* Here comes the Gold Star ad…
Pat Quinn is the best political “closer” I’ve ever seen. He’s also a man of habit. We saw this exact same “Gold Star” ad in the 2010 primary and another in the general election.
So if history is any guide, we’ll soon see a big economic development story, a “You know me” ad and one last major negative hit on his opponent.

He never needed to save this kind of stuff for the last weeks. This was what his voter base needs to see and remember. Looking back over the millions spent on crappy anti-Rauner ads you have to wonder why he couldn’t rise above his opponent as a confident leader who could ignore the cat calls and insults thrown upon him just as it always is with every governor.
But no, we all had to endure the mud and the lies and the demonizations. If he wins, he wins no mandate for change, no confirmation of how well he is doing his job, no support from half the voters in most of the counties in Illinois.
When you campaign as a mud thrower and a liar, we all lose, even if you do win.

Gov Quinn is an very genuine man! He makes mistakes but I believe in him and these stories are a small glimpse of the real PQ.

As a political junkie this ad still hits home. I was wondering when this would pop up again. Raunerbots critique this ad all you want. Rauner has the same opportunity to air an ad regarding all his charities and philanthropic donations, but he hasn’t. One should ask the question if that’s because he has terrible consultants or nobody is willing to vouch him. You be the judge.

All Rauner positives on endorsements.
Tells me Quinn internals still worry him.
Unless you have inside scoop Rich those adds might be on hold.
First to go all positive usually has reason to feel positive.

I remember being with the then-Lt Gov at an event, maybe it was 2008. After we were done and out in the parking lot I asked him what he was up to next and he said he was headed to a soldier’s funeral a 3 hour drive away. He was solo, no driver, no staff.
It’s not like the press corps follows the Lt Gov around. You don’t do that if you don’t care.

Very disappointed that Quinn feels the need to use attending military funerals in a political ad.
Pat Quinn: Cares about deceased veterans, but those veterans still living must wait behind his political appointees to get a state job.

I didn’t think repeats were a good idea, but this ad is a great reminder of how genuinely Quinn cares about deceased veterans and their families. I’ve seen him after he attended a funeral and he was emotionally drained.

I never see Quinn talk about police officers killed in the line of duty. Wonder why he Dosent talk of them like the veterans he speaks of when they pass on?

You want to see something that ain’t there.
The endorsements are the best thing he has. And he’s going to beat them like a drum. Shows at least someone other than his wife has something good to say about the guy.

Rauner’s endorsement ads do work, because they can make one doubt all the attacks on him. There is still some residual credibility in newpapers, especially when they all agree on something. He will stick with them.
I think his “business success” ads still could be a differentiator, if he can pull them out of somewhere this week.
I have an underlying loyalty for Quinn, established long before I got into politics. I am a veteran and veterans’ advocate and he has been a real and sincere ally for decades. I have sat with him at local funerals. No one else in Illinois politics can hold a candle to him in loyalty and care for those who serve, though some sincerely do their share.
When someone else uses gold star ads for political purposes, we might doubt their sincerity. Quinn has more than earned the right to portray that reality about what he believes and has done. I view those ads as a compliment, coming from him.

That doesn’t track; most of those endorsements don’t refute those attacks, and the commercial surely doesn’t get into it. I think the universe of people who think, “You know, I’m uncomfortable with the idea that Rauner ran all those negligent nursing homes and threatened that woman, but the Daily Herald endorsed him, so I guess that didn’t happen!” is vanishingly small.

Walker well said and thanks for serving and being a advocate.
However admirable it is on Quinn’s part that in itself dosent make him qualified to be the Governor.
I’m not sure either guy has the answers, I am sure this state has serious issues that need to be addressed.
Let’s hope the winner has some answers

Adlai thanks for your comment. Could be wrong but I think we are past the phase when the specifics of ads are paid much attention to. We are now in the realm of fuzzy images and emotional reactions. It doesn’t matter if specific claims are denied. What matters is a shift to: ” maybe he’s not such a bad guy after all.”
You could be right. We shall see.

I wish Quinn would have actually done something for the vets. Out of all the political hacks that showed up at IDOT, how many were vets? By the way the 58 he laid off are still here and will be probably kept on if he wins.
