  1. If you play it backwards, all you can hear is “Madigan is responsible. I have no responsiblity. Madigan is in control. Unions are bad.”

Comment by How Ironic Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 3:31 pm

  2. If you attempt to play it on an Android phone, you hear nothing, but strangely it may still contain all the actual content from the press conference.

  3. ===If you play it backwards===

    Backwards?

    He says that forwards.

    lol

  5. @ Rich Miller,

The younger kids may not appreciate the old ‘playing the record backwards’ subliminal message bit…(or am I showing my age)?

  6. “In private, the conversations are constructive, in public, it’s not constructive.”

    Is this an admission?

  9. Even though I whined about Madigan joining the press conference circuit — head to head with Rauner he does okay.

  12. We used to wind the cassette tape so it would go through the player backwards. Stairway To Heaven sounds particularly creepy when played in reverse.

  16. So the Governor says the same thing he said yesterday only in a more pleasant way. He still opposes SB 18 as it is currently drafted and will presumably veto the bill if it passes the House.

Governor Rauner also has said CPS needs to file chapter 9 because it is in too deep. So isn’t all this crying about helping CPS from what he has said openly before putting money into a system that is heading into collapse?

The Governor is full of massive contradictions in relation to CPS. Just making CTU members hand over the 7% payment to the CTPF will only save CPS $125 million a year or so, in no way does CPS get out of the woods with that. Picking up the normal pension costs for CPS gets the district about another $220 million. Even with both of these cost changes that adds up to about $345 million with CPS facing next year about $660 million in pension costs.

Governor Rauner because of his ideology can’t say what else needs to be done in the City and that is increasing the property tax rate for schools above PTELL. Governor Rauner can’t say how he will get more money to poor schools, because then he has to say taxes. He can say it will be fixed by the booming economy of Illinois that is just in his sight.

By the way did you all notice his shot taken at Governor Chris Christie via trashing New Jersey? What was that all about, what was it Regan said - Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican.

Comment by Rod Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 4:26 pm

  17. At some point, it’s just fun to listen to. Don’t listen to glean anything, or find out things, just listen. Rauner does have a voice for radio… It soothes.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 4:27 pm

  18. Sorry meant SB 318

Comment by Rod Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 4:28 pm

  19. Hilarious that Gov doesn’t want other things added to bills. He could get some of what he wants if he would stop adding his harm the unions junk to bills.

Comment by Fan Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 4:28 pm

  20. Thanks very much for the summary, Rod!

Comment by IllinoisBoi Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 4:39 pm

  21. Rauner must love to hear himself talk. Too bad as he obviously doesn’t understand the concept that when you’re talking you’re not learning.

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 4:49 pm

  22. It’s not about busting unions. It’s just about local control. So localities can bust unions.

Comment by Albany Park Patriot Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 4:51 pm

  23. As I listened, the vision of Rauner plugging into his GPS where he wanted to go, and the GPS replying,” Recalculating, recalculating, recalculating,” kept running through my mind.

Stringing together sound bites and trying to tie Madigan up with them, is really getting old.

    Comment by Anon221 Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 4:51 pm

  24. Rod at 4:26: doesn’t CPS need statutory authorization from the state to use bankruptcy?

Comment by JackD Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 4:51 pm

  25. The Dems should articulate the need for revenue and pass a progressive income tax increase (or the millionaire’s tax) to offset the budget shortfall and fund social services. Send that to the governor. Let him veto it if he wants. Then we’ll know where he stands, and how he really feels about helping the needy as he always talks about. I know Rep. Frank isn’t on board, but so what? If he wants to join Rauner by hurting the elderly, the sick, the disabled, the college students, single mothers, hungry children, etc., he can. It’s worth a shot.

  26. === Scott Fornek ‏@sfornek 1h1 hour ago Gov. Rauner on Mike Madigan: Blah, blah, blah. Madigan response: Blah, blah, blah. AFSCME & IPI: Blah, blah, blah. Consider yourself updated ===

Pretty much sums it up. Sigh.

Comment by Norseman Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 5:02 pm

  27. Madigan won’t give me his cell phone number! WAAAAA! LOL

I call on President Cullerton to talk some sense into that mean nasty Madigan….

“In public its not….” Hello have you met your staff?

  28. ===The Dems should articulate the need for revenue and pass a progressive income tax increase (or the millionaire’s tax) to offset the budget shortfall and fund social services.===

Yeah, um, that pesky Constitution might be a bit tough to make that happen.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 6:23 pm

  29. OW - I’vev been thinking about that pesky Constitution and it requires a flat income tax… Just as they played with the Corporare income tax adding that little thingy called the replacement tax… Why can’t we have an excessive income tax for millionaires? And why don’t we have an equitable income tax @ 6.2 percent for wages in excess of $118,500- the current maximum wage subject to FICA? We can even tax their employers another 6.2 percent… I think there are many ways around the flat tax. Of course we should tie it to FICA and be willing to lose it if the Federal wage cap is ever removed.

Comment by Triple fat Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 6:51 pm

  30. Better yet, we’ll call it the Equitible Wage Tax. I like the sound of that one.

  32. As with most masters of communicating to the (m)asses, he smoothly covers his intentions with milk and honey. Who could be against such paternal intentions? What horrible person could oppose jobs for everyone? I would like to hear him, or preferably Godlberg actually read one the actual proposed bills. I Have a Dream they are not.

Comment by Norm DaPlume Thursday, Aug 6, 15 @ 11:04 pm

  33. Yes - JackD - for CPS to file chapter 9 it would require legislation we have discussed this before on this blog. The Governor supports legislation to allow for such filings.

  34. When can we recall this guy?

Comment by Fed up with Rauner Friday, Aug 7, 15 @ 7:44 am

  35. Time IS of the essence. No question about that. And here’s how Gov. Rauner can get Illinois out of the mess it’s in now. Overnight!!
