  1. I’d be honored to have your vote too.

If you can’t remember “Scott Summers”, just write-in The Cyclops. Get it?

Comment by Scott Summers Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 6:52 pm

  2. Weak ending. He’s been painted as an out of touch, uncaring and ruthless rich guy. This ad doesn’t make a case for why him other that he’s not Quinn.

    Gentleman’s “C-”.

Comment by Norseman Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 6:55 pm

  3. In a choice between voting against a Democrat or voting against a Republican, Illinois casts more votes against the plutocrat Republican.

What was Rauner’s affirmative message? I missed it.

Comment by Carl Nyberg Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:00 pm

  4. Wow, poor very poor

Comment by MIMI Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:01 pm

  5. What Norseman said.

    Comment by Jack O'Lantern Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:02 pm

  6. Now that the secret’s out that he’s rich he doesn’t have to wear the Carhartt coat or fleece vest any longer?

Comment by hisgirlfriday Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:02 pm

  7. I will give it a D.

I agree with Norse, but I am deducting a few points because I do not get the sense from the tone in his voice that he actually wants the job.

Somehow, he took the classic Reagan “Morning in America” ad, turned it inside out, and made me so depressed I want to go back to bed.

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:05 pm

  8. Very very good close will work well down state.

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:10 pm

  9. C’mon Rich…open up comments on the Dan-Joe debate.

    I will start:

    “Jane, you ignorant….”

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:11 pm

  10. Rich I know weekends are time to relax, but being the home stretch can we expect important up-dates?

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:12 pm

  11. NOW Bruce wants my vote!

    What a Dope.

    Look, it’s barely a Gentleman’s “C-”

Going negative AND asking for a vote with boarded up buildings?

    This is the most tone-deaf close/response to Quinn’s close/”We need ANOTHER close…lol.

It’s an embarrassing pathetic pandering answer to Quinn’s smooth “ask”

Who the heck is running the Rauner Shop?

You are answering Quinn’s close with yet another close?

    “Dear Bruce,

Coffee is for Closers. Thanks for being our pigeon

    Signed,

    Your Ad buyers”

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:16 pm

  12. I’m sick of his disparagement of IL just to score points off Quinn. It’s a net negative ad with the same old talking points delivered in a singsong, insincere manner.. D-

Comment by my two cents Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:16 pm

  13. ===C’mon Rich…open up comments on the Dan-Joe debate.===

    No.

    lol

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:19 pm

  14. Weak like all his positive commercials. His only positive point appears to be that he is not Pat Quinn. That’s a pretty weak argument as to why people should vote for him.

Comment by Pelonski Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:21 pm

  15. That’s just it, willy.

I have the second-to-last-closer (s’pose it was a fluffer) an E for “egomaniac” for using “I” or “Bruce” nine times.

This ad goes the opposite direction. It is a “THEM” ad.

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:25 pm

  16. This is a terrible ad that portrays Illinois and its Government in a horrible way. How dare this out of touch plutocrat portray our state in such a negative fashion!

Our state has no unemployment, the lowest taxes, highest income, perfect schools and the most perfect corruption free government on the planet. Our medicare and pension systems cannot be matched by a single other state! Not a single penny of taxpayer money is wasted in this State. There is absolutely nothing to shake up. We are absolutely perfect and we need to reelect everyone who lead us into this state of perfection and Heaven. Immediately.

    /snark/

    Comment by Louis G Atsaves Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:26 pm

  17. D. I was expecting a more positive closer.

    Comment by G'kar Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:27 pm

  18. People are not trudging to the polls to vote against Mike Madigan.

    History has proven it.

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:27 pm

  19. as for Proft being shocked his memo became public, please.

Comment by Yellow Dog Democrat Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:30 pm

  20. I don’t know that this one will change a single voter’s mind or help make up an undecided voter’s mind (if there are any undecideds left), but Rauner in this ad comes across as composed and calm and competent. It’s just the right feel for the final weekend of the campaign. Despite the cynics’ eye-rolling here, it’s clearly aimed at, and I think touches, the exposed nerve of so many people in both parties who just want Illinois to be better and to be put on a different track.
    B.

  21. “I’m Bruce Rauner and I’ve lost my jacket…”

    – MrJM

Comment by MrJM Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:32 pm

  22. MrJM wins the Internet. Again.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:36 pm

  23. What was that about knowing who was winning based on the ad being run?

    Comment by Lord Stanley's Cup Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:41 pm

  24. B+ - I kinda liked it. It was consistent with his campaign theme (Quinn is similar to Blagom etc.). While somewhat negative, not as brutal as the $78 baby killing Quinn ad I just saw.

Comment by Soccertease Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:45 pm

  25. “The Machine has been runnin’ things…”

Bruce Rauner: I put the (mega) “G’s” in “ostentatiously droppin’ my G’s.”

Comment by crazybleedingheart Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:47 pm

  26. Maybe he took Darmouth’s seminar on “Gerunds and the Etiology of Hick Mistrust.”

Comment by crazybleedingheart Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:51 pm

  27. I saw the commercial earlier on TV and thought it sounded a lot like the Sun-Times editorial, the “brink of permanent decline” thing.

I found the commercial to be negative and depressing, and worst of all, untrue. Does Illinois have a ways to go to improve even more? Of course. But Illinois has improved in important ways. Our unemployment rate is down, we paid down some bills, we got SSM and MMJ, we passed pension reform for new workers, expanded health insurance to cover more Illinoisans, etc.

I’ve noticed huge volumes of rush hour traffic in Chicago lately. That’s a sure sign of impending economic disaster, all those out of work people driving around.

