Rauner briefly meets with protesters

Posted in:

* Demonstrators raised quite a ruckus outside while Gov. Rauner spoke to a South Side church over the weekend. Afterward, Rauner met with a small handful of the protesters

Activist Lamon Reccord, 17, who moments earlier lead anti-Rauner chants and blasted a siren from a megaphone, was part of the group who met privately with Rauner and his wife.

The meeting lasted about 10 minutes. Rauner spoke briefly about the sitdown outside the church.

“What we’ve agreed we’re going to do is every week or so we’re going to meet with members of the community and leaders in the community and talk about the issues,” Rauner said. […]

“I brought to the governor’s attention the pain that this budget impasse is having on the black community,” [activist Eric Russell] said.

“And I told him how it appears he is balancing his budget on the backs of the poor and he basically said ‘I just got here and I’m trying to fix this mess.’ And we took exception to that because there is no level of compassion in regards to him balancing the budget,” Russell said.

  1. ‘I just got here and I’m trying to fix this mess.’

That argument doesn’t work anymore. You’ve been governin’ long enough. You’re creating you’re own mess.

  2. “I didn’t inherit any money, but I’ve worked hard. . . . Got a good education, done well. I’m proud of that. My grandparents were dairy farmers,”

That schtick never gets old. Did he drive down there in his trash can Van? Wearing his $10 watch? Does he drop his “g”s with this audience?

And by the way, who is that standing right next to him as he speaks to this audience?

  3. These are my thoughts, and still my thoughts from May 31st, and what the budget really means to Rauner and why those protesting just don’t matter to Bruce Rauner…

    ===- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, May 31, 16 @ 5:37 pm

===”…every Democrat in the General Assembly will own that credit downgrade.”===

Wasn’t it Rauner himself, and his campaign that blamed Quinn for ALL downgrades?

This fluidity of what Rauner and his Crew think works for them and works against them is very telling.

    It’s a Crew in denial.

Governors own. “Pat Quinn failed… “. Fine, the Denocrats will own this, then the Sandack Tweet should make Rauner sleep well…

… oh, that’s right, Durkin and Radogno, moments ago, made clear…

@RonSandack: I’m frustrated 2, but taking steps towards reforming IL more important than short term budget stalemate. - Ron Sandack, 9/28/15

    This is baloney now…

A short term budget is more important then long term reforms.

    Period.

    Hysterical.===

It’s not that a budget is needed, not needed, people hurt, don’t hurt, or even if the state is “ok”

Protesters need to realize… their well-being is the bug.

The feature is manipulating any situation to get to an acceptable Rauner end game.

The fact Democratic messaging can’t make the case this way is on them, not Rauner.

    Icing on the cake?

“Hang in there, protesters!” - Fake Todd Maisch.

That… that is the ball game. Sadly.

  4. Force the Legislature to override your veto. This will show the state the true face of this mess.

  5. –he basically said ‘I just got here and I’m trying to fix this mess.’–

No, you got here in January 2015. It’s now mid June, 2016.

Cleaning up the deliberate mess of FY 2016 and not creating another deliberate mess for FY 2017 would be swell.

  6. ==I just got here and I’m trying to fix this mess.==

I’ll bet he’ll be repeating this all the way ’til the 2018 elections. He still won’t own the damage he’s done to this state since he took office.

Comment by Wensicia Tuesday, Jun 14, 16 @ 12:19 pm

  7. Dr. Rauner was at her husband’s side, trying to increase his credibility in the community. She continues to make herself a public figure, and continues to support the Governor in his public role.

Any reasoned criticism she receives for that is entirely fair.

Comment by Keyrock Tuesday, Jun 14, 16 @ 12:21 pm

  8. Why didn’t the First Lady just reassure the protesters that she’s a Democrat and that Bruce doesn’t have a social agenda?

  9. ==Lamon Reccord==

Also known as =staring guy= during coverage of the BLM protests in Chicago. He was quoted often during the protests on Thanksgiving and last summer.

Comment by Formerly Known As... Tuesday, Jun 14, 16 @ 12:27 pm

  10. I’m sure the governor was mistaken or possibly misquoted. You can’t purposely create a crisis under the guise that “crisis creates leverage” and then be a victim of that same crisis.

  11. Oh, and there’s Mrs. Rauner, not being a civilian. Vouching by presence.

  12. “What we’ve agreed we’re going to do is every week or so we’re going to meet with members of the community and leaders in the community and talk about the issues,”

    2 questions:
    1. When is he going to find the time to meet with these people when his calender is full with his non-stop blame campaign?
    2. Why isn’t he in Springfield meeting with the legislative leaders on a weekly basis?

I guess now that school is out for the summer, 1.4% needs a new batch of captives to blather at.

  13. Old Blue has now seen it all. First a 17 yr old activist. Second, protesting outside a church. And you wonder were Rauner gets his credibility.

  14. All I’m going to say about the video is this…

Bruce Rauner is a Dartmouth and Harvard graduate.

I can’t think of a single technical reason Bruce Rauner can’t stand alone at a podium to speak.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Jun 14, 16 @ 1:17 pm

  15. OW, I know you have heard him speak.kinda makes ya question what an Ivy league education is worth.

    This explains my thoughts…

“As you know, l’m quite keen on comic books. Especially the ones about superheroes. I find the whole mythology surrounding superheroes fascinating. Take my favorite superhero, Bruce Rauner, common man. Not a great comic book. Not particularly well-drawn. But the mythology… The mythology is not only great, it’s unique.

Now, a staple of the superhero mythology is, there’s the superhero and there’s the alter ego. Batman is actually Bruce Wayne, Spider-Man is actually Peter Parker. When that character wakes up in the morning, he’s Peter Parker. He has to put on a costume to become Spider-Man. And it is in that characteristic Bruce Rauner, common man, stands alone.

Bruce Rauner, Ivy Leaguer didn’t become Bruce Rauner, Ivy Leaguer. Ivy Leaguer was always in that circle. When the Ivy Leaguer wakes up in the morning, he’s the Ivy Leaguer. His alter ego is Bruce Rauner, common man. His outfit with the Carhartt Coat that’s the phony security blanket he wraps himself in when the Rauner Crew introduced him. Those are his phony clothes, the flannel shirts the vests, costumes.

What Bruce Rauner, common man, wears - the Carhartt, the vest - that’s the costume. That’s the costume Ivy Leaguer wears to blend in with us. Bruce Rauner, common man is how the Ivy Leaguer views us. And what are the characteristics of Bruce Rauner, common man. He’s weak on using his ‘Gs’… he’s quick to make himself a simpleton… he’s a a rube.

Bruce Rauner, common man is Ivy Leaguer’s critique on the people of Illinois.”

That’s my take, - blue dog dem -

  19. The Gov. handled that well.

You don’t see sympathetic protesters seeking to drown out a church service. Only rude & unsympathetic ones.

Comment by Georg Sande Tuesday, Jun 14, 16 @ 2:03 pm

  20. OW, that was quite a comparison. I have too have an obsession. A sweettooth. Rumor has it from the governors kitchen staff that the RAUN Man has a pantry full of Oreos. That should tell the whole story.

They were sympathetic, just not sympathetic to the Governor’s message.

    Believe him.

That makes no sense. If anything it’s a choice, not a reason, and again, that’s not a technical reason, just an excuse.
