Twenty years ago today, MJ: “I’m back.”

One of the happiest, goofiest days ever downtown.

In the tavern after work, it was like VE day or something. Packed to the gills, people laughing, hugging and glued to the “live coverage” of reaction to a two-word fax.

The El on the way home was the same. Rather than the usual silent, tired, after-work crowd, the whole car was chirping like birds, total strangers from all walks of life just giddy and having to talk about it.
