Emanuel says Rauner is “his own worst enemy”

Posted in:

* After what just happened to me this morning, I can most certainly relate

Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Friday said Gov. Bruce Rauner’s public scolding of him — and other politicians — gets in the way of solving already challenging issues.

“The governor can be his own worst enemy and can’t seem to get out of his own way, as yesterday showed as it relates to the pension,” Emanuel told reporters at a breakfast event downtown. […]

“I wish he had as much energy . . . in challenging the problems that face the state as he does challenging people in calling them names,” Emanuel said.

Emanuel praised the governor for trying to “move something forward” on pension reform but said he needs to do a better job of building relationships if he wants to have success on “serious issues.”

“You can call me names all you want and you attack me, but attack the problems of Illinois, which would be a better idea,” Emanuel said.

  1. “Doesn’t he know these our friends of ours?”

Pretty soon, the only place Rauner might find a friend is when he jokes himself up in a bathroom, looking in a mirror.

    Sound familiar?

  2. The only thing saving us is Rauner’s blind foolishness. If this man followed the standard rules of governing, he would have a far more powerful position than he does.

This past year has seen Rauner lose any mandate he acquired with his election. He bled credibility as he reneged on many of his campaign promises. He exposed himself as a liar, an untrustworthy individual and a buffoon repeatedly.

For a week, he was someone. The came his Decatur PowerPoint presentation when he began ripping off his campaign masks.

  3. Rauner was foolish for thinking that Mayor Emmanuel would help him out in transforming Springfield. The Mayor in my opinion lead him on. Emmanuel also has the thinnest skin in politics for an expert bomb thrower.

  4. He should have hired more people that have been inside Springfield for years. That brings respect and knowledge - but when you bring in outsiders like Goldberg - who think because they have worked in D.C. they are better - this is what you get.

  5. I hate to agree with Rahm, but even Rauner supporters have to acknowledge there’s some truth to the “can’t get out of his own way” quote.

  6. Who would have ever thought that “Rhambo” would be chewing out any other politician for not being a nice enough fellow. Tell us again how you always chose honey over vinegar, Mr. Mayor.

  7. ===Emmanuel also has the thinnest skin in politics for an expert bomb thrower.===

It appears Bruce Rauner is one too.

===Rauner was foolish for thinking that Mayor Emmanuel would help him out in transforming Springfield.===

No, - Louis G Atsaves -, Rauner was clueless that Rahm had House votes. Huge difference. That’s on Rauner.

===The Mayor in my opinion lead him on.===

When INS’T Rauner a victim? LOL

  8. Rauner’s heard of the peter principle but didn’t think it applied to his majesty.

  9. These are tense & challenging times. Everyone with eggshell sensitivities should get out of the arena. That excludes commentators here, of course. ;)

  10. is this the case of the pot calling the kettle black. i realize everyone on this site is going after rauner, but rahmbo is hardly a credible source.

  11. >“I wish he had as much energy…in challenging the problems that face the state as he does challenging people in calling them names.”

Golly, so do I, For a long time I’ve believe he has all the potential in the world to be a really good governor, but I’m starting to wonder if what he’s shown us so far is what he’s got to bring to the position. Maybe it isn’t strategy after all, maybe it’s the only way he’s capable of operating? I hope not, for all our sakes.

  12. Governor Sauron isn’t his worst enemy as long as I’m still around.

  13. Wonder if Karen Lewis gave Rahm the same advice after their closed-door meeting during the last strike?

  14. You gotta love it.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel saying someone else needs to tone it down.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel saying that someone else is his own worst enemy.

After giving that chat about policing in DC, Rahm has to be running for most tone-deaf politician in the country.

Comment by Flannery Fan Monday, Jan 25, 16 @ 12:42 pm

  15. This is too funny. Rahm who spent 5 million of City funds to settle a case keeping the reasons why quiet in order to get reelected, who raises taxes but still can’t pay for CPS to keep, the lights on, who has seen 200 shootings since January 1 and who could not get elected again to any office in the USA is calling Rauner his own worst enemy. Rahm, I don’t think the WH will be helping you out of this mess you are in, sommaybe just maybe you might want to reconsider improving the relationship you have with the one person who will determine whether you can keep your school lights on

  16. Look in the mirror Rahm.

The governor can be Illinois’ worst enemy and can’t seem to get out of his own way…

    Better.

  18. I would echo some of the other commenters here, as my opinion is very similar. Rahm’s comments are pretty rich, considering his reputation/background!

  19. From the mayor who has watched his city and schools sink into the pit of insolvency. How any Democratic leader can claim the high ground is Illinois is proof of the problem we face in trying to turn this state around.

  20. In other news, Adam Sandler criticized Eddie Murphy for the horrible movies he’s chosen to work on recently.
