*** UPDATED x2 - Retracted *** OK, I gotta reopen the blog for this

Posted in:

*** UPDATE 1 *** I posted the BlueRoomStream tweets below and then went back to my personal stuff that I had to finish up today. I eventually watched the video after somebody mentioned in comments that he didn’t hear the governor use the word “victim.” Tony is on the road, so I’ve asked him to give me a time stamp when he gets home because I listened to the remarks and didn’t hear “victim” either.

*** UPDATE 2 *** BlueRoomStream has retracted the “victim” tweet and apologized.

Sorry about that, kids. Those guys are usually rock solid. These things happen, I suppose. Talk to you tomorrow.

[ *** End Of Updates *** ]

* Wow. Just… Wow…

According to Tony at BlueRoomStream, the governor didn’t elaborate about how he is a victim.

…Adding… This one’s priceless, too…

  1. Rich, I hope today’s BlueRommStream debacle by Gov. Rauner will be a topic for one of your next columns.

  2. This guy is not capable of governing. After Jan. 1, pro-union moderate Republicans need to team up with Democrats not named Franks in the GA. This veto-proof coalition needs to pass a balanced budget, which would include the necessary tax increases. Then, they need to override Rauner’s eventual veto.

This coalition needs to govern like the governor is not even there. Because he isn’t.

  6. Be nice if that was Rauner’s 47% moment, but I doubt it.

One thing though — after watching the video and press availability via Livestream — he is absolutely no statesman. There’s not an ounce — not one ounce — of statesmanship in him. Not what he says. not how he talks about people. not how he talks to the audience.

And the “bidness” stuff. The way he says “bidness” — either he doesn’t know better or he does it because he thinks that what folks in Bloomington like to hear — is beyond silly and patronizing. He’s not a very smart man either.

  11. That’s a meltdown type quote.

The “I’m sorry”s are bad enough, but a governor is never a victim, nor a self-proclaimed victim. That’s lacking.

@Blueroomstream Gov. Rauner: ” I’m one of the biggest donors to child care in Illinois”.

Tell that to your embarrased wife, the President of Ounce how all that “donatin’ to children” is goin’

When it it be enough? What can you say to defend a governor from melting down in front of your own eyes.

    Today was a complete disaster.

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Nov 2, 15 @ 4:06 pm

  12. I think a question for the next debate should be whether you plan to characterize inept leadership strategies as victimization.

If so, there should be some automatic disqualification for political office.

  13. Look, some of my friends are poor people!

Comment by Anonymous Monday, Nov 2, 15 @ 4:09 pm

  14. ”I’m one of the biggest donors to child care in Illinois.”

That attitude, and the sort of charity help like was provided to the Danville family last week, is exactly the goal of anti-government types like Rauner. They simply don’t want government to play a role in helping people. They believe charities and individuals should, and actually can, take care of everyone who needs assistance.

Comment by Former Downstater Monday, Nov 2, 15 @ 4:10 pm

  15. I don’t think many care about the words. The coffee shops around Bloomington still blame Madigan and see Rauner as the savior. Those folks will not see this as a meltdown.

    Comment by anon123 Monday, Nov 2, 15 @ 4:11 pm

  16. Dear GOP GA,

The Governir holding you hostage said he a victim.

Is this meltdown of a leader “who” you feel compelled to be in WWI trenches with because you are required to be there?

    None of you are willing to say;

“Illinois governors are never victims. They are suppose to be leaders. They are suppose to be the catalyst of making government work. They are suppose to inspire those around them to be heroes for all of Illinois. ‘I’m the victim’ is not what an Illinois governor ever says”

Who..who among YOU… will be the ones to stop the meltdown.

Who…who among YOU… will be the ones to finally say… enough?

    Who.

  22. Victim and #winning!

Comment by SuperStar Monday, Nov 2, 15 @ 4:22 pm

  23. There are people out there with whom his message resonates. There’s not a strong enough counter voice out there getting headlines in an attempt to reframe his argument.

In all fairness, I can see why he would consider himself a victom. He hasn’t had a lot of experience in life not getting what he wants or having his bullying approach not be immediately effective.

People with disabilities, people who are poor, people who experience domestic violence, on the other hand, rarely think of themselves as victims. They don’t have time to while thinking of making sure they have a place to live, can generate some income, pay their bills, and have a consistent supply of food for their families.

Comment by Earnest Monday, Nov 2, 15 @ 4:22 pm

  24. Do they travel with the stage? That’s the same event set-up I’ve seen before. Red and blue signs, black backdrop, crowd seated on risers surrounding him. It looks good, like a television talk-show set.

And Rauner comes across about as authentic as a television talk-show host.

