Circuit Judge Charles H. Constable of Mount Carmel, a Democrat, released four deserters who had been arrested by army sergeants acting on the orders of Colonel Henry H. Carrington, commander of the Indiana Military District.
Constable argued that the army had no authority to arrest deserters from Indiana within the sovereign state of Illinois.
Outraged by the judge’s action, Carrington led a detachment of Indiana cavalry into Marshall, Illinois, in March 1863.
There he arrested Judge Constable, who was then trying the two army sergeants on the charge of kidnapping.
A federal judge ordered Constable’s release on the.grounds that Carrington’s cavalry had no authority to hunt deserters outside of Indiana, thus supporting Constable’s earlier opinion.
The Hoosiers were right.
Maybe we should return the historical favor and liberate Indiana trade unionists.

Indiana’s laissez faire approach to protecting labor is matched by their environmental policies, so let’s be certain we include liberation of their Lake Michigan shoreline as well.

And annex the Dunes area. They share a common time zone with us, as opposed to the rest of Indiana. They also have some of our Chicago World’s Fair buildings. Its our Crimea.

What makes this especially sour for those times was the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. No one in the North cared much for the idea that the black family you met in town last night, could end up being kidnapped by Southerners under the pretense that there were runaway slaves. There was too much abuse. There had been too many free blacks kidnapped by Southern bounty hunters to become slaves. There were too many Southerners making money kidnapping people due to the tone of their skin, claiming they had the right to do so.
So kidnapping people due to some outside group’s claim that the people were fugitives, just wasn’t acceptable to many living in the North. Consequently, the idea that a group of Hoosiers believed they had some kind of jurisdictional powers to cross state lines and take people back with them, made people mad.
The Fugitive Slave Act wrecked the cooperation between states regarding extradition. It was not rare for citizens to use violence against the Southern bounty hunters, and it was repulsive and offensive to see people lose their freedom. By forcing Northerners to deal with the immorality of catching slaves, Northerners were no longer isolated from the effects of slavery. The FSA lasted a decade, and created a decade’s worth of anger which finally ended in 1861.

Better yet, let Illinois open its borders to the displaced Indiana trade unionists. The robust Illinois manufacturing sector GLADLY welcomes those in trade unions, because the growth of manufacturing jobs in Illinois has FAR exceeded the ability of the local labor market to supply, especially with union members. This is, of course, the expected result of the pro-union labor policies coming from Chicago and Springfield (are they actually different?), very fair and generous workman’s comp rules, and the extremely attractive tax and business regulatory environment in Illinois. That’s why Illinois leads the nation in job growth since the Obama depression began.
Add to that the effective and responsible fiscal management policies the voters of Illinois have implemented through their excellent electoral choices, and Illinois NEEDS to build the Illiana tollway just to handle the business exodus into Illinois!
If your snark meter isn’t reading off the scale after reading this, time to bring it into the shop to have a union tech fix it…

Were the deserters Indiana militia or Federal? Even Calhoun would not have argued that Federal troops chasing Federal deserters were stopped by State lines.
Indiana did not invade to capture their legislators when thefled IIndiana to avoid quorum calls. Maybe we have learned something since 1863.

Then as now, Mt. Carmel produced fine minds and men of strong character. *^^*
In fact, in 1861 Gen. Henry Halleck had to instruct his officers (and the Confederates!!) as to military law. He issued orders that the Army would conduct no trials where civil courts were able to work, but would instead enforce their orders.
Seems like Gen Halleck would have had some class time with Col Carrington.

The big problem is that Indiana’s National Guard is appropriated, while our’s currently isn’t, so we may have to hold off till next year.

We can also liberate LGBT people in Indiana and Michigan. Those state governments have an anti-gay bias couched in “religious freedom” with laws such as this:

Boxcar Bob is employing a way of thinking that our new governor has indicated as acceptable. Top public executives such as presidents and governors, top administration officials and dignitaries set tones of conversation which end up being copied by their political supporters.
So when Boxcar Bob calls folks, “bottom feeders”, what he is doing is mimicking what our new governor has already hinted at - that public employees and other experienced government public servants are unworthy of their wages and benefits.
It is the new CEO-as-governor presentation. The latest way to divide citizens. I’ve heard it referred to as “tax payers” and “tax consumers”.
“Entitlement” refers to these tax consumers as holding a government title to unearned largess, taken from the tax payers. If you take more in income from government, than you pay in taxes - the Boxcar Bobs and Rauners of today’s Illinois scene label you as a “tax consumer”. Couple that with the famed Protestant Work Ethic and other traditional views, and you end up with “bottom feeders”.
So, thank you Governor Rauner for enhancing our public dialogs with a new way of dividing each of us into new exciting anti-citizen and highly unproductive camps. Concentrate on that!

Continuing the theme of connecting current events to wars past, and particularly appropriate to the coming holiday:
Honeybear interprets the Springfield circus as a sea battle from the age of tall ships. I thought he might enjoy some stunning images of a replica of Lafayette’s frigate L’Hermione arriving, with a full broadside salute, in New York harbor.
If I don’t miss my mark, you can see a “ghost” of the schooner America, aft of the frigate in the distance, in the first image.
