Condition update

Posted in:

* My doctor told me yesterday it was OK to attend session from here on out. I’m running a bit late to the Statehouse today, however, because I’ve had two visits from nurses today, both of whom I let go with my doc’s blessing.

I’m not allowed to drive for about four more weeks, and I did get pretty tired after my mom and I were out doing errands for about 6 hours yesterday. I still have my limits, but I’m starting cardio rehab in a few days.

* Also, the doc nixed my idea to attend the Lockin’ festival next month. All the surviving “core four” Grateful Dead members are playing separately, so I’m figuring we could see another reunion. He sympathized, but said I just couldn’t go.

Bummer.

  3. Glad you are improving at a steady clip. More glad you’re listening to the doctor. Giving the nurses the pink slip had to eat you up a little. lol. Nothing else matters if you’re not up to snuff. Keep up the great recovery.

  4. Six hours of errands! Heart nothing, your head could explode!

Comment by Wordslinger Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 12:55 pm

  5. ===Six hours of errands!===

    LOL

Yeah. I thought my Doctor’s appointment was at 11:30. It was actually at 2:40, so we stayed in town, did some shopping (bought some new shoes), had lunch, went to the boat store, bought a painting from Bill Crook and pretty much just ran all over the place.

Whew, I was tired when we got home.

Comment by Rich Miller Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 12:59 pm

  6. Rich, are you sure attending session is okay for your heart?!

Comment by Team Sleep Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 1:00 pm

  7. Glad to read you’re doing better. :-)

Comment by thunderspirit Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 1:05 pm

  8. Did you tell the doc, not to worry, Jerry is in charge here? Although on second thought cardio care maybe is not one of his core strengths. (Foolish heart?)

Comment by Grateful Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 1:09 pm

  9. I’m not sure I could attend session without having a heart attack! Take care of yourself, please, and keep doing what your doctor tells you. Music is forever - and we want you around a long time to enjoy it.

Comment by Archiesmom Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 1:10 pm

  10. Thanks for letting your readers know that you’re on the road to recovery. Best wishes.

Comment by phocion Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 1:12 pm

  11. Rich, I’m glad you caught it when you did. It always bugs me when I hear someone say “I had shortness of breath, and a shooting pain in my arm. I went to the doctor and he told me my arteries were 99% blocked.” My response is why couldn’t your doctor tell you when they were maybe 60% blocked, so you wouldn’t have had to risk the widowmaker. Employ that test much sooner. Jeez!

Comment by PublicServant Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 1:14 pm

  12. Take all the time you need Rich, don’t think anyone is going anywhere soon.

Comment by Give Me A Break Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 1:22 pm

  13. It sucks you have to miss “the Lockin’ festival” next month. Check with the Grateful Dead folks about ordering a tape of the festival. Happy to hear you have been released from the doctor and getting stronger.

Comment by Mama Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 1:24 pm

  14. Great (overall) news!

What was all that I heard about the Grateful Dead’s “last concert?” Reunion already?

Comment by lake county democrat Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 1:35 pm

  15. If I were your Doctor, I’d have nixed the errands and gave my approval to attend the music festival. Glad to hear you continue to be on the mend!

Comment by AC Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 1:40 pm

  16. === (bought some new shoes),===

Hope they’re sensible with thick soles and velcro fasteners (read: ugly) and not those platformed types the long-haired hippie kids are wearing to those concerts. lol

  17. Your health is the only important thing right now.

Comment by Enviro Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 1:47 pm

  18. Cardio rehab is awesome. You’ll hate it the first couple of weeks, but will learn to love it.

It’s better than alcohol, and that is saying something!

Comment by Just Me Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 1:48 pm

  19. Easy does it! I hope you are 110% soon.

Comment by DuPage Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 1:55 pm

  20. Rich, what did you name your bear?

I was at FTW 7/5 in the section above Rauner. Not going to Lockn, too old for the multi-day fests. Will try to see the Dead & Co in LA on New Year’s Eve. That should be a hoot.

Comment by Joe from Joliet Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 2:01 pm

  21. Rich, yes indeed your health is the only important thing right now. You are way too important to so many of us to put it at risk! Stay cool and calm–the fighting will continue without you and you can pick it back up (sadly probably in exactly the same place) when you are ready!

