Call out the National Guard!

* Maybe we should ask the Texas governor for advice on how to deal with this obvious military invasion…

STATEMENT FROM THE CITY OF CHICAGO OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AND COMMUNICATIONS REGARDING TRAINING IN CHICAGO JULY 20-25

The City of Chicago is providing continued support for a routine military training exercise in and around the Chicagoland area over the next week. This routine training is conducted by military personnel in cities across the country, designed to ensure the military’s ability to operate in urban environments overseas, as service members meet mandatory training certification requirements and prepare for upcoming deployments worldwide.

As part of this training, residents can expect to see increased aircraft activity, including helicopter flights. All training activities have been pre-coordinated with federal, state and city officials, and these locations have been carefully selected to minimize the impact on the daily routine of residents.

The training is not open to the public and the sites will be secured to ensure the safety of residents and the participants.

On an unrelated note, I’ve heard the phrase “Chicagoland area” all my life and have always thought it’s redundant. Wouldn’t “Chicagoland” suffice?

Just one of those local tics, I suppose.

  8. Since we’re in the middle of a budget crisis, I say we call in the B-Team.

    Mago (instead of Hannibal)

Murdock (nothing else popped into my head)

They would be the…soldiers of less fortunate?!

  9. Thank you, thank you, thank you for bringing up the “Chicagoland area” thing — one of my long time pet peeves!

I hate the term “Chicagoland” even when it stand alone…ad “area” and it becomes not only annoying, but grammatically dubious as well.

  20. It is good that the City put out an announcement of this. Otherwise, the survivalist/conspiracy theory folks will believe the government is taking over, instituting Marshall law, and trying to confiscate our guns.

Back in the 90’s the UN did some night maneuvers in the Northwest Chicago suburbs, and there were folks who thought this was it - those UN soldiers in the blue helmets are finally taking over the U.S.

  32. Well, that would explain all the helicopters flying back and forth the past few days, probably preparing for the event.. And, no, they’re not black helicopters.

I don’t care for the term Chicagoland. I wish it was reserved for commercial advertising and not used by the news media. We are not part of Chicago!

Comment by Huh? Thursday, Jul 16, 15 @ 4:23 pm

  34. It’s a disambiguation.

They say “CHicagoland area” so as to not confuse you with the theme park Chicagoland.

Its a good QOTD for another day, Rich:

Recommend rides and attractions for the amusement park “Chicagoland.”

Comment by Juvenal Thursday, Jul 16, 15 @ 4:24 pm

  35. Chicagoland area was used in most regional advertising campaigns which include northern Indiana. It was also a catch phrase when referring to the viewing area of the local television stations.

Comment by Cable Line Beer Gardener Thursday, Jul 16, 15 @ 4:27 pm

  36. Col. McCormick coined “Chicagoland.” It covered everywhere the Trib was delivered daily by rail and included Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.

  37. Ducky LaMoor

    Thanks for the history lesson.

Comment by OneMan Thursday, Jul 16, 15 @ 4:38 pm

  38. The Tribune does charge one price for its Chicago and suburbs distribution, a higher price outside of this area. So, I guess that defines the current Chicagoland.

Comment by Ipso Facto Thursday, Jul 16, 15 @ 5:38 pm

  45. To me its always been Chicago for the city proper or Chicago area for a more unspecified area that, at least to me, includes the surrounding counties.

Never thought of or expressed it any other way.

Comment by Federalist Thursday, Jul 16, 15 @ 6:08 pm

  46. I hate “Chicagoland.” It sounds like a mafia themed Disneyland.

Comment by NoGifts Thursday, Jul 16, 15 @ 6:08 pm

  47. You think Obama thawed relations with Cuba just for diplomacy? You think the Iran nuclear deal is only for nukes? You think it’s a coincidence that one country is Islamic and the other communist?

FEMA camps are coming, Patriots, to take away our guns and religion, and to turn us gay and put us in work camps to support lazy welfare recipients. You think it’s a coincidence that the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Obamacare and gay marriage? Nope. Roberts and Kennedy are demonic Obummer agents. RIP America 1776-2015.

Comment by Grandson of Man Thursday, Jul 16, 15 @ 6:50 pm

  48. Oh no … the helicopters are black … the aliens did something to my brain that lets me see the true color of the helicopters … a guy is walking up my driveway … if I crouch down real low maybe they won’t see me and go away, I got the lights out … he got out of a black van that everybody else thinks is white … but I can see the true color of the van …

GOM - I get a kick out of your post. I went off one end of the pool and you went off the other. We both hit our heads on the bottom of a very shallow pool.

  49. Contest: What’s the greatest Chicagoland area?

Comment by Bystander Thursday, Jul 16, 15 @ 7:27 pm

  50. Rich, Chicagoland would seem to define Chicago and a couple of counties. Maybe all the collar counties. “Greater” down to Lasalle, Pontiac? I dunno, but if they get to my front door, I’ll post here and FB my take down. . . .

leave a thread open for me this weekend

  51. How is Chuck Norris going to save Texas and Illinois at the same time?

Comment by Streator Curmudgeon Thursday, Jul 16, 15 @ 7:41 pm

  52. Seems like a lot of folks here don’t get this “Chicagoland” concept. Chicagoland is the equivelant of saying Chicago area, so there’s no reason to say “Chicagoland area.”

Comment by Robert Thursday, Jul 16, 15 @ 8:37 pm

  53. Pfft. I’m still waiting for the Governor of Texas to decide whether its President Odumbo who gets made a fool of by every foreign power in the world, or Barack Hussein Obama who is the mastermind behind a secret plot to launch a federal takeover of the entire American southwest.

    FICTIONAL NARRATIVE CONSISTENCY PLEASE

    Comment by Lester Holt's Mustache Thursday, Jul 16, 15 @ 9:18 pm

  54. Chicago = everything south of Touhy, north of 138th, west of IN state line, and east of Harlem, roughly.

    Chicagoland - Cook + collars

Greater Chicagoland = above, plus Kendall County, Kenosha WI area and north Lake County IN. La Salle and Pontiac have no business being in Greater Chicagoland, you have to draw the line somewhere.

And speaking of pet name peeves, “Southland” sounds like a place that would have a rebel flag controversy, not the Chicago south suburbs.

Comment by Six Degrees of Separation Thursday, Jul 16, 15 @ 11:18 pm

  55. On my way to Chicagolandi

Comment by El Chapo Friday, Jul 17, 15 @ 12:01 am

  56. How about Metropolitan Chicago? See Wikipedia for several versions of Chicagoland, a couple of which are defined by the Census Bureau:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_metropolitan_area

@Wensicia: Yes, the rest of the area is not legally Chicago, but the region has a shared culture, environment, and economy. We’d be much better served by stronger regional governance (See Toronto for an example [but ignore that mayor]).

    Comment by FP_J Friday, Jul 17, 15 @ 8:38 am

  57. This sounds like a job for the Illinois Naval Militia.
