    Comment by A guy Wednesday, Feb 10, 16 @ 10:07 am

  32. Downstate@9:02, you should realize what exactly Wisconsin did. First, in order to prevent a union from being decertified, 50%+1 of the employees eligible to join that union must vote to maintain certification annually. If we needed those kinds of numbers in elections, no one would ever get elected. Even getting 50% voter turnout is ridiculously difficult, and getting that many to vote “your” way is an order of magnitude moreso.

Now, what is the purpose of maintaining that union certification? They can’t bargain over wages or benefits anymore, so what exactly is the point? Workplace rules? I probably wouldn’t want to pay dues to bargain over that either.

It really bothers me when people like you use statistics yet have no comprehension of the causes. It isn’t just that employees were given this “right to work”. It is that being in a public employee union has no benefits anymore as that union can’t bargain on your behalf. Remember that Rauner initially tried to prohibit public sector unions in Illinois from doing the same. There’s two ways to starve a union. The first is you allow freeloaders to overwhelm them, busting their budget. The second is to make membership unappealing. If public employees in Wisconsin could bargain over wages, and the rule was changed to 50% of the vote rather than eligible employees (this is still rougher than most union laws, as the standard is that employees can vote to decertify, not that they have to vote annually to certify) then union membership in Wisconsin would not have gone down nearly as much.

Look, the reason why a certain party wants to destroy unions isn’t because unions are bad. It is because without union money, the corporate and rich donors are all that is left, and that party has an advantage with them.

Unions are a good thing, and nearly everyone who hasn’t been brainwashed to believe the opposite can clearly see their benefits when their hands aren’t tied behind their back like they are in Wisconsin.

  35. –Um, what force is that?–

    Trib, 2-4-16

–Three times as many Chicagoans side with the teachers union as with Mayor Rahm Emanuel on how to improve public schools at a time when the two sides remain locked in contentious contract negotiations, a Chicago Tribune poll has found.

The survey also found that Emanuel’s approval rating on education has fallen to a record low as the mayor and Chicago Public Schools CEO Forrest Claypool are slashing budgets and cutting jobs in the face of the latest massive budget shortfall. Voters’ displeasure with the mayor’s handling of education tracks with the similarly low marks they gave Emanuel on his overall job performance and handling of crime.–

  36. =He re-election is coming up. If one quality opponent runs against her she’s toast. The “Big” Bargaining turned down the city’s offer 40-0 that she supported.=

Nobody of any import will run against her and if they do, they’ll lose around 80-20. I don’t think she’s the least bit scared of reelection. Furthermore, the Big Bargaining Team has one person who ran against her and the brother of another of another caucus’s vice-presidential candidate the last time around. Anybody who runs on “CTU should have accepted the first serious offer” won’t even get 20%.

That said, despite my affection for Chicago’s teachers, this is pretty cringe worthy. I know Karen Lewis is a big science fiction fan and I have a feeling they were goofing around and someone said “Oh we should make a recording out this.”