Comment by ABigFan Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 2:02 pm

  22. Been away and missed this news about your heart condition. Great to see your doing better and on the mend. Did you have a bypass or stents ? Keep up the rehab it did wonders for me

  23. “Yes, mister miller it’s okay for you to attend session. Bill Black is not there anymore”

Comment by siriusly Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 2:14 pm

  24. Get over it, hon.
The Grateful Dead have “dead” in their name.
    You don’t.
Keep the grateful. And listen to your doc.

  25. “the doc nixed my idea to attend the Lockin’ festival next month”

That’s just your doctor’s way of saying you should come up to Chicago for Riot Fest that weekend. Iggy Pop, Bootsy Collins and Merle Haggard all perform on Saturday. I’ll buy you a big bottle of water and some veggie kebabs from the pita truck!

  26. Take it easy, Rich, and try not to overdo it. Glad to hear you’re on the mend and will keep you in my prayers.

    Comment by Anonymous 88 Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 2:31 pm

  27. Does your doctor have any clue what “attending session” really means? If you care, which you do, the stress is high. Be your own best judge when to step out for a bit.

    No shortcuts in rehab.

    Best of luck.

Comment by walker Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 2:33 pm

  28. Don’t be stupid. You are not superman. Be kind to yourself now and you will mend more strongly in the long run. And we want you here for long haul.

  29. Glad to learn you are doing better. Don’t short change the cardio rehab which I assume is 3 months.

  30. This wasn’t part of the shake-up agenda, was it?

  31. Just recently celebrated the 7 th anniversary of my triple by-pass surgery Rich. I had the surgery at 48 years of age. I miss the daily pack of Winstons once in a great while, other then that life is very good! Follow the doctors advice and don’t rush the recovery and hopefully you enjoy the same results I have had.

Comment by Skid Lid Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 3:28 pm

  32. Please do what the doctor tells you. We can’t let OW run amok when you are gone. It takes a village just to keep him focused on an issue.

Comment by VanillaMan Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 3:33 pm

  33. Glad to see you’re on the path of recovery and wish you the speediest healing. This “stuff” that we deal with on a daily basis, and that stresses us out, will be here in some form or another long after we’re all gone.

Comment by Grandson of Man Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 3:37 pm

  34. you gotta find your pace. and it’s not easy. had a few surgeries and just when you’re feeling great, you give a rethink to moving faster. take it easy!

  35. My Dad had a quad bypass 26 years ago, and he just turned 93.

Follow the Doctors orders, as hard and as trying as they might seem at the times. Know that they have your best interest in mind.

All of us are pulling for you and the time when you can have one or two cold ones again - in moderation of course!

  40. Rich, getting a little tired after 6 hours shopping two weeks post surgery sounds like your recovery is well under way.

I found the Cardio-Rehab sessions very helpful in my recovery.

Best wishes for your continued recovery.

Comment by Slippin' Jimmy Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 5:05 pm

  41. Just take it easy and listen to your body. Only you know your limits. Oscar needs his Dad, and he will also help you heal as only our four legged kids can.

  42. Get well man, we need ya. If they’re playin’ now, they’ll be playin again.

  43. What wonderful news that your rehab will be starting so soon!!! It will be invaluable, and can–unexpectedly–help develop the habit of daily exercise. At my own recently completed 12 weeks of rehab, we were shown this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUaInS6HIGo

I think it should be required viewing for everyone on earth.

It’s so great you’re doing well and back informing and leading us so soon! Please don’t forget for a moment how many utterly depend upon you.

  44. Glad to hear you’re progressing well. Buying boat stuff is a very good sign.

Comment by Arthur Andersen Tuesday, Aug 25, 15 @ 6:38 pm

  45. AA, what’s the best day in your life except for the day you buy a boat?

The day you sell the boat.

  47. Glad you are progressing. Follow doctor’s orders, and take care of yourself. We need you!

  48. I suspect one of the biggest reasons you’re healing so nicely is that Judy ain’t ready for you to be her house guest again for quite a while. I’m sure she’s looking out for you and willing to wait a long time to give you her next quote.
