*** UPDATED x1 *** Rauner to speak on budget

Posted in:

* Oh, this ought to be rich

Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner plans to speak about the state budget at a Better Government Association event.

Rauner is scheduled to make the remarks today during a luncheon in Springfield.

The event starts at 11:30 at the Sangamo Club. Rauner hasn’t said much about the budget beyond how it’s worse than anybody thought. And the BGA’s Andy Shaw isn’t exactly known for his state budget acumen. But one of the members of Shaw’s “Springfield advisory council” is Mike Lawrence, who has plenty of experience on the issue. Hopefully, Mike will be able to get a word in edgewise.

* You can watch live coverage of the event via BlueRoomStream, by clicking here. I’ll get a ScribbleLive thingy up and running as well, so check back here.

…Adding… You can also listen live on WMAY and online at the station’s website. Also, BlueRoomStream says there’s poor Internet access at the Sangamo, so it can’t stream the event live.

*** UPDATE *** Yikes. I’m late to the party. Here’s your feed…

  1. ===Hopefully, Mike will be able to get a word in edgewise.==

    Perfect comment.

Little likelihood Shaw or Rauner will do anything but throw spitballs, at this point.

  2. Wonder when he will decide that either the income tax stays at 5% or all those funding promises he made during the campaign will turn into budget cuts instead.

I’m thinking this is still way too early to tip his hand. This will be more wringing of hands over how bad it is, and I didn’t know.

Comment by archimedes Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 9:29 am

  3. Yawn. I don’t expect to hear anything interesting from Rauner or Shaw.

Comment by Norseman Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 9:37 am

  4. This will be a big crowd. Hope they have microphones so we can hear everything.

  5. In the vein of “Mike … edgewise” — the wisest thing they could do is let Mike Lawrence do the talking. He’s one of the sharpest, most common-sense guys around. If the Governor-Elect listened to and took budgetary advice from the likes of Mike, we’d all be better off.

  6. You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet - Bachman Turner Overdrive, enhanced by VanillaMan

I ran for this office, I stole voter’s hearts away
They wanted Springfield shaken, and I wanted it that way
I think that our old governors were rotten
And they took what they could get, mmm
Oooh, oooh, so look into my big blue eyes
    I said:

    You ain’t seen nothin’ yet
With my B-B-B-Budget, no one’s gonna sweat!
I’m going to cut taxes and give a big tax credit
My B-B-B-Budget, will be the best yet!

    I ain’t foolin’ around!

Right now I’m feelin’ shocked, ’cause we’re sure screwed for sure
But now that I’m the governor, I know of a cure!
Any tax cut is a good tax cut!
We’ll cut away this debt, now don’t you even fret
Oh - look into my big blue eyes and listen
    I said:

    You ain’t seen nothin’ yet
With my B-B-B-Budget, there will be no more debt!
I’m going to cut waste and fraud won’t be a threat
My B-B-B-Budget, will be the best ever yet!

    I ain’t foolin’ around!

  7. Let’s see if Rauner pushes to fulfill his tax cut/spending increase stances by proposing deep cuts to state workers’ salaries. I don’t see how he can realistically hold his campaign positions unless there are drastic cuts somewhere. Even with drastic cuts, it might be real hard if not impossible to fix the budget. Will Rauner figure that state workers are the most politically expendable and therefore the easiest to try to cut?

Comment by Grandson of Man Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 10:02 am

  8. Michelle, that’s always good for a belly laugh.

The only revenues Andy is concerned with are the ones he can squeeze out of the utilities, law firms, banks and corporations that feed at the (presumably) better government trough.

  9. Raise revenue, cut staff, cut salaries. Pick the poison you want.

  12. They could replace all the workers with volunteers and it’d do little more than put a small dent in the budget deficit.

Comment by AC Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 10:55 am

  13. i expect nothing beyond doom and gloom. he cant be specific, bec it would trigger a month of unabated backlash and angst from advocacy groups and rebuttals from the administration.

  21. Hey Bruce, here’s a great idea for free — Close the loopholes!

    (hahahahaahahaahaha)

Comment by Soccermom Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 12:32 pm

  22. Tourism, eh? I wonder why no one ever thought of that before.

Google “Chicago, Illinois, break tourism records.” Been going on for a while now.

Apparently, Rauner is able to project his revolutionary ideas back in time, and has made things happen years before he even takes office.

Way to go, chief! That power will come in handy on the budget.

Comment by Wordslinger Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 12:44 pm

  23. Grandson of Man - staff cut from 208 to 54 - all federal money - Soccermom - if he closed all the loopholes where would he have gotton all his $ - we paid all those teacher pernsions for the local school districts for - how many decades was that? State planes are sef indulgent - or a good way to maximise use of time (not including Blago)

Comment by Yatzi Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 12:45 pm

  24. Rauner won’t comment on Topinka replacement, then reiterates his demand Quinn appoint Kimme and his opposition to a special election.

Can we get the tape on that one?

Comment by Juvenal Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 12:55 pm

  25. Self-indulgent? It’s a good six hours from Rockford to Cairo. It’s a stupid waste of time to drive. We don’t need a state fleet of 16 aircraft, but it’s okay to use 21st century transportation technologies.

