Lousy idea, but a decent video

Posted in:

* Gubernatorial recall is a stupid, spitting-into-the-wind, utter waste of time idea. It’s practically impossible to accomplish with the constitutional amendment voters approved. I’ve even banned the word in comments (and it’s still banned, so don’t try to “debate” it today, either) because it’s usually only mentioned by ignorant, hyperpartisan, hyperbolic goofballs (and that goes for Quinn’s administration, too).

But the video isn’t bad for what appears to be an amateur production

Ouch.

  1. There are those who push recall… then…

There are those who have rational thought in their every day life.

I, personally, would work feverishly against recall. Elections have consequences, and the recall hurdles reinforce that thought.

    Rauner should not be recalled.

    Rauner should begin governing.

  2. We can be heroes

    Just for one day

    Comment by 47th Ward Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:00 am

  3. Agreed, ecall-ray is a non-starter. But Democrats ought to hire whoever did this video to help them with their messaging. Rauner is winning the soundbite fight.

Comment by South of Sherman Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:00 am

  4. It’s an effective video. I think people will believe newspaper headlines over politicians’ self-congratulations.

I think the anger and frustration levels are at all-time highs, not just with national government, but state government as well. Voters are desperate.

Unfortunately, accountability comes to politicians only every four years. And incumbents are awfully hard to get rid of.

Most pundits hate the idea of term limits, but they would stop a lot of the same-old, same-old problems we have now.

Comment by Streator Curmudgeon Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:06 am

  5. The video is devastatingly accurate. But citizens need to accept the consequences of their action (or inaction). Hopefully this current suffering will lead to better choices in the future. Friends of Madigan should fork over some $$$ to run a version of this video in key areas across the state.

Comment by NSideLady Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:06 am

  6. Excellent video. Even if recall were an option (which it shouldn’t be) that would just leave Slip ‘N Sue in charge. I don’t think that’s a workable solution.

    Comment by Cheryl44 Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:08 am

  7. Recall aside, it’s refreshing to finally see the kind of messaging Democrats desperately need. As mentioned above, the Ds need to hire whoever made this.

Comment by Yes Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:17 am

  8. I would support it if it were feasible. We don’t treat our constitution with any sanctity and we have endless discussion of stupid ideas like bankruptcy for Chicago like somevgroup in Chicago is doing again I I don’t see why every bite is sacred. Mine was stupid and I wish I had it back. I thought I was voting on workers comp not crazy

Comment by illinois manufacturer Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:17 am

  9. The fact that the video repeats “We are doing heroic things” similar to the monotonous repetition by Rauner is not lost on me.

    Priceless.

I don’t support recall, that part is a loser and, if deleated from the video it would make the effort to draw attention to what is actually happening that much stronger.

Lose the recall, keep the rest of the video.

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:19 am

  10. You obviously can’t successfully recall him, but a well funded grassroots effort to collect the petition signatures and pressure members of the General Assembly to sign the bi-partisan petition could wreak certainly wreak some political havoc.

Comment by ILPundit Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:23 am

  11. ===collect the petition signatures ===

Which would mean absolutely zero without a prior legislative vote authorizing it.

    Next!

Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:24 am

  12. Re edit the video and lose the recall stuff. It will make it more effective.

Comment by JS Mill Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:24 am

  13. it may be an effective video but no one will see it (1,500 views on youtube as of 11:20am). take recall out, edit it down to 60 seconds, improve the headlines (visual quality), and micro-target the headlines to be more geographically relevant then do big buy in each market.

Comment by go sox Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:24 am

  14. “We’re doing heroic things”

    “Bruce has no social agenda”

And yet, the state’s most vulnerable citizens are falling through the cracks often times in an irreversible fashion. Recall may not be feasible, but it would be just.

Comment by slow down Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:28 am

  15. The folks advocating the lousy idea that shall not be mentioned (or the Arnold Schwarzenegger that shouldn’t have been remade) made an excellent video, but they should focus their efforts elsewhere. Joining with a broad coalition impacted by all the failures they cite would be a very productive use of their time. Clearly they understand messaging, and the social service agencies and unions among many, many others could use their help.

Comment by AC Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:32 am

  16. Unless anyone can name the Raunerite members signing on…

    … please stop looking foolish.

Recall wing happen. It shouldn’t happen too.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:32 am

  17. go sox- I agree…

Comment by Love Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:34 am

  18. Oswego Willy is right. Elections have consequences. Illinois voted for Gov. Rauner and now we have to deal with him.

That being said, I do think this is an excellent basis for ads that should start running in about a year. It is tough to believe that whoever gets the Dem nomination will produce a negative ad as good as this one.

Comment by Gooner Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:38 am

  19. Instead of pettion sigs I would suggest vote collection for this fall. That will also send a message.

Comment by illinois manufacturer Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:39 am

  20. @illinoismanufacturer — That’s basically right, you use the petition campaign essentially as a voter identification and mobilization base, and use earned media as a new way to ramp up public pressure.

Comment by ILPundit Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:45 am

  21. I wish there were a “Like” button on this list program.

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:51 am

  22. In Gov. Rauner’s own words, “the budget is leverage”. That does not sound so bad until you put a human face on the budget. Why hasn’t the press been doing this? Where are the daily headlines reading “day 320 Illinois being held hostage” and then putting a face on it from those most vulnerable to providers, employees who are being required to pay for all medical care and wait form their insurance to pay etc. etc.

