Rep. Ken Dunkin hit in network TV ad as he pushes higher ed bill

Posted in:

* This ad was recorded off a friend’s TV set with a mobile phone, so it’s kinda blurry. But it is a very hard-hitting spot, running on expensive network TV and paid for by Democrat Juliana Stratton’s campaign

* Script…

TEXT: Do we really know Ken Dunkin?

WOMAN 1: The history of violence and menacing criminal behavior towards women.

WOMAN 2: Found guilty of battery.

MALE KID: Voted to allow people to carry loaded guns on our streets.

WOMAN 3: Failed to pay child support.

FEMALE KID: Voted with Republicans to cut child care for thousands of kids.

WOMAN 1: Tried to weaken punishment for sex offenders.

WOMAN 4: Violated protection orders.

FEMALE KID: So why is he still in charge?

TEXT: Say no to Ken Dunkin.

* Meanwhile, Rep. Dunkin held a press conference today to call on the House to pass his higher education bailout bill that we discussed yesterday.

Rep. Dunkin noted that Gov. Rauner said today he would sign the bill and said “all” House Republicans have committed to voting for it. He said 47 House members have agreed to vote for it, which would apparently be all Republicans and himself.

  1. To be fair, anybody would look bad with Ken Dunkin’s record.

  2. Maybe Ken Dunkin and Jason Gonzales can form their own lobbying firm. Or maybe they can share an office when they start working for the governor.

  3. That’s a pretty compelling ad. It’s different enough that it might cut through the clutter. B+

  4. It’s a shame that everyone will be in NY for the vote….

Wouldn’t it be nice if all these people’s ‘representatives’ could go and get a budget passed? I believe it’s spelled h.y.p.o.c.r.i.t.e…..

  6. Dunkin and the Republicans he controls.

    There, fixed it…

  8. The governor should be embarrassed that he had to stoop to Ken Dunkin just to get an ally who is a Democrat.

  9. Is he a member of the Democratic caucus anymore?

Comment by JS Mill Wednesday, Feb 24, 16 @ 4:34 pm

  10. If you read the bill, it is subpar at best. It has no meaningful criteria for distribution of the funds. This is a set up to try and say Madigan denied them a vote to get funding for higher ed. I am all for funding higher ed, but with a well thought out and professionally crafted bill. Maybe McCann can present one like that.

  12. P.S. Meant to add that while watching the press conference, even someone as politically unsophisticated as me could see this as a move by Rauner to show others that he will reward those who, like Dunkin, do what he wants them to do.

    Comment by Independent retiree/lawyer/journalist Wednesday, Feb 24, 16 @ 4:44 pm

  13. “Appropriates $160,000,000 from the General Revenue Fund to the Board of Higher Education for emergency assistance to public universities. Appropriates $40,000,000 from the
General Revenue Fund to the Illinois Community College Board for emergency assistance to community colleges. Effective
immediately, but does not take effect at all unless Senate Bill 3044 of the 99th General Assembly becomes law.” The Bill does not say what he says it says.

  14. Ken needs to actually read his bill. It does not “only affect” EIU, CSU, WIU, and Northeastern IL. It gives the Brd of Higher Ed the authority to distribute the funding as they see fit.

My favorite part of the presser: At about the 8:30 mark, Maze Jackson starts whispering lines to Dunkin from behind the camera!

Still no details about which funds are being swept.

    Comment by Red X Wednesday, Feb 24, 16 @ 5:10 pm

  15. Won’t it be fun to watch this bill die in committee and be replaced with an eerily similar Madigan sponsored bill? How will the Rs be voting on that???

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Wednesday, Feb 24, 16 @ 5:21 pm

  16. I mean any port in a storm for EIU but this is just another bill attached to a poison pill. This was designed for our press conference yesterday so he could try to stave off losing the election.

The constituents in Charleston and at EIU are gathering the pitchforks and torches as we speak.

  17. TV ads in a Chicago House primary. Gonna be an expensive year.

Comment by Elo Kiddies Wednesday, Feb 24, 16 @ 5:44 pm

  18. Duncan cherry picks the universities he wants to help but it’s not in the legislation. What about the other schools? Everyone is hurting.

Comment by Because I said so.... Wednesday, Feb 24, 16 @ 6:23 pm

  19. Loved the Ad. Soon they’re going to take the gloves off…

Comment by Mouthy Wednesday, Feb 24, 16 @ 7:02 pm

  20. Ok. That’s it. She just lost my support. I was most tremendously on her side.

Rehashing someone’s criminal records from decades ago completely negates her own area of so called-expertise: criminal justice reform and conflict meditation.

Comment by Wayne Bibliotech Wednesday, Feb 24, 16 @ 8:05 pm

  21. Good ad. Dude sold out his constituency.

Comment by Ray del Camino Wednesday, Feb 24, 16 @ 8:06 pm

  22. Reggie told us it was just for EIU, CSU, and NEIU. He lied. However, this would be politically impossible if it really only funded those institutions.

I don’t think Reggie or Dunkin wrote the legislation (I’ve heard it described as the worst written appropriations bill anyone has ever seen) so they may not have even known what was in it.

I’m pretty sure Rauner’s people wrote it.

Comment by Chucktownian Wednesday, Feb 24, 16 @ 8:13 pm

  23. Where did Ken attend school? It was difficult to tell considering he struggled with that speech? Further to that, he was not transparent nor specific during the appropriation question. Or, was I the only one who noticed?

Comment by UMAN Wednesday, Feb 24, 16 @ 8:31 pm

  24. simply attach a poison pill to the bill.

Its more than obvious, with Dunkin’s ratings, Rauner is grasping at straws to have Dunkin appear more appealing.

Comment by tinsel town Thursday, Feb 25, 16 @ 3:31 am

  25. Some of the money that Emil Jones funneled to CSU in the past was through IBHE. Even when “competitive grants” such as HECA existed and had proposals that were scored, Emil would call the ED at IBHE and tell them how much of it should go to CSU and then IBHE would adjust everyone else’s grants to make up for it. Based on the OEIG and Auditor General’s work, I don’t think things have improved much at IBHE in terms of integrity.

  26. But Rauner will bail him out, right?

Comment by Hedley Lamarr Thursday, Feb 25, 16 @ 8:14 am

  27. Strong ad. When combined with Dunkin’s behavior in regards to the union anti-strike bills, a very negative portrait emerges.
