse than an incumbent congressman is an incumbent Illinois state legislator. Still, not sure this cuts through any noise.

* And in that same race, from the NRCC…

“Bill Enyart has sided with Nancy Pelosi in Washington voting to cut Medicare for seniors and allowing President Obama’s extreme agenda to destroy jobs in Southern Illinois. It’s time for real leadership in Washington and Mike Bost in Congress means security for seniors and more jobs for all Southern Illinois families.” – Katie Prill, NRCC Spokeswoman

* Ad

* Script…

Announcer: For the middle class, Bill Enyart has been a bust.

He’s voted three times to raise the debt ceiling.

For seniors, Bill Enyart supported massive cuts to Medicare.

And Bill Enyart voted against curbing regulations that could kill jobs and cost Illinois’ economy millions.

Mike Bost will change Congress.

Mike Bost will fight job-killing regulations and out-of-control spending.

Mike Bost for jobs.

The National Republican Congressional Committee is responsible for the content of this advertising.

Cookie-cutter.

  1. Bustos earned every moment of these silly ads. And they are completely stupid. It is so sad that this is how she will be remembered. $34,800? No worth the money she will need to spend to justify to voters why she should be reelected.

    It is quite likely that Bustos gave Schilling his ticket to DC. She got to keep her 10%, but is losing a lot more to keep it.

  2. Right now, Bost, like Schilling, have the emotional edge in their favor. 2014 is seeing some sky-high intensity on the GOP side. The incumbents aren’t clearing the mid-term election year hurtle as they should. There are important shifts in turn out between presidential years electing Enyart and Bustos in their districts, and off year. Both needed to have padded their 2012 wins for that shift, and it looks like they haven’t yet.

    I think they both are going down.

  3. VanillaMan- you must have missed the poll released today that shows Bustos up 10 points. Looks like this gaffe wont cost her much more than some integrity points.

    It’s also pretty telling when the only thing Schilling can smear her for his a statement made two years ago in a editorial board interview that was never released to the public until recently.

    She must be doing a decent job in congress. Looks like she will get another two years and keep her 38K.

  4. In local conversations, still haven’t found anyone who thinks that this is a real issue. For the most part, it’s that she underestimated how much it costs to live in Washington D.C. part time and that she probably does need the money. The Republicans are still going to vote for Schilling, no matter what. The Democrats are going to vote for Bustos, no matter what. The few independents I’ve spoken to are leaning Bustos, but haven’t decided if they are even going to vote. They are far more interested in seeing where the governor’s race goes and who they think is the lesser of evils or incompetents.

  5. Bustos should lose and if she does not; then it shows why Congress sucks as bad as it does.
    Also, who is running the Enyart campaign or the Bost campaign?! Amateurs. It is like watching a high-school fight over prom queen votes, sad and pathetic on both sides. Amazing Bost has not hit Enyart on his 4-5 houses and multi-millionaire status or the fact that Enyart is part of the St. Clair machine that has but in place a heroin addicted judge and judge who ODs on cocaine.

  6. Schilling’s ad against Bustos is juvenile, and many would say sexist.

    My friend, you must be the most wishful thinker on this blog! It seems as though, in your mind, all anti-Bustos messaging sticks and all anti-Schilling messaging misses the mark!

  10. I saw a Rauner add streaming through CBS yesterday. It was really jarring, I hadn’t involuntarily seen a political commercial in years and they finally found me. Just when I thought I was out…

    What poll is that? Thanks in advance for the link to that poll.

  13. Hard to rate. I liked it, but Schilling’s Bustos ad seems a little inside baseball to me. I don’t know how many voters are already aware of the controversy about her promise to dock her own pay. If they do know, this ad will likely resonate and make them laugh while the story continues to fester and damages her reputation. If they don’t know about it or did not see the scathing editorial about her, this ad may make no sense at all to them.

  15. Seems to me the Bost and Enyart negative ads about each other completely balance each other out. Neither will move the needle and both are a waste of money.

  16. I hope this is the last ad like this, because its only cute the first time. I avoid TV in my district due to bleeping Iowa politics, so I wont find out if it runs again.

