  1. Roskam ending his buy with a negative? He must be worried.

  2. I doubt that is his very last commercial.

  3. When this is all said and done could someone tally the cost of each vote for these four candidates?

  4. Roskam must be looking at some bad polls. Not only is he closing negative, he’s resorting to lies. Does anyone seriously believe Duckworth–or any other Democrat for that matter–supports “cutting” Social Security?

  5. What a weird ad by Melissa Bean. I guess I get the point they’re trying to make–that she’s reflective of the values of the district–but it’s too subtle and weird for a lot of voters to pick up on. I think most folks will just think it’s bizaare.

  6. Melissa Bean’s ad worked for me. Roskam’s ad should - should put the nail in his coffin - but Maj. Duckworth’s ad does her very little good.

  7. I’m sympathetic with Duckworth (at least, I think she’s been completely maligned and is probably the least culpable in this race). But this latest DCCC ad goes over the line:

Never, ever, ever use the “extremist” card in political advertising. If I were to agree with any of the positions that Roskam was attacked for, how am I supposed to feel when my (hopeful) Congresswoman (or her DCCC friends) have gone on public record calling my deeply held views “too extreme”?

It’s one thing to say they’re wrong; that’s a matter for political debate. But to write them off as extremist?

I thought Roskam’s people were the only losers in this race. Can I vote for an illegal immigrant instead?

  8. I like the Bean ad. something to be said for a little creativity and not having everything look like an Olsen Rug commercial. pretty effective.

  9. “I thought Roskam’s people were the only losers in this race. Can I vote for an illegal immigrant instead? ”

Boy, how about it? I’d go Vegan if Roskam were a pig farmer.

  10. DCCC went way over the line. In some polls they have Rosakm up by one then down by one. The area I live in has seen support for Roskam increase. I’m only guessing that the conservatives are coming out more and more for Roskam. In the past few weeks, Duckworth seemed to be in front, but I would say that Roskam is leading, not by much. This is just observation, listening to people talk, letters to the editors, etc. Nothing scientific. My comment doesn’t mean DUckworh will lose, its just there has been more Roskam activity now, then the past few weeks.

  11. Bean’s closer is very effective and gets high marks for going unconventional without being plain weird — see Roskam and Speedo.

Rich, maybe you are privvy to the polling which tells us people in the affluent northwest suburbs of Chicago are actually afraid that illegal immigrants are about to take over the Range Rover dealerships and all the good tee times. I’m willing to bet a lot of the small businesses run by the conservative base Roskam feeds this red meat actaully depend more on immigrant, low-wage workers, both legal and illegal, than they would ever imagine.

Why are they so hated? For every illegal with a criminal record or who is a drain on public resources, there have to be hundreds who are working their second and third jobs, sending money home to relatives, and who would love nothing more than to be an American citizen. We whould help them accomplish that rather than turning them into the latest scapegoats.

  13. Impressive, the Duckworth-Roskam race is getting international BBC coverage:

  14. I thought the Bean ad was a little weird, having all those facces/voices saying “I’m Melissa Bean.” Other than that quibble, a nice positive ad. Roskam/Duckworth just keeps getting worse.

  15. I have a question for Duckworth’s folks. They were posturing saying that Roskam should give money back to McCain since they disagree on a singular (at least) issue. They then say he would be a rubber stamp for the GOP. Since Bush supports the amnesty/immigration plan of McCain largely, does that make Roskam not a rubber stamp?

  16. Bean has it, Duckworth doesn’t.

Comment by VanillaMan Thursday, Nov 2, 06 @ 10:00 am

  17. I am sure I am in the minority on this, but I think the Bean ad was one of the worst I have seen.

If all those people are Melissa Bean, then who is Spartacus?
