Good morning!

* Yeah, running a bit late today. Long day, long night. AP

A Grammy-winning polka is closer to becoming the official Illinois polka.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports a House committee OK’d enshrining the Illinois-written “Polka Celebration” along other designations such as the state bird and flower.

The tune was written and composed by Chicago native Eddie Blazonczyk Sr. It won a Grammy Award in 1986.

* It’s actually a pretty good tune

  5. The image of the Crazy Chicken Dance at wedding receptions popped into my head. Even without the suds flowing and Aunt Millie crying about losing her little girl, the “Chicken Dance” beats the “Polka Celebration” hands down. Sorry Eddie.

  7. Ah the great Eddie Blazonczyk and the Versatones. As a student film maker, I did a really horrible documentary on the Polka Hall of Fame in Chicago. Eddie’s name kept coming up.

  8. So I guess The Steve Miller Band’s, Take The Money And Run, didn’t get the votes.

  9. I remember that Grammy telecast. Very controversial.

    When Eddie Blazoncyzk and the Versatones were accepting the award, a young Kanye West stormed the stage, grabbed the mike and said it rightfully belonged to Eddie Korosa and the Boys from Illinois.

    It was a Milwaukee Ave/South Cicero Ave. thing.

  10. APOne, it was actually Eddie Korosa and the Boys from Illinois that played John Candy’s polka band in “Home Alone.”

    Gotta represent for the old Baby Doll Polka Club.

  14. Doesn’t the legislature have a budget mess to fix instead of focusing on this silliness? #snark

  17. With all due respect to the beloved JBT who left us too early, there are no good polkas.

  18. In Streator–where we know something about polkas–this would get a lot of votes. But I don’t like it as much as George Ryan’s “Pay for Play Polka.”

    No Christmas was complete around our home without a couple of spins of Lil’ Wally singing Nuttin’ for Christmas. Think that warped and scratched LP may be around somewhere still…
