The Sun-Times exodus continues

Posted in:

* Before long it’ll just be Mark Brown and some interns over there

Esteemed Chicago journalist Carol Marin is stepping down after 11 years as a columnist for the Sun-Times to join the faculty of DePaul University this spring.

The university announced Monday that Marin and her longtime producer, Don Moseley, will become co-directors of the new Center for Journalism Integrity and Excellence and will teach investigative reporting classes in the College of Communication.

Marin, 67, will continue as political editor at NBC-owned WMAQ-Channel 5 and a regular contributor to “Chicago Tonight” on public television WTTW-Channel 11. […]

The Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider, president of DePaul University, said in a statement: “DePaul has an opportunity to shape the next generation of journalists and media professionals with the highest standards of ethics and quality. We are thrilled that the Center for Journalism Integrity and Excellence will be led by two journalists who embody the ethical commitments we hope to teach.”

Carol and I have been friends for years. I wish her nothing but the best.

  1. Wow. Huge win for DePaul. Huge loss for the newspaper

  2. I am not a fan of hers and hope that she will be less biased in the classroom then she has been in the paper

  3. I think the most pressing question is where, in Illinois or further afield, might any graduates of this program actually obtain journalism jobs. Maybe the future’s just Politico…..

  4. She interviewed my daughter for the CPS book ban thing. Couldn’t have been more nice. She put my daughter at ease, and let all viewpoints be heard. Of course CPS Admin failed to show up. Unavoidably detained, I’m sure. Glad she’s leaving The Sun-Times. They don’t deserve her.

  5. Her work on Chicago Tonight is and has always been top notch. She could rest on her considerable laurels and just mail it in, but she doesn’t. It’s clear she always does her homework.

But to me, her Sun-Times column is kinda mediocre. One less person at that shop writing about the Koschman case is not a bad thing.

  6. Is Marin leaving the Sun-Times voluntary? She’s staying on at channels 5 and 11. Since when can’t a faculty member write a column?

Tribune Publishing is cutting loose 500, about 7% of its workforce, through buyouts. There have been round after round of layoffs there for years.

  7. Congrats Graduates!

Now you can investigate why DePaul took your money when they know there are no jobs.

Remember, you are all excellent and Integral!

    Good luck, Carol.

  8. Carol is the best…I wish her well…she never suffered fools gladly…Godspeed woman…

  9. Carol Marin’s departure doesn’t feel as much like a loss for the Sun-Times as for the city itself. I don’t have that high of a regard for most of the reporters in town. Carol is one of the very best ones.

  10. Brown will only be gone before Steinberg if Brown’s contract is up first. Interesting challenge for Marin on how you translate standards of integrity to new media.

You’re right, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of other cases to highlight Anita Alvarez’s miserable tenure as SA.

  14. Will there be any place left for DePaul journalism students to find work?

  15. She must have found the fountain of youth because she looks ten years younger than her reported age.

  16. Ms. Marin,

All the best to you and your next adventure. DePaul has gained.

    Good luck.

  17. I first met Carol at the Blagojevich trial. The case had been given to the jury, and the media types - local and national alike - were camped out in the Dirksen Bldg cafeteria. Somehow I got lucky enough to sit at the same table as Carol.

We didn’t get to talk much. Not only was she working on a for the Sun-Times and probably others for NBC 5 and Chicago Tonight, but she devoted any free moment she had to a young man in a wheelchair that came to the Courthouse to watch the action. So far as I know he wasn’t with the media or any other organization. He was just curious. Carol talked to him that whole day and answered all of his questions.

Class act. Enjoy the other side.

  18. - Precinct Captain -

Agreed, there are plenty of other cases to highlight. Good work by the Sun-Times on the Kochman story, but I’d like to read about something else now.

  22. Now whole graduating classes will learn how to make up stories about Dan Proft. Heard she’ll be teaching liberal bias 101.
