Sneed is told Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Gov. Bruce Rauner, two business buddies who have spent family holidays together, are brawling over the state budget, according to two sources.
“The relationship is seriously frayed,” said a source familiar with the fracas – but who asked to remain anonymous.
Like two cats from Kilkenny, the two pals are battling over King Rauner’s purported fiscal “turnaround” agenda for the state which is giving Rahm, faced with empty city coffers, a serious case of nerves.
Sneed is told a major brouhaha took place between the two recently, but it’s unclear whether a phone was tossed or a shouting match took place. […]
Word is the duo are continuing to talk – but there is no logical discourse due to Rauner’s refusal to negotiate. […]
“Rauner, who has only known success in business, is fearless . . . and fearless can be dangerous when the lives of needy people are at stake,” the source added.

This is a prime example of when two men, unelected at the time they “met” and both may have had “dorm room” ideas to their own ideas…
… Now?… Now the dorm room is behind them both, and like some college friends we all know… some realize they live in the real world now, while some believe the dorm room fantasies are worth chasing, no matter what the real work says.
Problem is… Rauner’s dorm room mentality is attached to “making”, feeling Rahm “owes” him, and, you guessed it, leveraging Rahm to make that 3am dorm room dream for Rauner real for Bruce Rauner.
“Dude, we ain’t in college anymore!”
“But I got you your summer job, you owe me loads for other stuff too!”
“Honestly, even back then… I thought these idea were bizarre.”

Anyone else feel like the Rahm-Rauner relationship has been the most overrated “inside baseball” political story in Illinois this year? Everyone talks about it, but it hasn’t moved the needle. There’s just no there there…at least not yet.

Jesse Sharkey has a rich father-in-law. OK. I guess that’s relevant to someone somehow.
Rahm is sticking up for the people so hard that it’s hurting his friendship with Rauner. Whatever.
They’re the same guy. The exception is that Rauner is content to stroll around the locker room with his indifference flopping while Rahm avails himself of the insincere towel of caring about “the people” he serves.

Rauner must be marginalized. Put out into the back pasture.
Ignore his calls, Mayor. He has not worthy of your time or attention. He is a problem, not part of any helpful solution.
The Meeting with the Four should be scheduled at a neutral/non-Rauner-power location. Otherwise, they are completely at risk of being props.
Maybe Mayor Rahm can offer to host the Meeting. Seriously. It would be lovely if all accepted this change and Mr. Rauner and his TA would be MARGINALIZED and the budget could be addressed.
Do it MAYOR! (R is already p.o. behind closed doors, for sure. What’s a little more truth and reality going to hurt him?)

Because “friendship” doesn’t change what they want or what they can do. Rahm doesn’t want RTWFL, and couldn’t convince GA Dems to vote for it even if he did. Rauner doesn’t want to “save” Chicago, and going out of his way to do so is a perilous adventure for a Republican Governor.

We’re being told that Rauner was elected by people who support this Turnaround Agenda. I wish they’d step forward and identify themselves and tell us all it’s merits. How will this magically pull us out of debt into prosperity? Some, particularly on this site will sneakily say they voted for Rauner to do what he is doing, but I’d like to know who exactly–outside of this blogsite–will robustly support and defend what our governor is doing. All of it.
In addition, how much additional debt is being run up with each day that passes? Does that sound like good business? Or corporate raiding?

The myth of the great Rahm-Rauner alliance has been fostered by GOPers — including Ragdono last week — who fantasize about the mayor muscling up on Chicago GA members to help the governor. Even if he was inclined to do so, I don’t think Rahm can deliver. He just doesn’t have that kinda pull in the GA. But the Raunerites can dream.

What a joke. Those “needy people” to whom Rahm is referring are actually his political payrollers, crony vendors and contractors, overstaffed departments like streets and san and a bunch of alderman who need to keep doling out grants and tax money to keep the campaigners happy.
And don’t forget CPS who spends about the same amount per pupil as Naperville 203 (and substantially more than Naperville-Aurora Indian Prairie 204) but provide far less contact hours and can’t even achieve mediocrity with all that money.
Oh, there may also be some truly deserving poor and disabled out there who need support, but they’re LAST on Rahm’s list of spending priorities.

I am not up on the History of Rahm, but I do know that IF he understands that what you THINK, SAY, and DO as a human being, are NOT IN HARMONY, there begins to be a breakdown in that Being.
He has no choice but to marginalized King Ludwig, oops, I mean King Rauner.

Cdog, I think you might be right that the four tops eventually solve this sans Rauner. I don’t see any other endgame. So yes, Rahm should call that meeting. It might be some time before the Republican Leadership agrees, but as the pain level increases, so might the incentive to abandon BKR.

Rauner won on the basis that he will do something different and sorely needed to turn things around in this state. Now that he’s holding to his word, everyone keeps dangling the needy out there as incentive to break him from his position. Well, that has apparently worked with everyone in the past, which is why nothing substantial has been accomplished to start digging us out of the mess we’re in. If Rauner gives in too, what has been gained? Are we really advocating for keeping the status quo??

HProf, we are there–It is time to marginalize the Crazy King. He is not dealing with reality.
And, if what AZ Bob says has some bits of accuracy, those with the power should be watching for it and fixing it, one incident at a time. It’s all about the organizational culture that is set by those in charge. (Don’t follow how Rauner’s organizationl culture is developing; he obviously is creating a “code of silence’” like never seen before in state government. For those under his control, they can think, but they better not say, or do.)

It is abundantly clear rauner listens to no one, including his wife. Including former governors. Radogno and Durkin, and their caucuses, have either actually bought into the agenda or find it safest to remain silent. Editorial boards? Ha.
Rahm probably let rauner have it–bluntly and loudly. Rauner likely responded in kind. So much for leverage. Meanwhile, we are headed for the rocks at full speed.

Also, LOL at the idea that Rauner ran as some aggressive change agent. Everything about his campaign- refusing to get specific, denying he had a union agenda, bringing out his Democratic wife, touting all the newspaper endorsements- was to sell the idea that he was the safe, steady choice.

Talking to Rauner hasn’t worked.
Rahm has to be frustrated, just like everyone else. If the November meeting is a repeat of Rauner’s bone-headed campaign lingo - then Bruce Rauner is going to see his political career ending sooner than he fantasized.
Governors drive the cars. When a state crashes, the driver is held responsible. Rauner has been playing chicken with Illinoisans and responsible people are not going to support him. Worse, instead of building ILGOP, Rauner’s actions are showing Illinoisans that ILGOP should never have control over the state government again.

I managed to read the entire Sneed column. It also contained a reference to “the battling Bickersons.”
Don Ameche and Frances Langford played the argumentative married couple in a radio program that was quite popular during the 1940s.

It would be interesting to see just how much support there is for this Governor now The people I know who voted for him are starting to regret supporting him And he did not win to say the least by a landslide
