Facing the music

Posted in:

* From the Queens, NY Times Newsweekly

Before the NLCS started, [New York State Sen. Joseph Addabbo] and his fellow Queens senators agreed to the wager with Illinois Senate President John Cullerton and his colleagues. Should the Mets win, the Illinois Senate will ship deep-dish Chicago-style pizza to the Queens senators; should the Cubs prevail, the Queens senators will send to the Illinois Senate thin-crust New Yorkstyle pizza.

The losing delegation must also congratulate the winning team on the floor of its Senate chambers, and the senators must wear the winning team’s apparel during a cleanup day within their districts. […]

“I hope that Senator Cullerton looks good in blue and orange, and I wish our counterparts in Chicago the best of luck in coming up with a creative way to keep the deep-dish pizza warm while on its way to Queens,” [said Addabbo].

Wrigley Field is in Cullerton’s district, but he’s more of a Sox fan. Still, that isn’t gonna be fun.

Whatever Addabbo. We’ll get to it right after we pay the butter cow lady.

If you don’t get the joke, the as of yet unpaid Illinois State Fair “butter cow lady” lives in New York.

  1. I’d have the cleanup day in January, and wear a snowsuit over it.

  2. If they really wanted to send warm pizza, they could prob enlist the help of the airlines. Better to send frozen pizza.

The uniformed public shaming gonna be painful

  3. Blue and Orange? People will think he’s in Bears garb!

In a way, the sweep makes it easier - listening to sports talkradio today there wasn’t a ton of bitterness about the series, just a deserved tip of the hat to the Mets pitching.

  4. The Cubs don’t need a cleanup day - they just got swept.

    (just kidding Cub fans)

  5. If I were from New York, I’d tell Cullerton he can keep his deep-dish pizza and send Garrett’s popcorn instead. Thin crust pizza beats Chicago-style, hands down, in my opinion. :)

  6. Cullerton has a pretty good sense of humor and can be self-deprecating. He’ll be fine.

  8. For those who think Springfield has a unique corruption of culture, check out Albany sometime. A truly bi-partisan tradition of bamboozlers, hustlers and schemers.

  9. Last night was really painful to watch. I wound up turning the TV off and just going to bed. I must admit, the Mets were at their best and played really well, but the Cubs were just tired. They took it far enough to beat the Cardinals in their first EVER post-season series, and that’s good enough for me! It was a good run, and I’ll say what I say every year: ” At least have next year!”

  10. Terrible wager for the Illinois delegation. Win and you have to force down New York style pizza? How is that a win at all??

Comment by BigDoggie Thursday, Oct 22, 15 @ 9:46 am

  11. They should have wagered White Sox and Yankees tix for 2016 so someone would care.

Comment by Michelle Flaherty Thursday, Oct 22, 15 @ 9:51 am

  12. The Cubs looked tired because they were tired–from all their silly “celebrations” after winning nothing but the right to keep playing. It was unbelievable watching those “celebrations.” Can you imagine for a moment the Hawks “celebrating” the way the Cubs did after winning a quarterfinal playoff series? Sheesh!

  13. For over a century, it has not been smart to bet on the Chicago Cubs to win something.

Comment by VanillaMan Thursday, Oct 22, 15 @ 10:04 am

  14. As a life-long Cubs fan I can say it was a good year. The team exceeded expectations and they simply ran into a buzzsaw in the Mets. I’m disappointed the Cubs didn’t make a better showing but not completely bummed out like I was in 2003. Oh, and I just realized I’ll have to change my moniker for next season!

  16. Well at least this time they were hoping a Chicago politician would don a pinstripe suit that wasn’t government issued.

  17. The Cubs beat my Cards pretty badly. The Mets beat the Cubs pretty badly. My support for the Cubs for 2015 is now completed….

  18. =Back to the Future narrative gone….check……=

More like “Bleech to the Future”. We went from “We Believe!” to “We Bereave!” in the first inning!

    Comment by Colin O'Scopey Thursday, Oct 22, 15 @ 10:45 am

  19. Why do we keep wagering deep-dish pizza with other cities?IMO, it sucks, and no real Chicagoians eat it anyways…

Comment by Jockey Thursday, Oct 22, 15 @ 10:55 am

  20. @ Jockey….um, yes! this year there will be a large celebration of New Year’s Eve in Chicago. in my opinion, in the spirit of the crab drop in Eastern Maryland, Chicago should have a deep dish pizza drop each year. bonus, sponsor of the pizza ($$ given) could rotate each year! Uno Due Lou Malnati……mmmmmmm

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 22, 15 @ 11:32 am

  21. I was not really discouraged by the Cubs dismal performance in the NLCS. The lack of depth in the Cubs roster of starting pitchers was bound to show up during the postseason. It took until the NLCS to rear its ugly head. The team needs to add arms in addition to Arrieta and Lester.

Face it, New York played great baseball (particularly Grandeson and Murphy who was golfing low pitches for home runs).
