An afternoon thought

Posted in:

* After seeing the governor crank up the anti-Madigan spin again today, followed by Senate President Cullerton’s harsh press conference and then Speaker Madigan’s comments comparing Rauner to Blagojevich on Rick Pearson’s show, I can only think of this line from The Godfather

Michael: How bad do you think it’s gonna be?

Clemenza: Pretty [g-d] bad. Probably all the other Families will line up against us. That’s all right. These things gotta happen every five years or so, ten years. Helps to get rid of the bad blood. Been ten years since the last one. You know, you gotta stop them at the beginning.

They’re going to the mattresses and it ain’t gonna be pretty.

  3. From the Twitters…

@AmandaVinicky: Madigan to legislators: House in session continiously all summer, starting Thurs, June 4. No mileage or reimbursements. Be on 48 hr notice.

    To the Mattresses…

  5. The governor just got there — how much bad blood can he have stored up, lol.

It’s clear, though, this is what he wanted.

He didnt run spots during the session to build public support. He went on the milk carton the last two weeks.

Now, when there are possibilities for deals on workers comp and property taxes, and both he and the Dems need about the same amount of money for their budget proposals, Rauner chooses to go nuclear.

His actions show he never wanted a deal.

I’m sure the media campaign will make his hyper-partisans happy. I just don’t see the governmental purpose.

  6. I agree with -word-, there were the makings for a deal on the table … but apparently Rauner didn’t want that.

    On to October …

Have the players figured out yet that there are no winners?

  9. Makings of a fair deal? That’s rich. Rauner says he’ll give up much of agenda. MJM says “you’ll get nothing and like it; soon as you completely cave we can talk.” The Illinois Compact is trying to crush the new guy right out the box, and he hasn’t folded completely just yet. Color me shocked that this irritates many regular posters here!

    Clemenza: Bad… ‘Godfather 3′ bad.

  11. == Makings of a fair deal? ==

Might want to re-read my post. I said there was the making of a deal. I passed no judgment on the fairness of it.

  12. Anyone who has ever been through a successful negotiation knows the one thing you don’t do is require the other side to compromise their principles to get a deal. That only works when you are dictating the terms of surrender.

He’s already paid for what he wants to give them. As you can see from his contract proposals, he’s not into giving his employees any frills.

What will Madigan’s summer sessions accomplish?

  17. Brucie is turning Springfield into DC. Only instead of Repub v. Dem, it’s Rauner v. Dem w/ the Il. GOP Brucie’s hostages…whether by choice is up to them.

    I would beg to differ.
