Someone keeps blaring the “Solidarity Forever” song on the conference call of the Lt. Gov’s task force to whack collective bargaining….lol
The task force is made of legislators, mayors and a library trustee. During the meeting, they approved recommendations like incentivizing schools to consolidate and encouraging municipalities to share equipment.
Then, came this proposal “to make collective bargaining permissive, instead of mandatory.”
Before they could vote, they were interrupted by the song of a banjo, then a choir singing the song “Solidarity Forever.” The chorus repeats the title phrase, then goes on to say “for the union makes us strong.”
The task force’s chair, Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti, tried to pushed on, saying “I suppose someone put us on hold, without mute…” when the song again began to play. It happened several more times, including as a coda until the call ended after Sanguinetti adjourned the meeting.
Even so, the proposal passed 15-1.

I do enjoy when the Rauner Crew gingerly trots, no… gingerly places… gingerly places Ole Slip and Sue in her proper prop assignment and returns her safely without incident.
That’s really the win here; for Governor Rauner and Illinois.

Karen Hasara was a good Senator and good Mayor of Springfield, but having her on this task force is a joke. She’s been involved in a local “task force” for years and, since the group’s founding and efforts, nothing’s been done. Nothing. No offices have been shuttered or combined. No major services have been scaled back. What a waste of people’s time and energy - the Springfield way.

What I sm calling, very respectfully, “The Norseman Primer”, is about as good as it can be formulated as to the where and what the Labor Movement should be doing, or already doing until March 2016.
I think - Norseman - “recommented” it not too long ago in a discussion with - Honeybear -.

Ah, there it is. So honestly from my vantage at AFSCME we are engaging feverishly every single one of those items. I’m actually personally taking on item 4 for my local. I met a lot of the trades sisters and brothers at the Edwardsville City Council meeting when they voted down the TA. I’m looking forward to the coordination of direct actions. Planning and organizing is well well underway.

There are currently a number of State incentives centered on school district consolidations and unit school district formation. However, all consolidations/unit district formations require referenda. The fact is that over the past three decades there have been only a very small number of consolidations. There are two main reasons: communities do no want to relinquish sole ” ownership” of their schools and when the cost analysis numbers on run there is either no or little actual long-term savings. Another reason is that most attempted school consolidations occur south of Interstate 80 where the vast amount of school districts are located. New restructured school districts often involve revised school bussing operations which translate into higher costs and many students having longer travel times to and from school.

There are 4 D legislators on that commission. Means at least 3 of them voted to get rid of collective bargaining. Any of the committee members talking about their votes yet, especially the D members who just went along with the “other side”?

With months on the Wheaton City Council, expecting her to understand Robert’s Rules of Order is a stretch.
Heck, even those presiding over Illinois’ legislative chambers often refer to the parliamentarian to run session. I’m not surprised by this.

Incentivizing = $$. Last I heard from El Capitan Rauner, Illinois es broke.
But, maybe the Lt. Gov could hash out a plan with the last guy to try this…I think his name was Pat something.

I think there is some consternation in the Union ranks, as the Guv’s contract approvals , earlier this week, demonstrate. Many tradesmen I know are members of a PAC of tradesmen. The purpose is to not be beholden to one party. Basically, they are going to D’s & R’s and donating to the candidate that is going to play ball with them. I feel this is a game changer.

In the past, these hearings have had several members attend via speakerphone. I don’t recall non-members being allowed on the line. So do we know whether this was orchestrated by one of the members of the committee, or was it infiltrated by someone else. Sounds like a lively meeting.

It’s going to boil down to this, unavoidable;
The Raunerite and IllinoisGO candidates are NOT a friend to the Labor Movement.
It’s up to all of Labor to identify races that they will be impact in, and defeat Raunerite and/or IllinoisGO candidates.
They can be Republicans or Democrats, but Raunerites on Labor, that’s the line.
We’ll see in March how it goes in the primaries.

Her mission was to offer ways to consolidate levels of government. Somehow she got sidetracked into anti-union recommendations. Par for the course on every issue so far this year. If it weren’t so sad it would be laughable.

The lone “no” vote was Sen. Linda Holmes (D-Aurora).

Actually this goes back to 2011 or earlier and every one of the 17 members was appointed before Rauner took office.

The thing about ole Slip and Sue is that she was llokibg for a job in the Quinn Adminstration in a Quinn agency.
She’s getting paid, Slip and Sue got “hired”.
