  1. It will be interesting to see how close the other Constitutional officers get to the Governor while on stage and at the various events. We’ve seen how successful “sharing the stage” with the gov was for Topinka, now we will get to see how LM, JW, DH handle it.

You know after the last cycle, that there will be cameras following every minute of every event. I think we’ll see the creation of a new dance in Springfield; the Blago Two-step (staying at least two steps away and trying real hard to stay out of the same “frame”).

Now repeat after me: “You’re a great guy governor and we love you.”…

  2. If I wanted to listen to a bunch of hot air soon-to- be ‘broken’ promises waiting to happen, I’d rather hear them come from the lips of Ms. Nix.

I’ll wait for the condensed version on the news tonight.

  3. He will speak about outsorcing (leasing) different parts of State Government, Lottery, Tollway, State Info Technology functions (there is an RFP from OMB that is out), basicly leaving today’s problems to the future of Illinois.

  4. “I have never been a quitter. To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body. But as [Governor], I must put the interest of [Illinois] first. [Illinois] needs a full-time [Governor] and a full-time [Legislature], particularly at this time with [the] problems we face ***

“To continue to fight through the months ahead for my personal vindication would almost totally absorb the time and attention of both the [Governor] and the [Legislature] in a period when our entire focus should be on the great issues of peace abroad and prosperity without inflation at home.

“Therefore, I shall resign the [Governorship] effective at noon tomorrow. [Lieutenant Governor Quinn] will be sworn in as [Governor] at that hour in this office.”

  7. Word is that under Nix the Governor will be assuming a much less confrontational tone. He’s got an opportunity to chart a new course today — to pledge to work with lawmakers on their priorities as well as his own, and to be open to ideas that don’t necessarily come from his polling or his campaign contributors.

    We shall see soon enough.

  8. Will he also reach out to Greens and offer to eliminate the so-called “spoiler effect” by using a series of runoff elections or instant runoff voting? I’m willing to bet he won’t.

  9. Didn’t Otto Kerner go to prison in his second term ?

  11. Same old blame-gaming from the first term, same effusive promises without a plan to pay. I thought this was the time of year for new programming, not re-runs?

  12. I’m curious about this “healthcare for everyone in Illinois” business.

  13. Someone please forward Phelps’ rendition of the National Anthem to the Daily Show.

    Please.

  14. As usual, he sounded great. It’s going to be a fun 4 years.

Tom and Frank didn’t look very happy. Especially after the opening partisan crack by Davlin.

Dude blew the pledge though. I felt sorry for the guy, he was nervous.

  15. Just watched Blago’s speech. Boring, boring and more boring. Who was that creepy Fabio wanabee in the audience ? Tribune, SunTimes and all the other papers are not cutting this guy any slack. They report more of what he didn’t say this time around. No talk of Ethics or Corruption. Daa.

  17. Will this be something like, IF you can find a doctor who will accept whatever the heck the healthcare plan is? It’ll be like an HMO, or something?

Actually, that might not be the worst idea, come to think of it. An HMO-style option unless people choose to opt out and just carry their own private insurance. Hmm…

Gotta think about that one, but whatever is being done, how the heck are we going to pay for it??

Comment by Angie Monday, Jan 8, 07 @ 4:42 pm

  18. I thought it was a good speech, but he mentioned health care and taxes too often. However, I was happy that he only brought up the $5 billion deficit once.

Dan Hynes ripped Rod a new one.

  19. Same old clap-trap - new this, new that, for the children, do more with less, fire state employees and make the ones who are left kowtow to their new Democrat supervisors who will only be seen by video conference from the Thompson Center. Governor also will only be seen in Southern Illinois via big video screens, a la “1984.” What a waste the government in this state is.

  20. Hey where is the love?
1st re-elect since the 60’s. Finally all the GOPs (as in MOPEs) are vaporized.
IL should be back on the fast track now!
    Time to Tango

  21. Hey Redd, I’m a little hazy from all the Kumbaya going around-remind me what happened to the last Dem gov who got re-elected.

  24. The Governor’s speech as as expected. The lack of timeliness and organization in the inauguration was comical. Phelps national anthem was disturbing.

I still can’t believe we were dumb enough to elect Alexi - democrat or not.

  26. Wake me in 4 years . . . I’m going to try to sleep through this nightmare. Thank God Uncle Emil can say NO to RB AND make it stick. Hope he has the guts to do it and be part of the solution.

  27. Where was the state anthem? Hasn’t that been played at every inaugural since, well, ever?
