No, your eyes didn’t deceive you

* We had a massive site crash last night. Yesterday’s posts have disappeared. The crash appeared to be related to the outage from earlier in the week.

And, no, Bruce Rauner did not buy my hosting company.

At least, I don’t think so.

Carry on.

  7. I wouldn’t put it past Rauner to have a couple black-hat IT guys on his staff.

If you’re a thug — and practiced in the arts of postmodern, bustout thuggery as he is — then black-hats are a must-hire. One of the first hires, actually.

  15. He doesn’t need to buy the company, just hire a couple of hackers to crash the servers. Wouldn’t surprise me any if that was happening since it’s been happening on a regular basis. Wouldn’t even need to be Rauner’s people, but just some over zealous supporters.

Another possibility is heavy traffic this close to the election, although it was crashed around 10 last night, so that is rather late for heavy traffic.

  35. The interesting thing about these comments especially is that if Rauner *does* pull out a win — he won’t, but if he does — this kind of cynical, conspiratorial talk will be a core foundation of his administration.

“Who did Rauner buy off to get on board?”

    “Who did Rauner threaten?”

“I was threatened by Rauner, but I refused to give in.”

“Rauner promised me money for my re-election so I had to vote. I did. I had no choice.”

Comment by Frenchie Mendoza Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 9:52 am

  36. Rich, Any chance you were hit with a DDOS attack that brought your server down. They are a bigger and bigger problem as this live display shows http://map.ipviking.com/ . These attacks can now be rented at really cheap rates ($5 for an hour) see http://goo.gl/imhPSZ. They are causing problems for schools as students use them to get out of work using online resources.

  37. I return to my earlier tinfoil hat theory.

    http://blogs.reuters.com/great-debate/2014/01/02/lets-make-candidates-pledge-not-to-use-bots/

“These days, campaign managers consider interfering with a rival’s contact system an aggressive campaign strategy. That’s because one of the most statistically significant predictors of voter turnout these days is a successful phone contact from a party supporter the night before the election. This is what has driven up invasive robo-calls. In 2006, automated calling banks reached two-thirds of voters and by 2008 robo-calls were the favored outreach tool for both Democrats and Republicans. Incapacitating your opponents’ information infrastructure in the hours before an election has become part of the game, though there have been few criminal convictions of party officials caught working with hackers to attack call centers, political websites and campaign headquarters. Republican National Committee official James Tobin was sentenced to 10 months in prison for hiring hackers to attack Democrat phone banks on Election Day in 2002. But we do know that partisans regularly launch denial of service attacks – Obamacare websites have been recent targets. If an aggressive move with technology provides some competitive advantage, some campaign manager will try it.”

If you really think Bruce Rauner wouldn’t stoop this low, you haven’t been paying attention.

  40. Great to see Capitol Fax back up and running again. I wondered whether there was just too much traffic for the server. I’d hate to think that this site was hacked and don’t see any reason why it would be hacked. Rich is fair to everybody.

Then again, Quinn was pulling away in the online poll…

I’m trying to picture Pat Quinn and his staff meandering through a data center unsupervised. The whole concept could make one’s eyes bleed…..

Quinn would probably want the legislature to legislate new safety provisions again ‘blade servers’ because people could hurt themselves…..

“What happens if I press this big red button….”

Yup. Could totally see it happening…

  62. The timing of this is one hell of a coincidence. Coincidences happen all the time. I just don’t particularly trust coincidences.

I’m fairly sure it’s just coincidence, but given the number of overweight twenty something Ayn Rand loving geeks who work for his campaign……
nah I am not going to go there. Those guys are too fat to crawl into the bowels of Rich’s computer. That’s how you would do it right? Crawl and use your Swiss Army knife to cut the wires? This is a political geek “Guns of Navarone”.

Lotsa good stuff in yesterday’s posts. The ballad of Rauner, the poll etc etc.

I think the posting here pushed the video to over 3000 hits very quickly. Or at least helped push.