  26. ===Every time this guy goes on the road, he makes it more difficult to get to a deal. Every time.===

Rauner can NOT go off script. Rauner gets on the road and he thinks. Thinking is awful for a guy who absolutely can not think on his feet.

Can’t keep him in a bunker, can’t roll him out, heck Ole Slip and Sue might be a better asset to not wreck anything, so let her go talk.

Today was a disaster, can’t walk back “I’m the victim”

    Nope. Can’t.

  27. Aw, boo, my comment got deleted for some reason (prob too many caps). Anyway - I do not understand why this isn’t in commercials by Democratic organizations, unions, etc…like, tomorrow.

Comment by Concerned Observer Monday, Nov 2, 15 @ 4:24 pm

  28. Yeah, a commercial simply listing the current consequences of the budget hostage situation with a clip of him saying “I’m the victim” after each one would be an absolute gut punch of an ad.

Comment by Served Monday, Nov 2, 15 @ 4:28 pm

  29. Rich, It’s my belief that this guy has no interest in a deal. I believe that he thinks that when the MAP grants don’t come and poor people are dying because they don’t have subsidized home heating and the roads haven’t been salted or plowed that Madigan and Cullerton will fold. That’s why he’s holding out for January. He will burn this entire state down to get his way and it wont affect him or his ilk in the least.

Comment by Anonymous Monday, Nov 2, 15 @ 4:29 pm

  30. His own built in crowd that he is talking to doesn’t even seem to be buying what he is saying by the looks on their faces.

The only person who can afford to run a TV ad this early is Bruce Rauner. And he ain’t gonna do that.

    Move along.

  32. Why did we elect such a weak governor who allows himself to be victimized?

Comment by Union Dues Monday, Nov 2, 15 @ 4:34 pm

  33. At 5:00, he says, “Since I became governor, I’ve been travelin’ around the United States, on my nickel, tryin’ to recruit companies to come here.”

Have I missed word of these trips? Where did he go and when?

Comment by Down Soutn Monday, Nov 2, 15 @ 4:39 pm

  37. It’s not about the Ads.

It’s about the disconnect and meltdown of where a governor’s head is at, and where it should be.

    Respectfully.

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Nov 2, 15 @ 4:41 pm

  38. I think the working poor who relied on child care, people with disabilities, domestic abuse victims, the poor relying on heating and AC subsidies that disappeared, and on and on - they are the victims. Earnest makes a good point though - most of those real victims are too busy just trying to exist to spend time or have the resources to get their story out or play the victim card.

    Comment by Joe M Monday, Nov 2, 15 @ 4:41 pm

  39. Where’s the I’m the victim Part, i watched the Video, I didn’t catch it…….

Comment by Someone You Should Know Monday, Nov 2, 15 @ 4:44 pm

  40. ” I’m one of the biggest donors to child care in Illinois”.

Hmmm. So now social services funding is going to digress to a competition between .01% for bragging rights?

What a strange world that would be where the care of the disadvantage, in order to alleviate the taxpayer, fell to the generosity and ego-stroking of the donors. Scary.

Comment by cdog Monday, Nov 2, 15 @ 4:45 pm

  41. This is too funny. If he’s the victim he must live in an alternate reality.

It’s a very good point. I have a Democratic State Representative and a Republican State Senator and I like them both. However, I’m going to find it very difficult to be supportive of the Senator’s re-election campaign. I”m curious to know if there are any issues at all that are more important than avoiding a well-funded Rauner campaign against you. Any at all.

Not sure of your comment but what I meant there is a large segment that don’t take issue with Rauner’s statements. I think it is appalling that Rauner has not taken ownership however many feel he is blameless.

  51. - I’m one of the biggest donors to child care in Illinois-

As if this would atone for his actions and complicity with destroying peoples economic livelyhoods. Well, it’s good that people are seeing this. People make a lot of assumptions about the wealthy. They are given a lot of slack. I think those days are starting to come to a close.

Comment by Honeybear Monday, Nov 2, 15 @ 5:03 pm

  52. I took the time to listen to his entire presentation and non-press Q and A. I never heard the words “I am the victim here” uttered by Rauner.

I didn’t bother with the press availability portion of the video.

  53. There’s not a strong enough counter voice out there getting headlines in an attempt to reframe his argument.

Agreed. Fortunately the Governor commits unforced errors, if the Governor’s adversaries were more active in trying to effectively win the messaging war we’d probably have more errors of this sort getting the attention of more voters.

    Yes he does.

It was interesting to hear of his inflating the Dem budget bill deficit. A few more like this, we’ll hear that the Dem budget was $8 billion out of whack.
