Dunkin twists Obama quotes, compares self to LaQuan McDonald and equates Madigan with slavers

Posted in:

[UPDATE: Comments are now open on this post.]

* Rep. Ken Dunkin is boldly trying to turn several nasty lemons into campaign lemonade with four new radio ads aimed at the African-American community.

One of Rep. Dunkin’s spots features excerpts of President Obama’s recent address to the Illinois General Assembly. The President’s statement about how finding common ground doesn’t make him “a sellout” is highlighted, as well as Obama’s infamous “Well, we’ll talk later, Dunkin” crack, which Dunkin spins as a major positive. “If you’re tired of business as usual in Springfield and ready to put people over politics, reelect Ken Dunkin”

* Dunkin uses the LaQuan McDonald shooting in another ad called “16 shots”

16 shots and a cover-up. They used a police report and a mug shot to make us believe the worst. But it was only after 13 months that we found out they lied. Now, Ken Dunkin’s opponents are up to their same old tricks, and they want us to believe the worst.

The ad then quotes extensively from a heavily favorable ABC 7 news report, which blames Speaker Madigan for dredging up “old dirt” on the legislator and uses audio from one of his alleged victims praising Dunkin, then concludes

Don’t let Ken Dunkin’s opponent criminalize another brother. Your son could be next.

Listen to the whole thing

* The next spot, called “Keep Ken Dunkin,” begins, “The Speaker of the House has done lost his mind, he’s trying to get black voters to dump Ken Dunkin.”

The ad lists several Dunkin accomplishments, then a character says “Every time a black man shows any signs of independence, Mike Madigan be like ‘Hell, no, we can’t have that.’”

“He wants to run his house, the Statehouse and our house,” another actor says. “He must think we’re stupid.”

“Man, over 400 years since slavery and we still have to fight to be free”

* The fourth ad uses banter from the Chicago Sun-Times editorial board interview of both candidates to more than just suggest that Dunkin’s opponent was recruited by House Speaker Michael Madigan. “Don’t let Mike Madigan steal your voice or your votes”

You’d never know by listening to that ad that the paper endorsed Dunkin’s opponent.

I’ll open comments tomorrow.

  2. “Over 400 years since slavery” Did he fail history or math? Or both?

  3. It’s incredibly vulgar for Dunkin to compare himself to Laquan McDonald.

  4. - Ottawa Phil -….

“When Truth Shouldn’t Get In the Way of Democratic Raunerites”

So, taking on and twisting the POTUS quote, you think that’s… smart… and great?

Says lots about you, I guess.

    To the Post,

I dunno if I’d take on POTUS to what he meant.

    Could there be blownback?

What if Obama decides to… “Set The Record Straight”?

Most likely not happening, but trying to make lemonade out of a lemon, using Obama’s embarrassing smack down and reversing it? Whoa.

    The got big… “eyes”…

    Big pair of “eyes”

  5. POTUS may not set the record straight, but boy do these ads give Stratton’s campaign openings to do so!

  7. Wow. Well I guess this is the closest thing I’ve seen to a hail mary in a primary election.

  9. When you lie to voters like this, you insult and expose yourself as someone who doesn’t believe in them.

Someone better ask Rauner why he is funding these kinds of lies in the media and get a few quotes why he thinks it is a good way to win an election.

  10. Money buys you a lot of exposure, whether it’s truthful or not. He is getting his name out there. Sad reflection on today’s politics.

  12. Dunkin is so unpopular among his colleagues, I’m not sure why he wants to stay. His life would surely be easier if he accepted an appointment in the Rauner administration. Which is what he’ll probably do if he loses anyway.

  13. Considering the district — do you think this will work for Dunkin? My sense is that the black middle class pockets of this district will find it offensive, but low information voters across the spectrum from the economic bottom to the top or who are new to the area, and this district runs the gamut on both measurements, might be swayed by it. And that’s what Dunkin is counting on — low information voters. It’s another version of paid-for notoriety being an effective campaign strategy, and it wouldn’t be nearly as easy in district with less turnover of population.

Who is the one thinking African-Americans are stupid? This is Ken Dunkin’s ad. If I were African-American I’d be insulted by the lack of proper grammar.

  15. - anon -

You are completely misreading the dynamic at play.

Rauner needs Dunkin there to stave off Madigan. That’s the ball game.

Dunkin using that need against Rauner is Dunkin’s play. It’s not that Dunkin is enamored with being a state Rep., it’s the power and leverage Dunkin has over Rauner holding that seat for Rauner.

    With respect.

  21. @Angry Chicagoan and @Cubs in ‘16 - have you heard any ads by former state sen Rickey ==Hollywood== Hendon?

@Rich has previously posted some of Hollywood’s hits. Google them and then brace yourself lol.
