Rahm kinda walks it back

Posted in:

* When talking to reporters today about the lack of trust he and others have of Gov. Bruce Rauner, Mayor Rahm Emanuel was asked if he regretted these comments about the governor’s wife last week…

"Is it any accident his own wife's organization has sued him?" #RahmEmanuel on @GovRauner @wlsam890 pic.twitter.com/WYw7WrlBPi

— Bill Cameron (@billjcameron) May 27, 2016

* Emanuel’s response…

"I should have noted Ounce of Prevention & not the First Lady. That I own & am responsible for." #Rahm @wlsam890 pic.twitter.com/u3kDFP942a

— Bill Cameron (@billjcameron) May 31, 2016

* It actually took him a bit to wander into that sentence…

“Well, first of all, Ounce of Prevention did sue. I’ll take ownership if I got hot. But that doesn’t hide the fact that Ounce of Prevention sued, which does tell you, in my view, that the lack of trust and what’s in the breakdown has led to organizations not just Ounce of Prevention, but others. And I should have noted the Ounce of Prevention and not the First Lady. And that I own and I’m responsible for.”

But at least he got there.

  1. With respect to Diana Rauner,

She shares stages in her role at Ounce and also shares press pops in that role too.

Not as First Lady, but as an active member of an organization, its president, no less, of an active organization involved in social services and that group relies on the state to fulfill its mission.

It that very narrow and specific role, and I mean in that very narrow and specific role, Mrs. Rauner isn’t a civilian.

This wouldn’t be an issue has she left.

Now, me saying ALL that is ridiculously different than the Mayor of the City of Chicago, who has vacationed, with his family and with Mrs. Rauner and her family, saying it.

But it doesn’t make it less true.

Rahm needs surrogates to point these thibgs out, not him. Rahm knows better.

  2. Rich folk and their corporate veils.

LizPhairTax, Inc. thinks the mayor and governor both stink but LizPhairTax the individual would never say that.

I’ll be on with Steve Dahl this afternoon to explain it.

Also, I’m sick of Rahm saying he owns stuff. Sweater Rahm said it and it was dumb then.

  3. Fair enough. Tensions are high. He’s in a big pickle. The relief this buys him isn’t that much really. Screamers gonna scream. He did. He softened it. Move on to the endless line of crises in front.

PS, If I were him, I might call Mrs. R and personally express some regret. I gotta hunch he may have.

  4. I don’t know. Having Mrs. Rauner vouch for Bruce in the election, saying “he has no social agenda”. She also kept her position with Ounce. I honestly don’t have any sympathy for her, nor I hate to say it, respect. She put herself in the crossfire. She also has a highly compensated chief of staff. No Mrs. Rauner IS a combatant in this and should be treated as such.

  5. Hb, she put herself out there for a cause that means a great deal to her. Dislike her all you want. Respect? Might want to reserve a little of that.

    Comment by A guy Tuesday, May 31, 16 @ 12:16 pm

  6. “Bruce has no social agenda”…

Says the president of an organization during a campaign and now her organization is suing that former candidate, now governor.

    That’s embarrassing for anyone.

If anything, I’m completely embarrassed for Diana Rauner.

With her ads, she aided in a person winning an election labs that governor now owes her group over $7 million in funds, while having… you guessed it… no social agenda.

  7. Some day they will laugh about this little =misunderstanding= as they vacation together.

  8. At least he owned it. The Gov ever own anything?

Comment by burbanite Tuesday, May 31, 16 @ 12:27 pm

  9. So the CEO of a major not-for-profit that is owed millions by the state is not involved with the decision to sue?

Of course she is “the decider.” (GOP-speak)

Rahm. Why walk it back? Next time, double-down bro. This is the age of Trumptactics and guess what? They are brutal but effective because the folks like everything to be in the public arena.

You spoke the truth. Let Rauner do the tiptoeing in his own house.

Yep, the cause of getting her husband elected governor.

You both spoke for me. I agree completely.

  13. Her organization is suing the gov so what he said is true. A surrogate of his who appeared in campaign commercials for him is president of an org suing him. And all at the same time she has state taxpayers shelling out six figures for her staff as first lady so she is a public figure in the administration.

I have zero problem with Rahm pointing out this insane situation. Zero.

  14. Rahm is more reflective than most of y’all.
    Wow. Live with that.

    Wow. Live with that.===

    I’m reflective…

    “Bruce has no social agenda”…

I’m reflecting on that quote and his that might embarrass a head of an organization that’s owed over $7 million and is suing the person that quote is suppose to reflect… positively… on.

    I’m reflecting.

Deflecting….but they sound so much alike.

  17. That word omelette is about as good as you’ll get from Rahm. He’s never been the best public speaker.

  18. Oh - A Guy -

    I’m looking back and wonderin’…

“If we think it’s fine that the head of our group does an Ad, even if it’s for the spouse of our leader and we could be owed millions of that spouse wins, is that embarrasing for all involved?”

You have trouble with words and meanings all the time - A Guy -, lol

  19. Reflecting on the fact he ran for public office.

Reflecting on the fact that she *starred* in his TV commercials.

Reflecting on the fact that he ran for office on *Quinn bad*.

Reflecting on the fact that he has no mandate for what he is doing to this state.

Reflecting on the fact that just because someone claims they are successful in business does not equate to any political knowledge or experience or how to build a coalition.

    Reflecting.

  20. Go to the Gov’s Twitter - his official one. The one that tweets daily about political agenda items. Who do you see most prominent on that page? The Gov is way off to the side. Diana is front and center - she is the focus of the banner picture (smiling admiringly to her husband). She doesn’t have to be front and center. But there she is.

It’s a difficult day when you find out that Rahm is more whimsical than you. I’ll give you the moment you need….

  22. Whimsical?

    In this instance?

“subject to erratic behavior or unpredictable change”

You do know words have meanings, right?

You don’t string a bunch together because they sound “neat” in one breath… lol

Many of us of are still waiting for him to say that he owns the CPS no-bid contract scandal and the hiring of a criminal as superintendent. . .

  26. “Bruce has no social agenda”…

If you think about this long enough, it starts to make sense. Really. I’ve come to understand that ‘no social agenda’ means … no social safety net, no workers comp, nada. I still have a few decoder rings available if anyone wants one.
