Madigan’s snarky retort

Posted in:

* During his press conference yesterday, Speaker Madigan accidentally knocked off his microphone’s wind cover, repeatedly teased me for looking tired (the firefighters threw a great impromptu party the night before) and skipped his usual opening speech about “acting in moderation, not in the extreme.” But he did get off some pretty good zingers. For example

Jordan Abudayyeh: “Governor Rauner is handing out pink slips to 171 workers. Is this going to increase the pressure to get a budget done so that more people don’t lose their jobs?”

Mike Madigan: “Why is he doing that?”

Jordan Abudayyeh: “He claims there’s not money, that’s how he’s going to manage the budget deficit.”

Mike Madigan: “Is he going to not pay those high price consultants he’s outsourcing?”

Take that, Goldberg.

Smooches.

  1. Wait, If he lays himself off, then the high price consultants wouldn’t be needed. Layoff Goldberg, Schrimpf, and ck and we’re talkin’ real savings then.

  2. Hehehe really made me chuckle but it’s a sign that MJM is losing patience.

  3. Illinois Speaker stooping to Goldberg’s level. Classy.

  4. Are there any laws or court decisions which allow high priced consultants to be paid, when there is no budget approved authorizing consultant fees? Those aren’t employee salaries, so shouldn’t they have to wait to be paid like all other vendors?

  5. Madigan should remember the press is not his friend and never will be. That ship sailed long ago. Better to keep his banter to himself, and push forward behind the scene as usual.

His overreaction to mailers in his district, linking them to a Rahm ally, showed weakness, not strength. That one would be better handled by one of his many loyal associates.

Brownie might be good, but open PR just isn’t Madigan’s preferred battlefield.

  6. Madigan is wealthy. He can easily afford to forego a salary himself. Lead by example, Mr Snarky Pants.

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 12:57 pm

  7. That’s what you consider an example of a good zinger?

  8. It is a sign that he believes he is winning.

  9. ===linking them to a Rahm ally===

He didn’t do that. He linked Goldner to Rauner.

  10. == That’s what you consider an example of a good zinger? ==

For Madigan, who says very little most the time, it is.

Comment by RNUG Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 1:03 pm

  11. Actually, I think Rauner would stiff those high paid consultants and blame it on Madigan.

Comment by Former Teacher Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 1:06 pm

  12. I will be honest. Madigan is not my rep, and I didn’t pay all that much attention before Blago - but I’m liking Mr. Madigan!

Just curious - what happens when Mr. Madigan loses patience?

  13. Madigan and the snarks he controls…

    Other than that…

The goal is to link Rauner to the ILGO Crew. Publicly. It’s to put on notice, “we’re watching”, not “you hurt my feelings”. It’s about Rauner trying to make Blago’s dream come true. That… was the point.

    To the snark,

It’s fun. “Why”, The Governor of the state of Illinois, publicly, again, he has no clue that he “owns” his own decisions, so might as well tweak those Superstars Rauner is choosing to pay.

It’s one line. A throwaway. It’s pithy and pointed. Fun.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 1:09 pm

  15. Wow, I’m not sure if my brain can handle this. Mike Madigan should be on those comedy central roasts with material like that!

Comment by Caffeine Free Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 1:10 pm

  16. Things are slow if this so-called snark gets a post.

Comment by William Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 1:12 pm

  17. Yeah, I can see the headline: See Madigan DESTROY Rauner!! *eye roll*

Comment by Yobogoya Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 1:13 pm

  18. Madigan is cool.

Comment by Frenchie Mendoza Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 1:15 pm

  19. Might be something else in play here. Maybe the precursor to accusations of illegal “coordination” between Rauner’s crew and independent expenditure committees.

Comment by Michael Westen Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 1:15 pm

  20. I didn’t think Madigan overreacted to the mailers. I do think he threw the link out there and pretty much threw a challenge out to the media to take it further. I enjoyed the zinger. I think he still has some reserve patience he can call on, you cannot underestimate his patience.

  23. If Dangerfield were still alive, he wouldn’t have to worry from this guy.

Comment by Streator Curmudgeon Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 1:33 pm

  24. Great line by the Speaker. To equate this pithy response to a question to multiple disrespectful letters by a frat boy is ridiculous.

Comment by Norseman Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 1:37 pm

  25. The important element of the Speaker’s response to the question is why is Rauner doing layoffs. Rauner needs to be pressed on why given the court ordered version of a continuing approp, he needs to layoff staff.

Comment by Norseman Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 1:38 pm

  30. ==Rauner needs to be pressed on why given the court ordered version of a continuing approp, he needs to layoff staff.==

Since there’s no budget it’s his way of “negotiating” the budget. Reduce costs via layoffs, you are setting the budgets at the level you want them to be at for that department de facto.

Comment by Demoralized Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 2:02 pm

  31. Speaker Madigan remains firmly in control.
    Good retort Mr. Speaker!

    “Isn’t Rauner being a hypocrite?”

Comment by Austin Blvd Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 2:53 pm

  33. This might be a sign of something from the Speaker, but I’m not sure it’s strength.

When a guy acts outside of his normal self, it might pay to look a little more deeply. This is odd for him. Very odd.

    Comment by A guy Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 3:50 pm

  34. - A Guy -,

Use your words, why is it not a sign of strength?

    It’s one line…

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 3:55 pm

  35. Willy, compare and contrast. Isn’t this a bit too cute for a guy who doesn’t do “cute”? It’s unusual enough to be very odd.

It’s worth paying attention to and following a little closer.

    Is that enough words?

    Comment by A guy Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 4:16 pm

  36. - A Guy -,

I think the last time I can recall some snark with the Speaker was when Rod was around… since we’re comparing and all…

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 4:31 pm

  37. waiting for speaker snark about the years he raided union pension funds for other than what it was designated for ? and when will the any union leader tell the truth that they accepted those diversions while giving the Dem leadership thousands of PAC funds !?? now that will be hilarious snark!! or not !

Comment by railrat Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 5:03 pm

  38. -railrat-

    Bingo!

Comment by Macoupin Minority Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 6:49 pm

  39. This is unusual behavior for Madigan. Maybe he is sensitive after losing to Rauner on the pay increase.

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 6:51 pm

  40. The Speaker has been at this game a long time so believe me when I say he knows what he’s doing
