  2. My gosh, you are up early this morning! I have an excuse, as I’m currently in the UK, so it is 9:45 here–but for you it is before 5 am! Get some sleep, man! :-)

  3. Petty has some great tunes. Personally I like American Girl and Last Dance with Mary Jane.

  4. Damn the Torpedos was the soundtrack of the summer after I graduated from high school, and is still near the top of my favorite all-time albums list. Thanks for posting the pre-MTV video;-)

Btw- considering what is going to go down today at the supreme court , my wife said two other Petty songs might be appropriate - either “You’re Gonna Get It ” (title track from The Heartbreaker’s 2nd album) , or “I Won’t Back Down”( from his solo Full Moon Fever album). Both titles work for either side of the pension theft bill ;-)

  5. A generation ago, this guy was all over non-satellite radio. If you had a copy of this album on cassette, you could play it in your Walkman.

  6. Appropo on the day after the Blurred Lines/ Got to Give it Up verdict. With all the hubbub about that decision, overlooked was the agreement to give Petty profits for Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me”, which I guess was too derivative of Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down”. My point being that Petty’s songs are so simple but brilliant that it seems impossible to me to write a good rock song without copying off of something that came before it, especially a Petty song.

  8. Nothing like a drum riff to ease your way into the day. I like this song.

  10. Petty is a favorite of mine. My son actually used I Won’t Back Down as his walk up song while he played for the SIU Salukis baseball team. Perfect song for today’s date in court. Thanks for the nice start to the day.

  11. Mike Campbell often goes unmentioned, but is one of the great guitar players of all time. He never wastes a note, and always plays to reinforce the song. Just my two cents.

  12. Love this song

  13. One of the most memorable live sets I’ve seen was Dylan with Tom Petty’s band at Farm Aid in Champaign. They really brought out Electric Rock Star Bob.

Never, before or since, seen Dylan having so much fun on stage, especially when they rolled into “Maggie’s Farm.” There are clips on You Tube.

  14. Nice start to the day. Wildflower’s still my favorite Petty album.

  17. Great song, Rich. No argument. But my personal favorite is “Shadow of a Doubt” from the same LP. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfeEkJGcG0I

  18. Tom Petty any time of the day!

  19. American Girl is the only song he did that is listenable. Even if he sang through his mouth instead of his nose, he would be awful. Typical 70’s songwriter-performer schlock.
