Question of the day

* Your thoughts on the current performance of the White Sox, Blackhawks and other, lesser teams?

  1. Hawks are starting to look more like themselves these last couple games. Could be a good omen. Sox have been impressive. Cardinals are the Cardinals and will be around at the end of the season. I’d love to discuss how well the Cubs are doing, but the wording of the question excludes them from the conversation.

  2. - he threw in the caveat for lesser teams like the Cubs… LOL

    Comment by Allen D Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 1:48 pm

  3. Sox playing like they should have last year…Nice sweep over the weekend ….Hoping the Hawks awoke just in time to get to 2nd round…still need to crank up some D at the blue line to many 2-1 3-2 breaks. Puck drops at 7:30.

Comment by NorthsideNoMore Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 1:48 pm

  4. Sox have three stud starters and a strong bullpen. I think that will hold up. If they ever start scoring runs, they’ll make some noise late.

Jake is on a run for the ages. Nineteen earned runs in his last 25 regular season starts with two no-nos. Out of character, Lester is off to a strong start, plus that lineup can score in bunches.

So, baseball, has been very, very good to Chicago in April.

The Hawks have me on the verge of a stroke, but that’s playoff hockey. It’s so intense and can turn in a minute.

The Blues better not leave anything in the bag tonight; if you want to beat the champ, you’ve got to knock him out.

Comment by wordslinger Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 1:51 pm

  5. White Sox still need a bat (even if the current roster starts playing “to the back of their card”), but Rich Hahn is smart to take a wait-and-see approach: the team is winning and later in the season when some teams are dumping salary he can use that LaRoche money.

Re: Cubs - that Lackey game foreshadows their season (amazing position players, suspect and aging pitching), but goodness knows the way they’re raking in money they can also go out and get some help. Question is whether they’ll do so - I’ve always thought the Ricketts’ plan was to play for 2nd place, which packs the fans in, and hope they get lucky - but I can’t deny he spent this past off season.

Comment by lake county democrat Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 1:52 pm

  6. Cubs are the best team in baseball. Hawks win 3-2 tonight. I didn’t realize they still had baseball on the south side of Chicago…

    Comment by So_Ill Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 1:52 pm

  7. HA…good one, Rich. You mean the 15-4 ‘lesser team. This is the year.

Comment by Anonymous Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 1:52 pm

  8. Its early, of course, but the Sox are looking great.

The Hawks are not the Hawks of last year, I don’t their like chances tonight.

The Cardinals will be there at the end…its a long season and they know to make it work.

As for the lesser teams, well, I predict the Cubs will fall victim to the June Swoon.

Comment by Bronco Bahma Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 1:52 pm

  9. Here in the southern region, fans are typically split between Cards/Cubs and Hawks/Blues. The Blue’s fans have a real sense of dread about them.
And the Cardinal fans have just stopped talking.

Comment by Downstate Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 1:58 pm

  10. Sox have been surpassing expectations so far. Strong rotation and a + surprise.

As for the lesser teams in our fine state, this is all a cruel prelude to additional postseason heartbreak. /s

Comment by Formerly Known As... Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 1:59 pm

  11. The White Sox ownership should do all it can to keep Bernie out of the White House. If Bernie managed to get elected and was able to get more and more Americans educated, where would White Sox fans come from.

Comment by Groucho Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 2:00 pm

  12. === You mean the 15-4 ‘lesser team===

How many times have they played the horrific Cincinnati Reds so far this year? 7?

    C’mon. That’s blatant grade inflation.

Comment by Rich Miller Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 2:02 pm

  13. The Cubs will win out the remainder of the season, going a stunning 157-5, sweeping all playoff opponents and taking the Series in four. Jake Arrieta will throw an all-time record 17 no-hitters, and simultaneously set a single-game record for most grand slams by a pitcher.

Hawks will beat the Blues 4-2 tonight (with Ken Hitchcock’s firing coming tomorrow morning), and then go on to stomp the Stars, dominate the Ducks, and finally pound the Pens for the Cup.

And the White Sox fielded a team again this year? Good for them.

Comment by Boooooooo Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 2:02 pm

  14. Blackhawks need to play like champions tonight. St. Louis wants to choke, they need to choke. It’s their nature, made only more powerful by the Hawks letting them take a 3-1 lead before snatching the series away tonight. That’s going to leave a mark.

