Maybe it was the gloomy, cold weather, or maybe it was just standard Monday blues, but the death of David Bowie really put me in a funk yesterday. Every time somebody dies it makes us confront our own mortality, and Bowie was a big part of my life. He lived his life as we all wish we could! He created, collaborated, transformed, and overcame. He had beautiful voice, and he was proficient on many instruments, not the least of which was the 12 string guitar. He dies as he lived, as an artist with grace. He will be missed.

I realized how old I am when yesterday I was talking about his passing and my 21 year old daughter said, “that was the guy who sang Little Drummer Boy right?”
For that generation that song may be how they remember him.

Changes One Bowie may have been one the first 33 & 1/3 albums I bought. Fantastic music and a great artist in every sense.
I attended the David Bowie Is exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary art in Chicago last December towards the end of its run. Previous to seeing that exhibit I really did not understand the breadth of Bowie’s influence on popular culture in more than just the music world.
Most interesting to me at the exhibit was a “Black Light” style poster for a show of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Pink and green psychedelic watercolors like the original Jimi Hendrix vintage poster I picked up in school.
The text of the panel explaining the poster for you Bowie fans:
“Bowie saw the Jimi Hendrix Experience at London’s Saville Theatre on May 7, 1967. The Beatles, advised by their manager Brian Epstein, had leased the theater to provide a large West End venue for live music. This poster, by the design duo Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, reflects the fashion for psychedelia that peaked during the 1967 “summer of love.”
Since Bowie was younger, I never thought of him being a contemporary of Jimi Hendrix or the Beatles. R.I.P David Bowie, a talented artist and a true original in every sense.

I posted this under the Stones song yesterday, but this is more appropriate:
This was the first Bowie video I ever paid any attention to. This shows just how rocking, subversive and really, really funny this guy could be. He also had some of the musicians switch instruments so everything sounds eschew.
He didn’t care if his fans followed his next phase or not. Like Miles Davis, he was totally fearless.

His music is so closely associated with my college years. “Let’s Dance” is one of the cassette tapes I wore out in my Walkman. RIP amazing artist.
