Sign of the times?

Posted in:

* So, what happens when a campaign doesn’t have a lot of extra money and yard signs still need to go up? Well, they could choose to cut off part of a 2010 Quinn/Simon sign and repurpose it…

The above photo was taken yesterday in central Illinois by a longtime friend.

  1. It looks like Quinn and Durbin are standing there laughing at her.

    Life imitates art.

  2. That’s just sad. Don’t bother.

  5. Why would anyone think that was a good idea.

  9. Oh, Sheila…..sigh.

I agree with Nonplussed - it does look like Quinn and Durbin are distancing themselves and laughing at her.

If you think Rauner doesn’t have signs in the right of way, who are you trying to fool.

Signs don’t vote, this sign doesn’t even… sign.

  13. ==All 3 in a public right of way==

Half of the campaign signs I see right before elections are in a public right of way. They’re like weeds.

  14. Sheila Simon for 2/3 of Illinois!

Comment by Demoralized Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 4:32 pm

  15. I guess she feels like being from Carbondale she can cut off the bottom half of the state from her “campaign.”

    Comment by Hank Z Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 4:35 pm

  16. I heard that that Judy Barr Topinka whispered that idea to Sheila as a joke. You know– recycle, thrift, etc.

Comment by Responsa Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 4:36 pm

  17. Was she at the thing with the President yesterday..

You know things are going tough for her when the signs have bow-ties on them…

  18. Oh, so this is what the 16th floor is laughing at.

Comment by Dirty Red Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 4:38 pm

  19. Let’s see now—was it Pat not wanting to be linked to Sheila or was it Sheila not wanting to be linked to Pat? Hmmm? Who was holding the scissors when last seen? Actually, this is what they need more of in Springfield–frugality! Maybe Sheila was a “closet Republican” all along and now it is just starting to bubble to the surface?

Used to be that only happened 48 hours out. Now, sadly you’re right. They’re also the last creeps to pick them up.

  21. Desperate and not professional but that has been Sheila Simons campaign all along.

    Comment by Max's Mom Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 4:55 pm

  22. Hey A guy- I noticed driving around Decatur this weekend there were several large displays for Republican candidates some with large signs for Rodney Davis and others but no Bruce Rauner signs. Not even the small yard signs in these displays. Any idea why they’re all missing?

Comment by Roadiepig Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 4:59 pm

  23. Might have made more sense to keep the sign intact and simply put an item over Lt. Governor that read “treasurer”.

    So it would have read:

    Governor
    Quinn
    Simon
    Treasurer

Comment by Downstate Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 5:00 pm

  24. Could be worse. At least “Cohen” isn’t crossed out on the sign.

Comment by Robert the Bruce Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 5:05 pm

  25. Simon has a commercial up—emails sent around– a positive and negative one stop shopping ad. hits Topinka hard, has lots of Sheila talking and the obligatory bow tie reference.

Don’t know Roadie, Decatur is a long way from home for me. Don’t get there often purposely or accidentally. Can’t tell ya.

    .
… it is called ‘lack of ground game because they just KNOW they are going to carry this part of the state’…that and the local field co-ordinator is just along for the ride.

  28. At least glue a picture of a banjo on it.

Comment by VanillaMan Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 5:47 pm

  29. I saw more Rauner signs in Decatur than Andy Manar signs this weekend.

Comment by Rayne of Terror Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 6:06 pm

  30. Pathetic…considering she very likely didn’t pay for these signs in the first place and backstabbed the guy who did.

Comment by anon Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 6:13 pm

  31. Before plastic signs came into fashion, it was not unusual for cardboard signs to be altered with the addition of a sticker or a paste on label correction like the new punch number, election date or something similar. Never seen it done with a plastic sheet before.

Comment by Under Further Review Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 6:22 pm

  32. can a candidate forfeit an election? or is there like a million vote rule or something?

Comment by PoolGuy Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 6:42 pm

  33. I drove down 51 to Carbondale this weekend and spent some time driving around southern Illinois. I saw a lot of Republican signs, including the only Rauner signs (and there were a lot of them)I’ve seen. They outnumbered the Democratic signs about 3 to 1 (considering the geography, that is not surprising). However I saw one, only one, sign for Simon. Even in Carbondale itself I did not see any Simon signs.

Thanks for your answer. I wondered if it was overconfidence or poor field operations too. Saw plenty if Rauber signs in both Speingfirkd and Bloomington driving around last week. Just not in the belt line area of Decatur, nor in neighborhoods. Just seemed strange that there were none in the big displays

Comment by Roadiepig Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 7:51 pm

  36. There is a yard sign in Decatur over by the airport with Quinn for Governor and Simon for Comptroller on the same sign. I had to look twice since I thought it was a surplus Lt. Gov. race one.

Comment by Ilmarinen Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 7:57 pm

  37. Jeepster wins.

Comment by Rich Miller Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 7:59 pm

  38. I doubt it was actually the campaign that did it. It was probably just a volunteer. Talk about making something out of nothing.

Comment by Anon Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:06 pm

  39. ===It’s like the Charlie Brown Christmas tree.===

No no, she’s like Edward Scissorhands. :p

    Comment by Angel's Sword Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:42 pm

  40. First of all, it is hard for me to believe that the campaign would use a defaced sign like that. Homemade signs using poster board and permanent marker (both of which can be purchased at a Dollar Store) would look far more dignified.

Comment by Ron Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 10:05 pm

  41. Let’s be real here, it’s probably a Democrat who just had a previous sign and thought it would be creative to show their support somehow. Unless there’s actually more signs like this, I really doubt her campaign would be that desperate…
