Another hostage

Posted in:

* The worst thing about developments like this one is that we’re not talking GRF money here. This fund is an innocent bystander

On Oct. 31, the Southern Illinois Criminal Justice Training Program will run out of cash, said Director Mike Norrington. Seventy-five percent of the funding for the Carbondale-based training program comes from surcharges on traffic tickets. Like so many other funding streams, the cash isn’t available without a budget.

The Criminal Justice program provides much-needed training and certification – often state mandated – to 163 agencies within a 27-county swath, officials said.

  1. Just another reason for those in southern Illinois to think that their vote for Rauner was a mistake. And the hits just keep on comin”. Stay tuned, more to come, right Brucie?

  2. Well, it’s a bystander. I’m against this whole idea of paying for barely-related or unrelated things with surcharges on traffic or criminal proceedings.

  3. What are they talking in terms of how much the
    shortfall will be?

  4. I have some personal knowledge of this program, and it certainly is a well run and worth while program. It provides testing and training for numerous police departments, and is part of the basic role that government is supposed to play in our society. At this point, I am not sure how this current situation is any better then what we had under Rod / Quinn.

  5. There are many programs and some agencies that are funded by other funds. The funds are available now. There are no cash issues. At least release those funds. The fact that they haven’t is just more proof that this is one big giant game.

What are you talking about? How is it unrelated?

How would you prefer to pay for police training?

Don’t get a parking ticket and you don’t have to pay for it at all. Sheesh.

  8. What’d be nice is if Rauner would offer up some projected numbers to show folks how this pain will pay off in the long run.

  9. All part of the plan, as hard as that is for some to believe.

  10. If these casualties don’t break your heart to both the victims and the lack of respect to the office of the Governor, then the vocation of serving others, and even the politics to serving then your cold heart is there with Bruce Rauner.

The foundation and the vocation of governing and government is cruming before our very eyes…

I strongly suspect that’s perceived as a feature, not a bug, at 410 E Jackson Street in Springfield.

Frenchie, I don’t think they have the numbers. He knows the voters will NOT like what he plans to do to IL. Rauner’s supers releasing any data on their end game will happen when hell freezes over.

Anonymous, do you live in IL? Do you not care about people’s means to support themselves?

  17. As a retiree of ISP who taught classes for, attended classes and served on the board of the Southern Illinois Criminal Justice Training Program I am ashamed by this consequence (intended) by the political class.

  18. I wonder what the impacts to a court case will be when it comes out that the arresting officer does not have the training or certification necessary for the case.

  19. Another example of the Governor’s irresponsibility.

  20. I’m sure the governor will spin this as Madigan’s fault.

Comment by Mama Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 11:07 am

  21. The governor has already been chastised by the Fraternal Order of Police. Even the threat of defunding necessary training is likely to solidify street coppers and law enforcement brass into a united front.

The law enforcement community is already picking up hints that the governor believes their welfare is acceptable collateral damage for his extreme agenda. If, like other public sector employees, police further sense that the governor thinks that they’re part of The Problem, this will reinforce their cohesion as a united opposition.

  22. Maybe this is where the first cooperation will be. A pass through bill for programs like this linked to their $ sources?