    She should have fixed this a long time ago, she can’t be that poor (Unless she foolishly bought real estate in DC instead of renting..)

  19. I’m not sure why Schilling’s peeps went the “humor” route. “Funny” has to be funny to work, and this one not so much.

    Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 1:01 pm

  20. Cheri Bustos is so far ahead of Schilling in Peoria and Rockford that it doesn’t matter what he says. Although I think it highly inappropriate to have someone speaking to a voter as Cheri Bustos, but hey, Schilling has never seen an ethical line he didn’t cross. Bustos wins. Schilling loses again and goes back to selling VISAs to foreign nationals!

  22. Bost is toast.

    He is the Joe Walsh of Southern Illinois.

    Independent voters select the person they think will be he least annoying and least likely to embarrass them.

    Bost is losing on both fronts with this ad.

    Giving him even a slight chance would require a massive infusion of cash just to be in the St. Louis market, and no right-minded campaign team is going to do that given the play in other races.

    Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 1:28 pm

  23. I am waiting for the Bost response ad. Enyart criticizes Bost for going off when Madigan tried to shove billions of dollars of cuts from working families without a debate or even time to read an analyze over the Bill.

    This is exactly what Enyart has done, just sat there and let Obama and Pelosi take it to middle class families. Especially in his district.

    This district should be booming with jobs but because of the Obama war on coal we are way behind. We are literally sitting on the key to low energy costs and economic growth and democrats like Enyart who are supposed to support workers just sit there.

    If Bost or anyone else will go stir things up, I’m in. I’ll buy tickets and pay the freakin fine when he goes off on the house floor in DC.

    Comment by the Patriot Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 1:30 pm

  24. Too bad for the GOP that they couldn’t find a couple better candidates to run against two very vulnerable Democrats in an off year with a very unpopular governor.

    Comment by Chicago_Finest Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 1:31 pm

  25. Schilling is down by 9 points in the CapFax poll. Those I talk to in IL-17 do not care about this issue. These candidates don’t have much in common and if this were a primary then the Bustos 10% would actually hurt her probably.
    Deciding to vote for the Democrat or the Tea Party Republican does not typically come down to an obscure pledge like this.

    Comment by IL17mania Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 2:00 pm

  26. Sheen - Enyart has rentals properties and pension income. He’s no millionaire, what do you base that claim on? Wasn’t the case in the tax returns he released last cycle. And attacking someone on an earned pension in that district is beyond a bad idea.

  27. –This district should be booming with jobs but because of the Obama war on coal we are way behind.–

    Guess you missed the news on that shale oil and gas boom. From the WSJ:

    –David Crane, CEO of power generator NRG Energy Inc.NRG +0.03%, says the U.S. natural gas boom is hurting the coal and nuclear industries more than expected.

    “Natural gas is in the process of wiping out the coal industry,” Mr. Crane says, speaking at the WSJ’s ECO:nomics conference in Santa Barbara. “It’s a big shock as power generator. It’s wiping out the nuclear industry quicker than we thought.”–

  28. This is probably a swing and miss for Schilling…because of the tough economy a lot of voters look at that and think to themselves that they wouldn’t give up that much money either, the average voter couldn’t afford it so they ignore the ad, filter it out as election retoric. This just shows how poorly the movers and shakers in Schillings campaign understand the people they ask to cast a vote for them.

    Comment by Bulldog58 Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 5:34 pm

  29. While I agree there appears to be a disconnect with the movers and shakers in schillings campaign, there is an even bigger disconnect with Bustos from the people. Needing the money is not the case for Bustos. Lets remember, she bought a condo in DC, owns another condo in Des Moines, and has a home a block from Short Hills Country Club in East Moline. It doesn’t sound like she needs the money. she simply refuses to honor her promise.

    My gosh, man, are you even paying attention? Have you seen the amount of money both the NRCC and the DCCC are putting in the St Louis market for Bost and Enyart? Have you seen the amount of money Crossroads GPS has put in the St Louis market for Bost? Seriously, these campaign teams have already flooded the market with cash. Spend some time learning before speaking.