I’ll worry about baseball when the Hawks are done. Until then, congrats to the White Sox for a good start. They even sold a few seats in the upper deck when the sun started to shine. If they hope to add a bat or two later this year, they’re going to need to sell a LOT more tickets.

White Sox baseball. Good seats still available.

  15. It’s a cliche, but “it’s all good”.

Pay less attention to the Northside and the Fire, but I’m happy to see both win.

    Comment by A guy Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 2:09 pm

  16. Boooooo is wrong, there is no way that the Penguins will make it to the cup finals.

Comment by siriusly Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 2:09 pm

  17. Baseball is just so awesome this year…! There are other sports going on…?

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 2:14 pm

  18. If the Hawks win tonight the momentum should carry them through the Conference Finals. Not sure they have what it takes to beat The Caps or Pens but should be fun to watch.

Sox are over-performing despite their bats not always showing up and I’m loving every minute of it. So long as they can stay competitive I’m happy.

    Bulls are a disappointment.

Excited for the Bears and their draft. Pace actually looks like he knows what he’s doing. Here’s hoping he can keep it up.

Chicago Fire are better then last year but still need improvement.

Red Stars season opener was this past weekend. Support women’s soccer beyond just the world cup!

Did I forget anyone…? Nope. All there.

  19. –Pace actually looks like he knows what he’s doing. Here’s hoping he can keep it up.–

His first-round, seventh overall pick, wide receiver didn’t even pad up last year. Non-contact injury in training camp. Like from running in shorts on grass.

Here’s hoping he doesn’t keep that up.

Comment by wordslinger Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 2:23 pm

  20. What can you say abut the Hawks? Inconsistent on defense. Uneven offense. Unable to hold leads. Lack the killer instinct to put a team away (game 6 against Blues the exception, not the rule). Better lately, but not good enough. Toss up tonight, but expect Dallas to beat Caps for Cup.

Comment by WIUoblivion Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 2:30 pm

  21. Regardless of the team, winner or loser, they are a welcome distraction from the tribulations of what 1.4% is doing to the State.

  27. The Sox are ahead by 1/2 game in April. Gloat while you can. One thing for sure, win or lose, the Sox attendance for games is always less than 50 percent capacity except when the play the loveable losers.

Comment by pool boy Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 3:05 pm

  28. Although not a great hockey fan the Blues/Blackhawks matchup should be a great watch. Going for the Blues.

And never, never count my Cardinals out of any post-season play. They are struggling right now with injuries and getting the line-up set but they will still contend. On paper the Cubs should be the best team in the Division, if not the NL, right now. Yet there are well over 100 games to go!

Comment by illini Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 3:19 pm

  29. As a Blues fan, I’m used to seeing little past the first round, but to be up 3-1 and then give up back to back games… For shame. I was psyched they were up like that, but I should have known they’d throw it all away. The games have been exciting at least.

Comment by Me too Monday, Apr 25, 16 @ 3:23 pm

  30. == horrific Cincinnati Reds==
who were tied with the Cubs with a 5-1 record before they first played.

    Go Hawks!

  35. Hawks game Sat. night was amazing. hoping for tonight and hoping that all the players behave. The Sox? well that is just a treat to watch at all levels, timely hitting, great defense (left side of the field just way better this year), the triple play was awesome and much credit to Abreu who needs a boost right now, pitching (with the exception of Danks—perhaps not long for the South Side) doing quite well. Happily have absolutely no knowledge of the play of that other baseball team, you know, the one that has NEVER won a WSeries while playing north of Madison, except some guy got hurt and many people reacted like the “OH NO” of Santo from years ago.

  36. “Cubs are the best team in baseball.”

Who would have thought that could ever happen?

  39. It’s 14 and 5 to be accurate and as far as their chances for a WS title I’ll quote Morpheus from Martrix “They are the ones”..

  40. its a fun year to be a Chicago sports fan,

and as a Sox fan I wish I knew how good they can be this year.Too many one run games, but we’ve been on the winning side of most of them…
The pitching is improved as promised, but the offense is still waiting to gel. But as of today, the Sox are first in their division with the best record in the entire American League.
I’ll get to a game in May - the cold wind blowing off of Lake Michigan and i don’t get along.

Who in Springfield wants to drive up with me, for a day game or early evening start?