Comment by facts are stubborn things Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 11:53 am

  23. this video should go viral to everyone…with his my way or the highway antics…be the governor and govern instead of campaigning

Comment by pskila Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 12:00 pm

  24. Well, if we can’t persuade him and we can’t wecall him, he won’t be impeached other. He’s a Lame Duck so far so I guess we’ll have to just wait it out until 2018.
I suspect he’s waiting on the Impasse declaration, then after state employee pay gets cut he’ll declare victory.

    Get Your Helmets On!

  25. == …is a stupid, spitting-into-the-wind, utter waste of time idea. It’s practically impossible to accomplish….. I’ve even banned the word in comments ==

By that standard, the words/phrases: ‘governing’ and ‘balanced budget’ and ‘Grand Bargain’ need to be ‘banned’ as well. /s

  28. I help with the Wisconsin recalls. While we won some of the senate recalls, we lost the war. I agree that it would be a fool’s errand now in Illinois. Better to start working on 2018 NOW.

Comment by James Knell Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 12:39 pm

  29. “Rauner should begin governing.”

Everyone agrees that Rauner should begin governing, except Rauner.

OW, Any ideas on how to get Rauner to give up campaigning and start governing?

Comment by Mama Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 12:48 pm

  30. I agree with Go Sox.

(Which is difficult for a Cubs fan to say)

Comment by northsider (the original) Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 12:58 pm

  31. GREAT video. MInus the one line, it is a devastating and revealing hit on Rauner. More like this please! Governor R is getting way too much of a free pass from the public.

This is must-watch footage for Illinois voters.

Comment by Grand Avenue Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 1:01 pm

  32. ===OW, Any ideas on how to get Rauner to give up campaigning and start governing?===

    Nope.

Rauner is winning, the Dems are losing the messaging.

    Why start governing now.

Even Social Servine groups think “both” are to blame.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 1:07 pm

  33. “Dems are losing the messaging.”

OW, why are the Dems allowing that to happen?

Comment by Mama Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 1:18 pm

  34. “than”, not “then” near the end of the video. Also, slower headline transitions. Some people don’t read that quickly. Other than that, excellent work.

Comment by CharlieKratos Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 1:19 pm

  35. ===OW, why are the Dems allowing that to happen?===

Dems, Social Services and Labor are not seeking my counsel or paying me to ponder.

Their rationale, collectively, is theirs. I have no clue.

    Respectfully.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 1:21 pm

  36. I saw this on twitter yesterday and did a fist pump, more of this message please. Slow down the headlines - I read really fast and it was almost too fast for me.

Comment by Rayne Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 1:24 pm

  37. Outstanding message, just needs some tweaks.

Would love to hear ck’s comeback on this.

Damning, even if the closing hashtag is goofy.

Comment by Handle Bar Mustache Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 1:39 pm

  38. OW- I have always sought your counsel and always value it.

But to the post, Rauner will always have the bully pulpit, tribbies, resources to best us in the media messaging game. What you saw here with this video is the asymmetrical strategy that Rauner cannot stop or counter, social media. Within seconds I posted that video to my multiple media outlets. Already I’m sure my fellow black cats have already posted it everywhere. We’ll reach thousands of people in seconds. But much better than newspapers, which few read, or TV news, which few now watch, social media reaches much deeper. You see that the collective “We” are not responding. Correct, but not on their field of action. We respond on a much wider field of social media which we OWN!

Comment by Honeybear Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 1:44 pm

  39. - Mama -

I did mean that very respectfully, I guess I shoulda added…

… If they have a plan, then run with it because I know how I’d respond and they aren’t there yet.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 1:50 pm

  40. With all due respect Honey Bear, so what? Get this all over social media and then what?AFSCME won’t blow it next election? Is that the plan?

Comment by State worker Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 3:56 pm

  41. And its gone. Copyright claim. Too bad

Comment by Bruce (no not him) Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 4:40 pm

  42. ===Copyright claim===

Apparently, they used the BlueRoomStream video. They hate that over there. I can truly relate and I don’t blame them.

Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 4:44 pm

  43. - Honeybear -

You’ve been so very generous with your praise and compliments. Way more than I deserve.

I was making the point, going military for ya “above my pay grade”… not getting paid at all and not a leader in these decisions.

So, I can guess, sure, but my “logical” thinking keeps me scratching my head. My suggested paths here are not the followed pathways, and to that, it’s not my role to do that for them anyway.

Also, I do understand what you’re doing - Honeybear -, and I many ways it’s more critical to get that 2 in 5 to 1 in 5 or 1 in 6…

    But…

Denocratic messaging is so lacking and poor right now any signs of life would be a “good” suprise(?)

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Jun 22, 16 @ 6:21 pm

  44. Based on my interactions with other social services providers, I believe that we know who is to blame for the budget impasse. After almost 30 years as a provider for Illinois, I find myself leading groups through our first year long budget impasse. Assigning blame is not an issue for me. There’s only one thing vastly different this year than any of the others. But we have been threatened, cajoled, belittled, and demeaned by representatives of that one difference. In order to stay in the business of caring for our vulnerable citizens, we can’t bite the hand that feeds us, albeit very sparingly at this point. To do so will put us completely out of business. We are in a very tough spot. Hence the very public lawsuit with the very politically correct language. The only way forward that I see is through the courts.