Comment by Soccermom Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 12:56 pm

  26. Self-indulgent?

Good god, Rauner. You had a *smoking* room in the Sears Tower. Who in the world — who in the world — has their own cigar smoking room?

    Rauner is self-indulgency personified.

Comment by Frenchie Mendoza Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 1:00 pm

  27. ==Gov-elect Rauner said state agencies intentionally low-balled budget numbers.==

That’s just asinine. State agencies provide the numbers. It’s up to the GA and the Governor to do what they will with those numbers.

Comment by Demoralized Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 1:07 pm

  28. Wow… We need to not raise property taxes… But need to deal with the pension issues… I guess no cost shift then right? I need somebody much more bright to help me.. Also, I would suggest no more events to talk about your budget…If you are not going to talk about your budget…just sayin… The honeymoon is now over.

Comment by Walter Mitty Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 1:19 pm

  29. @Walter:

It’s all wrapped up nice with a bow when he says the solution is to “grow the economy.” That makes everything better.

  30. ==Gov-elect Rauner said state agencies intentionally low-balled budget numbers.==

Someone on the GOP side needs to make up their mind.

During the Senate Approp Hearings, GOP members told agencies they were hiding revenue and to make it look worse than it was with their Doomsday Budget.

Now the the new Guy says they low balled the numbers. For the Love of the Pete, pick a lane.

    What does this mean?

  32. He shouldn’t fly or drive. He can Skype back to Chicago when necessary. That’s the 21st century. Or maybe, for Illinois, the 22nd.

Comment by Cassandra Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 1:47 pm

  33. GOV ELECT RAUNER: “I don’t want to hear people talk about minimum-wage. I want our people to blow past minimum wage.”

Rauner is the definition of facile. He can “blow past” answering a question faster than anyone I’ve ever seen.

Comment by Archiesmom Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 1:49 pm

  34. ==when he says the solution *still* is to “grow the economy.” ==

I expect he’ll be delivering this line four years from now as he runs for re-election.

Comment by Aldyth Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 1:56 pm

  37. “He can Skype back to Chicago when necessary.” Don’t even need Skype. The State has already invested a lot of money on video conferencing. There are full-blown video conferencing rooms all over the State.

Comment by Skeptic Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 2:10 pm

  38. Demoralized… We disagree often… But when we agree… Do we really agree…I am sorry…I really do want the best for Rauner because that means our state… But somebody please stop these crazy events to give a plan to say you will have an event to give a plan…

Comment by Walter Mitty Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 2:25 pm

  39. Cassandra — I wasn’t talking about staff meetings. I was talking about things like when tornadoes hit downstate — you don’t really want the Governor to drive 10 hours down and back. And there are often events the Governor needs to attend in person.

Comment by Soccermom Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 2:29 pm

  40. Soccermom, he’ll borrow a private jet from one of his rich buds.

Comment by Norseman Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 2:34 pm

  41. Count me among the minority that doesn’t have a problem with the Governor of a state using whatever means of transportation are available. Because, you know, I want our Governor to waste hours on end driving around the state to get places.

Comment by Demoralized Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 2:34 pm

  42. Really, who needs a plane anyway. Besides, when all you have to do is drive downtown Chicago, what good is a plane anyways.

Perhaps GTCRauner doesn’t know there’s more to Illinois than Chicago?

Comment by How Ironic Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 2:51 pm

  43. From Chicago to Cairo is a long drive. What is your time worth.

Comment by facts are stubborn things Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 3:02 pm

  44. In 2012 dollars, from 2003 through 2008, Illinois GDP grew steadily every year, from $640 billion to $701 billion.

The unemployment rate reached a low of 4.4 percent in 2006.

I guess that Blago was one swell governor, right? Because governors control the economy?

Like every other governor, Rauner has a job to do. It’s just not the one he’s talking about.

Dont believe the hype. And don’t make crazy connections between a state budget and economic growth. They are not related.

Seriously, is that what they taught at Dartmouth and Harvard? That governors, by voicing a lot of buzz words, spark economic growth?

Anyone take a class in college on the relationship between state budgets and economic growth? It’s all nonsense.

You can stop the hard sell, Bruce, you got the job.

Now, you have to do the actual job, not the fictional one from the campaign.

A chief executive, not a messiah.

Comment by Wordslinger Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 4:03 pm

  45. Details still appear vague (what else is new?), but Rauner is now claiming agencies are asking for $760 million more in additional spending to get through this fiscal year. He didn’t specify which ones. Pantagraph story:

Comment by Leatherneck Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 4:56 pm

  46. “grow the economy”

Marijuana legalization is one way to help “grow the economy,” no pun intended. I was imagining how much economic and revenue growth might occur if we properly legalized cannabis and had the huge money spent currently in the black market diverted into the legitimate economy. I don’t see legalization happening but it should be on the table.

Comment by Grandson of Man Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 6:03 pm

  47. All reasonable ideas should be on the table at this point in time, not just buzzwords.

Comment by Jorge Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 6:18 pm

  48. The chair of the Inaugural Committee, the Floor Mat King, to name just one, has a sweet private jet.

Comment by Frequent Flyer Tuesday, Dec 16, 14 @ 8:49 pm

  49. Net impression: Rauner was talking down to the audience in the room. It’s grating.

That’s giving him the proper benefit of the doubt on his actual knowledge.

I am trying to like and respect the man. Wish he’d make it easier.