Comment by Grandson of Man Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:51 pm

  28. Or maybe I just don’t know how the point-oh-one-percenters talkify.

He apparently earned high enough marks in HBS’ “Investin’ OPM”

Comment by crazybleedingheart Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:53 pm

  29. Yeah Yellow Dog Democrat, Rauner has worked his tail off and dumped tons of his own money into this campaign, and he really doesn’t want to be guv. Sheesh

My hope is Rauner finishes this thing off and Yellow Dog finds some humility.

Comment by anonano Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:58 pm

  30. “Was Jim Edgar a career politician?

    Signed,

    Irony”

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 8:02 pm

  31. It’s not too bad. I think there are considerable voters out there who are really tired of same-old, same-old players in Springfield but have been reluctant to stomach voting for Daddy Warbucks. This one might get him some of those.

Comment by dr. reason a. goodwin Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 8:06 pm

  32. If he’s still making the case that Illinois is terrible in the closing ad, then he never got his message out.

Plus, I do think that it risks backlash by portraying Illinois as such a lousy place.

Comment by the Other Anonymous Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 8:13 pm

  33. A LOT of people think Illinois is a lousy place, thanks to 12 years of dem rule. Get out of your house and talk with people.

Comment by anonano Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 8:16 pm

  34. voted for Edgar in ‘94, still like him. but to repeat OW, Bruce has spent the past year+ bashing career and corrupt politicians, now closing out campaign doing a tour with Gov Edgar? and at same time running another TV ad about the career/corrupt politicians? if that is not a walking contradiction then…

he spent summer trying to win over northern Dems, now last few days heading below I-80 to remind the hard Rs he didn’t really mean it? no one has cable or internet? still rely only on newspaper headlines?

also Crain’s ran an article today about Chicago manufacturing expanding at its fastest rate in over a year, but yeah things are so gloomy and hopeless like this ad.

we have a long way to go, neither guy in this election is perfect for the job, but Bruce has done nothing but contradict himself on almost every issue: taxes, education, budgets, guns, minimum wage, women’s rights, gay rights/gay marriage, and so on. it has been so perplexing to follow, and glad it’s almost over. and he may still win :)

Comment by PoolGuy Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 8:17 pm

  35. I think he’s got the “land without hope” vote already.

Just ask, Louis, huddled with the rest of the teeming masses in Lake Forest.

There’s always been something off-center about a dude who makes $50 million to $60 million a year here telling you the place blows.

Doesnt come off as sincere or authentic, which has been his problem since jump street.

Comment by Wordslinger Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 8:55 pm

  36. It’s okay. He’s pitching the hissy feet stampers on the far right, and it comes across okay. C.

    Comment by Toure's Latte Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 9:04 pm

  37. I watched this 2 more times and if you combine this with the “Diana Close” it’s as though it’s not a closing argument, it’s making an argument that should have been settled.

Being second to “ask”, after 1 close already, too redundant and too “me too”

    Maybe that us the lede;

Rauner chasing Quinn’s message till the end.

Rauner out hustled in the Primary, got out worked in the General(?)

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 9:07 pm

  38. ==“I’m Bruce Rauner and I’ve lost my jacket…”

    – MrJM==

Also, I have lost my ability to pronounce the G’s in words that end with -ing

Comment by Jimmy CrackCorn Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 9:28 pm

  39. Sorry for the redundancy, I didn’t see crazybleedingheart beat me to the joke

Comment by Jimmy CrackCorn Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 9:32 pm

  40. ==It’s not too bad. I think there are considerable voters out there who are really tired of same-old, same-old players in Springfield but have been reluctant to stomach voting for Daddy Warbucks. This one might get him some of those.==

If he’s still trying to win over “some” of those with his last (?) ad, it really makes you wonder what exactly he’s been doing since the spring.

Comment by Arsenal Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 10:16 pm

  41. “While somewhat negative, not as brutal as the $78 baby killing Quinn ad I just saw.”

Where does Rauner’s DCFS ad fall in this scale?

Comment by Adlai Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 11:25 pm

  42. I thought Jim Edgar retired as an active politician in 1998 without retiring from all forms of employment. Is he a career politician even after ending his political career.

Pat Quinn has been in government longer than the retired Edgar.

  43. “Also, I have lost my ability to pronounce the G’s in words that end with -ing”

Who said it first, Barack or Bruce? They both talk this way.

Comment by Under Further Review Saturday, Nov 1, 14 @ 1:26 am

  44. ===Who said it first, Barack or Bruce? ===

So you admit he’s a phony?

    lol

    Just sayin…

Comment by Rich Miller Saturday, Nov 1, 14 @ 1:36 am

  45. Speaking of the President, I found “hope” to be a strange word choice for this ad given its prominence in the Obama campaign rhetoric. To the extent that’s purposeful (and I can’t imagine why it would be because they are so different) I think it’s a bad choice.

I also continue to think Rauner’s demonization of Cullerton and Madigan in ads is counterproductive for his “I will work in a bipartisan fashion” narrative. Bro, who do you think that involves if not those two guys?

Comment by the koala Saturday, Nov 1, 14 @ 9:42 am

  46. “None of us should settle for a state without hope. A future without possibilities.”

    What a crock!

Is that false and bleak portrayal the only way we can justify a vote for Rauner? What about Bruce’s accomplishments? Where are they?

Is that what Bruce Rauner says about Illinois to his investors and partners in GTCR? No hope? No possibilities?

Whoever wrote and believes that line should be slapped back into reality.

At least he faced the camera alone this time.

D- Appeals only to the worst pessimists among us, who are with him already.
