Hump day will also be session day

Posted in:

* Sun-Times

Democratic leaders on Monday for the first time spoke of scheduled sessions in June, as the budget deadline ticks loudly and Republican leaders appear unlikely to agree with Democrats on a budget bill. […]

[House Speaker Michael Madigan] announced the House would be in session every Wednesday through June. Cullerton also said the Senate would be “available” to work through June. […]

Durkin said the Democrats are stalling because they’re focused on the 2018 gubernatorial election.

“I think it’s pretty clear just in talking to people in the building and outside the building is that they don’t want to see Gov. Rauner get re-elected,” Durkin said. “So it’s just my impression — ‘they’ meaning organized labor and also the Democrats who run both chambers.”

Madigan said the Wednesday sessions would begin next week. So, no session tomorrow unless the governor calls a special session. No word on that option yet. Stay tuned.

Poor guy. I think the political whiplash the Superstars are giving him is a taking a toll.

  2. Trick’em Durkin. Drop all the TA demands and still see if the Dems sandbag the budget.

Nope, not it. Organized labor is focused like a laser on races that we can win. College town races. Social service town races. Labor town races. Nope, if we do our job in November, 2018 will not be as hard.

For Honeybears’ part it’s Dwight Kay, all day every day. Working hard, working smart, chipping away. Every day Trump, Rauner, and Kay!

  4. Pretty sure they will focus on the 2016 election first, but, if it helps you sleep at nite…

    Hmmm…what was your first clue?

  6. Lol. I guess Durkin isn’t aware that Rauner would lose even to Quinn at this point. Don’t worry Jim, keep whistling past the graveyard acting like we don’t have a general election this November. It’s like he has no idea that their intransigence is going to cost them this year too. Regardless, MJM is of course playing politics, but he’s doing it for this election. Why are you playing politics for Rauner? The TA is going to sink your party. Maybe someone should have tried it in a little less blue state first. Schools aren’t going to open this fall if and only if the gov decides his TA is more important. Oh they’ll say it’s about a balanced budget, but people like Jim Durkin won’t want to put votes on the coming tax increase, and even his boss the gov knows we can’t cut out way or off this. It’s math. Right now we’re still broke even only spending on mandatory non-discretionary items.

Does Durkin not know Rauner is not running for election for 2 more years? His comment makes no sense.

Maybe Durkin is in my building. From talking to the people here they definitely don’t want to see Rauner re-elected. /s

  18. ==Durkin said the Democrats are stalling because they’re focused on the 2018 gubernatorial election.==

2018? I guess Durkin and his party have given up on any significant gains this November and have moved on to the next election.

Comment by Wensicia Tuesday, May 31, 16 @ 4:15 pm

  19. ==Why doesn’t the Democratic majority just override the Governors veto of a budget bill?==

Rauner does not have enough votes to pass his budget. Madigan does not have enough votes to override and pass his budget.

This creates a stalemate until both sides accept that they require each other to do anything and must compromise with each other.

  20. I’d be thoroughly humiliated if I were Jim Durkin, but some people are into that I suppose.

Yup. Just as soon as the IL GOP agrees takes 50% of the political ownership of the needed new revenue, the budget can be settled in an instant.

  22. Riddle me thie Riddler…How did the Madigan/Cullerton “stall” creep into Durkie & SqueezeTheBeast and get their stop gap budget drafted as House Bills — takes 3 days.
